Curtail confidence, there remains a lot to do

211

I have no intention of encouraging anyone to place a bet, but if you think Celtic will be crowned champions in five weeks’ time, you can make a 40% return on your money.  Bookies do not give a 40% return on capital within five weeks often, so what’s going on?

The confidence you feel after Sunday is based on some cognitive biases.  We have bossed Newco for 2.5 out of 3 games this season and there is an expectation that this trend will continue.

Also, five of Newco’s remaining seven games are away from home, whereas we have only two away games left.  On average, more points are dropped away than at home, so there’s encouragement there too.

Add in your knowledge that the Celtic squad are getting fitter and better; Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are back, Cameron Carter-Vickers is playing, and we look as good as we have all season, and you can see the plan coming together.  So what gives with the bookies?

Bookies love trends.  They know two facts about them: punters back them to continue and they always end.  Lots happened on Sunday, but we should focus on the fact that at halftime, Newco ended a 2.5 game trend and started to cause Celtic problems.

Clement’s joy at a home draw was based on his belief that he – like you and me – knows what to expect from Celtic, and he will travel to Celtic Park with a plan he has confidence in.

Celtic are not the only side with players coming back from injury.  Sima will be fully fit the next time these teams meet; Yilmaz will return to the left back slot and Matondo will be asked to continue how he ended on Sunday.

This will allow Newco to play to their strengths as a counter-attacking side, as they did successfully away to Betis and Benfica.  If you can take a win and a draw from those games, you are entitled to be confident at Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers needs a plan, for that plan.  He will be preparing for it already, but you cannot just decide how a game will progress; chance, form and (of course) rogue decisions can derail the best of us.  We have a lot to do to win that game.

This leaves us looking at the away fixtures.  Celtic will visit Kilmarnock, where we have lost twice this season, compounded by a home draw.  Difficult though this game will be, I expect a win.  We are also likely to go to Paisley, scene of two comfortable wins this season.

Newco lost at Celtic Park in December, drew at Pittodrie a month earlier and lost the opening game of the season at Kilmarnock.  As well as their best European performances being away from home, they have a better domestic record away than at home.

These sentiments are why the bookies don’t particularly fancy our chances.  There remains a lot to do.

  1. the problem here is the SFA – They have known the dens pitch has been volatile and risky – BUT they provided zero contingency in the event of another postponement. We have known the condition of the pitch, we see the weather forecast – therefore risk of the game canceled should have been anticipated in advance – tannadice the obvious contingency .

Secondly , what support (other than celtic ) was provided to Dundee to help them as an association club? help them, get the games running and fine them after season ends.

This stinks of helping them – cancelled on the back of tiring games in Europe and exertions from ibrox .

Our league is run by incompetent, secretive, biased establishment mason lovers – Celtic needs to lead shake up!

  3. Still not an easy week for them.As much travelling and disruption to their routine as we could have hope for.

I hope the slagging of Dundee by entitled f.c. backfires by making Dundee determined to wreak serious revenge on them next Wednesday

This is a league matter nothing to do with the SFA, this time the incompetent officials are the ones at the league!

Exactly! Whatever suits them is fine.

They could have just gone ahead with it the Wednesday before they played us. They decided not to. Not sure why this is all Dundee’s fault all of a sudden.

Well, I am and believe they’re pushing for a neutral ground or somewhere where they can have their rabid fans there in larger numbers.

    So transparent. Silly Billies! 😂

  7. Huns, also not setting a pleasant tone for the playing of the match.Sure the Dundee players will be itching to be a little “Robust”, but in a very different way to their complaint.

  9. The latest postponement.

It’s in their heads, big time and nice to get the inevitable statement out of them.

Remember 2008 with their fixture congestion….. different reason but similar in principle regarding their fantastic ability for anger.

Hope this season goes the same way for them.

“If Dundee lose to Aberdeen, they will drop out of top six, irrespective of the result at Motherwell v Hibs.”

    ————————-

I believe I indicated that when I stated that a draw would put them behind Hibs.

But the short way to say it is, we need Dundee to lose against Dons to keep them interested in the re-arranged Hunnies game.

” I also joked about hoping they use a different camera or at least go downwards first!!”

    ————————-

The problem I had was that the realisation did not hit me until the tube was halfway down my throat. By which time, any complaint uttered on my part would have been as unintelligible as a Sevco statement.

  12. Astonishing arrogance in condemnation of a fellow club who really could do little more since the last postponement due to sustained freak weather conditions. This condemnation and taking of ‘high moral ground’ coming from a club who claim to be the same club which :

    1) Allowed their own stadium to reach such a level of disrepair that on 3 occasions had accidents leading to multiple loss of life.

    2) Broke the rules regarding EBT for a 10 year period whilst also continuing to live out with their means.

    3) Wrote off massive tax debts at taxpayers expense.

    4) Didn’t even pay the ‘face painter’ and assorted other local business folks.

Of course there are many more but I have to say I would hate our club to display such arrogance towards others even though we dont have a fraction of the ‘previous’ that lot have.

Very clear that the VAR circus has to stop now,not fit for purpose, rushed in ahead of schedule to help the huns, what happened at Tynecastle Celtic? Do share…..

  14. SFTB

5th place overall is not beyond Dundee.

After this scenario Dundee, even if they are already in top 6 might just fancy having a real go.

Likewise Dundee had 3 likely starters out for tonight. Including the Liverpool lad. Not sure but maybe 1 or 2 might make it for next week.

Dingwall Sunday to Dens Wednesday to Hampden Sunday is a tricky 3 ties for them to negotiate prior to playing us again probably.

  15. Prestonpans bhoys on

Looking at that statement are the huns trying to void the game with a 3:0 score handed to them. Moreover Dundee may have nothing to play for next week depending on results. Well irrespective of results they have something to play for now……

  16. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

On Saturday we want Aberdeen to win, Hibs to win., St Johnston to win (and maybe Celtic😂).

An Aberdeen/Hibs win incentives Dundee if they want top 6; a St Johnston win incentives Ross County lest they fall 7 points behind.

  17. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

p.s. just annoyed no one can catch Hearts.

They can lie down to the huns, have nothing to lose against us and even if they drop 6 points they’ll still finish third.

Good work yet again! VAR in Scotland is an unmitigated disaster. Well done Aberdeen FC for making this clear.

And you are right to mention Tynecastle, seems to have been forgotten, only sanction was on Brendan.

I’m sure there was a game ordered to be replayed in Belgium recently, think VAR was involved in that.

Celtic have raised the issue of decisions made at Ayebrokes, but nowhere near the level of the Dons, so not building up any hopes on that front though.

hello billy your through to clyde,

listen i am a rangers supporter and i go to the games with my boy mason, the solution is simple the game must go ahead at ibrox as a punishment to dundee, and a reward to the rangers supporters for having to travel up there twice without the game going ahead ……………..
