Dedryck strolls past England

1089

Hot on the heels of a former Celtic player becoming the most expensive defender in transfer history, we watched Dedryck Boyata stroll through Belgium’s win against England last night.  I would be more animated on this subject if he was secured on a five year contract, but as he his current deal only has one year to go, such a high profile performance could reduce our options for the player.

How many of you thought we would be in this situation after the Ibrox game in March?  That day Brendan Rodgers said there was better to come from Dedryck.  He is still not the finished article, but he’s a key cog in a team who fancy their chances in Russia.

Stiliyan Petrov match worn Champions League shirt raffle

We have a very special raffle, which ends this afternoon! The shirt Stiliyan Petrov wore in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich during our 2003 Champions League campaign is available. You can buy a ticket for £1 here on ebay.  Stan signed the shirt.

All proceeds go to the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation to aid research into leukaemia and cancer treatments.  Stiliyan’s recover from leukaemia shows us just how far treatments have come, but as our own CQN community knows too well, more progress is needed.  The draw will be made at Woodside Hotel, Aberdour, where the 14th annual CQN Open Golf Day is now underway.

Hope to see you later.

I am absolutely opposed to this type of ban around Celtic Park. And have made that clear to GCC. In fact would support a congestion charge before this type of restriction. Glad Celtic got involved, and appreciated Big Pete’s recently issued statement. Wasn’t joking about the Emirates site, put the space to good use until someone finds a better idea. Wasn’t at Broonie’s testimonial, what did we do with ol’ Gazebo, were DBBI and BSR involved?

Aye! They said the same about Efe…and they are eyeing up constable Lustig now.

Celtic are guaranteed to bank close to £800,000 from the World Cup after Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig reached the last-16.

An agreement between FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA) sees a pool of $209m (£156m) put aside to compensate teams for their stars’ absence, with each player earning $8,530 (£6,380) per day for their respective clubs.

That comes into effect a fortnight prior to the start of the competition, meaning Boyata (Belgium), Lustig (Sweden), Tom Rogic (Australia) and Cristian Gamboa (Costa Rica) had already secured around £715,000 for the Hoops by the end of the group phase.

However, the Bhoys will continue to earn courtesy of Boyata and Lustig’s success. The defensive duo will now be involved in the Russian showpiece for another five days – at a minimum – which will see another £63,000 added to Celtic ’s coffers.

  23. Revisionist assessments of players’ value & worth are fraught.

Some fans thought Dedryck had a decent season for us..

Some thought he was still Tebilly/Efe in disguise..

Some thought he was lucky to make the Belgian sqaud..

Some thought he’d be found out if he was selected..

I don’t recall anyone saying that Dedryck would have a great World Cup, that he would play 90 minutes in all 3 group games and that Belgium would win all of their games – including against England.

Strangely, the three Celtic players over which Celtic fans had expressed some concern all had/are having good World Cups. The others being the two right backs – Cristian Gamboa was an ever present & played well by all acounts, while PC Lustig played like he was 10 years younger. One can’t get in the Celtic side & the other had been dismissed as getting past it for much of the past season.

Dedryck is the same guy he was at the end of our last game, last season.

But, I don’t remember anyone saying at the end of the season that we should get Dedryck signed up on a long term, 4 year deal – before the World Cup – the way they were saying about Tom Rogic.

I’m delighted for the player that he’s had a great WC so far & I hope that it continues for him – all the way.

But he is still a Celtic player and his profile & value will have increased with all this exposure of his composed play. We may receive an offer or multiple offers for him, especially from the EPL, and we may be tempted to accept one – but our club’s recruitment policy will have been shown to work once again. A player we had signed becomes the focus of transfer speculation because of his onfield performances in the highest profile football competition.

Market value is based on demand, worth to seller, buyers perceived need and length of existing contract.

The crucial element though, as we have found out with many of players – from Kenny Dalglish to Stuart Armstrong – is the wishes of the player.

I don’t know what Dedryck wants or how happy he is in Scotland, but if he leaves we will get more money for him now than if he had been sold in May.

For many foreign players a Celtic, one downside is often that your international manager rates the Scottish game so poorly that regardless of what you achieve with Celtic, you are not thought to be a genuinely capable of playing for your country. I remember an Australian national coach dismissing Tom Rogic’s international credentials because he played in Scotland, and Virgil’s appearances being restricted solely to squad membership for the same reason. That view seems to have changed/be changing.

Celtic have matured in their management of player assets over the last few years – in my opinion.

This hasn’t happened by accident and I’m certain that a tremendous amount of work goes on behind the scenes to arrive at optimum conclusions that appear on the back pages.

I see there is tabloid chatter that Jozo is the subject of transfer interest from Lille – so who knows what’s really happening behind the scenes.

    WeeBobbyCollins

I think Lewis Morgan looks the business. Great shot with either foot, great movement & touch and very energetic.

I suspect that when Stuart Armstrong signed his contract extension last year with the promise that he would be allowed to leave this summer, Celtic were already working on getting in his replacement.

Signing & loaning back Lewis Morgan in January was the remaining peice in that sequence.

    Welcome Lewis!

    Stuart who??

its true Im in the states. And my life is 10 times better than the one I left. I doubt anyone within a hundred miles knows what a fenian bassa is or wishes me harm due to my religion.

Perhaps i have came across as rude in my observations so I do apologise . Thats not my intention. Honestly.

When I ponder Scotland It just confuses me. I seen the latest figures and ask myself why anyone would chose that ? I ask why not up sticks and leave for a better life ala TET.

During the last quarter century or so I have witnessed my native Belfast change a lot for the better but yet during that time it seems to me Scotland has gone backwards. Just now we are witnessing the corruption in football,,,which is a symptom of the underlying sectarianism within the country.

I find myself continually asking when is enough enough and why do people not speak out about this. Then you see the mob rule we are the people mentality which is backed by the majority and by their inaction those governing Scotland and I ask why stay ? Hope maybe you understand my position a little clearer.

Beatbhoy,,I did think it was the Argie game today not tomorrow ill admit.

As for the moment of the world cup , he scored a good goal. Thats it. The most naturally talented player of this generation scored a good goal. Big deal. Moment soo far,,,It might be yours but I expect him to score a good goal or 2. I expect this tournament to finally end the hes the greatest ever debate. If he doesnt deliver a single piece of international silverware hes not even in the conversation as far as I am concerned.
