Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

    I did go to uni:)

  2. I think we’ll get roughly £7-8m for Ki, so can we please go out and buy two experienced good, bad bassas, one for CB and the other for the CF position?

I think it is safe to say that having tried within this present 5 year plan to corner and dominate the; Japanese, Polish, Australian and South Korean football markets. I find it highly innovative that we are now targeting the Welsh market. Being a feeder club to a non English EPL club … it is the way for Celtic to go.

  7. Ki Sung-Yueng is heading for the exit at Celtic after assistant boss Johan Mjallby admitted the midfielder is keen to leave the club.

The South Korean, who was signed in January 2010 from FC Seoul, was subject to a reported £5m bid from English Premier League side Swansea City at the weekend.

Speaking on Monday as the squad prepared to fly to Sweden for their Champions League play-off round match with Helsingborgs IF, Mjallby said talks were ongoing with the Welsh side, but other bids had also been received.

“Ki is not travelling,” Mjallby said. “He is keen to move on and the club is in discussion with another club so we have to wait and see what happens. I can’t say who the clubs is.

“There have been a few clubs interested in him but I know for sure there has been one bid for him and I think maybe one or two other bids.

“He is a quality player but on the other hand he is keen to move on so the club needs to do something.

“He was away at the Olympics for a period of time but we will be sorry to see him go.”

  8. Greenjedi. If we seek Ki for 8 million Neil will not get 8m

  10. Neil Lennon has said that it’s very unlikely that any players will be brought in unless we get passed Helsingborgs and that if we don’t reach the group stages of the CL then we may need to sell a player. I wouldn’t get my hopes up that we’ll be bringing in any CH or CF anytime soon.

Watching Celtic in the Next Gen series last season, Tony Watt certainly had a tendency to go it alone. Dylan McGeouch gave him a right mouthful after one such foray.

But I agree. It’s no bad thing at all for a striker on the whole. The chance he had before the goal on Saturday was a case in point. Of course he should have tried to set Samaras up for the tap in, but if he had the maturity, vision and poise to realise that at this stage, he’d be the one that EPL clubs were in a bidding war for.

    All in good time.

We are selling a player – Ki.

That and a good result tomorrow night (and built on next week) means we can afford the 2 bad bassas and their wages. I don’t care if they cost £4m each or £400k each, its their ability and experience that I want in the team, not their price tags.

Greed is bad in a Striker!

  16. The continual snipes from Green about the ‘Sell out Saturday’ are pretty cheap and pathetic. The fact that they had more fans in attendance than the other games in Scotland combined proves nothing as this would normally be the case when they are at home anyway.

The important figure is that Celtic and The Rangers aside, the attendance figures are up 20% from last year.

  17. Does anyone know if the game on STV is available via a SKY satelite box? And if so what the channel number is please?

    Thanks!

  18. Dobbo,hope this helps

    1) Press “Services” on your Sky Remote and a list of 8 or 9 selections will appear.

    7) Move your curser to highlight “Find Channels” at the bottom of the menu and press “Select”.

    8) You will now see a list of available channels including STV. Simply highlight STV and press the yellow button. A tick will now appear next to STV. Press “Select” again to store STV.

    9) Press “Back Up” several times to come out of all the menus until you get your Sky picture again.

    10) Whenever you wish to watch STV in the future simply press “Services” on your remote control which will bring up the menu. Press “9” or scroll down to highlight selection 9 which is “Other Channels” and you will then be able to highlight STV and press “Select” to watch.

  20. I think that if we sell KI, and get into the CL group stages we will have the funds to add a Defender and a Striker if the right one is available.

As P67 states, this may depend on our finances from last season but I am not as psssimistic as P67 in that regard… or record losses were huge!!

  22. Recently (as is always the case during the close season) we’ve had the old season ticket “Premiership prices – SPL quality” comments. And to an extent that’s fair enough there are plenty of EPL clubs where the price of a season ticket is in a similar bracket to ours.

We all know that the TV money is what makes the difference between the players we get to see for our hard earned and the players that eg a Newcastle United fan gets to see for a similar outlay. However I thought I’d put it quickly into context of what their ticket would cost if the Newcastle tv revenue was the same as ours (rough figures).

I picked NU because their ST prices are quite close to ours £363-707 and the average attendance is reasonable close 50k.

However tv revenue is £47M compared to our £2M. So £45M difference divided by 50k supporters. That’s a nice round £900 difference.

Pretty stark isn’t it. Want a Newcastle United quality team in a Celtic shirt add £1k onto your season ticket price (I’ve rounded up due to the ‘good player in rubbish league’ premium we need to add to wages).

    I agree.

What the Celtic faithful has to finally understand is that players of the calibre of Blackmann, Ibrahim, Wilson, Bangura are more than good enough for our club our league and our support.

I just hope that we can sell Kayal, Wanyama and Mulgrew as well as Ki

If we sold them all we could get as much as 20 million quid.

How brilliant will that be ?

There really is not much point in dwelling on the Israeli and Kenyan football markets now that we cornered them within a matter of days.

We can tell our sevco pals that we got 20m in the bank and that they have got nothing in the bank. Isn´t that instant urine inducement that one.

“For the first time in over a century there will be no Annual General Meeting. There will be no chance for the 26,000 small shareholders from the Oldco days to grill the board.”
