Demonising liquidation carries risk

990

I didn’t hear the scores of other games this weekend until today when I read a red card protest (remember the day Celtic fans gave birth to this concept?) occurred at Ibrox to demonstrate disapproval to any potential new owner who plans to liquidate Rangers.

It would be preferable to everyone if Rangers paid their bills, restoring a degree of dignity, although apparently no one is offering to do this.  Publicly bidders for the club will all confirm their preference is to exit administration via a Creditors Voluntary Arrangement (CVA).  Offering pennies in the pound for a company is unquestionably a great deal, for the buyer, but whoever is nominated as preferred bidder this week is likely to have a serious option to liquidate the club.

Demonising the liquidation option carries risks for Rangers fans.  Short of raising considerably more money than they have thus far and paying their bills, there is little fan power can do right now.  If liquidation is the best option for creditors it will happen, better to accept the reality of the situation.  Whatever the resulting phoenix club is called, if the new owners inherit animosity from the start it will only diminish the potential of their new club.

Great post. He did advise me of your nights of indulging in Mood altering substances shall we call it over a few beers in Dublin’s fair city.

As you say, he was a great guy. The anniversary of his first death is not far away. I was truly gutted when he passed away. I think most CQNers that had the privilege of having met him, felt the same.

  15. Martin42 :- I read that post on Saturday and it brought a smile to my face, being honest I think you will be able to post it for the next few seaons as I don’t see any club being able to mount a competitive challenge.

I’d go as far to say that if Mr Lennon lives up to the promise he has shown and if he gets the board to back him in strengthening the team you could dominate for some time to come.

EDB :- It’s good to exchange pleasantries with you again and I hope all is going well with you and yours. You are one of the vast majority on here that I could disgree with without rancour.

Zbyszek :- As with EDB and Mr 42 you are another hom I’ve missed in my absence you always bring a refreshing view to the site, if your dream comes true and your team does meet Celtic in the C.L I’ll be using you as a reference to gain honorary Polish nationality for the games :-)

  24. By day I'm 'Mike in Toronto' but on Sunday 'I'm Neil Lennon' on

    Hello Gents

I dont post often, but have been a lurker, and infrequent poster, since the very early days, so I remember EU from his pre-EU days.

I dont think EU really needs me to defend him (he is obviously big enough and clever enough to do so all by himself), and I have never even conversed with him, but I find myself compelled to do so.

I say this as someone who is a trained Catholic theologian, and one who was born in Scotland, but associates more closely with Ireland, and finds it hard to distinguish my support for Celtic from those issues. As such, this issue is one with which I myself have struggled – that is, can there be decent supporters of Rangers, or does their very support of such a bigoted instituion automatically mark their card.

I have pondered this question as my brother’s best pal is a dyed in the wool R***s fan. However, as he is a good friend of my brothers, and is married to a nice Jewish lady, and having known him for 10 years or so, I have to conclude that he, himself, is not bigoted. In spite of same, I have always felt a bit uncomfortable around him, and have tried to determine why that is, and if it is something that I can justify or not.

Sadly, I am embarassed to admit that it is something that I cannot justify.

Ultimately, what it comes down to for me is that, while I struggle to understand why any right minded person would wish to be associated with a club so tied to bigotry, and I would argue that most R***s fans are bigoted (even if you ONLY sing THOSE songs at games, or because everyone else does… if you think it is right to sing those songs anywhere at any time, you are a bigot), it must be remembered that (i) R***s were not always so bigoted, and (ii) there is an element where they should be able to celebrate their (Protestant, British) traditions, just as Celtic celebrate their (Irish and Catholic) roots. the problem for most R**S fans is that they cant distinguish between being proud of their own history, and looking down on us and ours.

Just as being pro-Celtic (or even pro-Irish) for a Celtic fan does not necessarily mean being Anti-british, it is theoretically possible for a R***s fan to be pro his or her own heritage without necessarily being anti-Catholic or anti-Irish. The sad reality is that most R***s fans would not make the distinction (and, in my experience, most hold some racist views), but, having considered it further, I believe that it is not necessarily the case.

Further, it must be noted that, in its past, Celtic have not always acted perfectly as a club. Although I cannot say so definitively (really I have no evidence – it is more of a feeling) I dont think I am in alone in thinking that Jock Stein’s religion played a part in the club’s failure to offer him a seat on the board, when the time came. ( I know this point is quite contentious, but, this is the opinon I have come to hold… it may be wrong ) …. But, this doesn’t mean that the club, or even all the directors, were to be written off as bigots, or that Celtic (even if not perfect) should be compared to R***. How many bad acts does it take to make a club bad? Is it one really bad act, or is it the majority of the acts that define the club?

Clearly, when it comes to sectarianism, one club hired anyone regardless of religion, while the other didn’t. But, because they are more wrong (and they are much, much, more wrong), that doesn’t make us 100% right all of the time. However, you have to look at the totality of their history and ethos.

And, like a club, you have to look at the totality of the person (and not simply one act) when determining someone’s character. On that score, from the years of posting on here, EU seems like a genuinely good person, who, by all accounts, works to combat racism/sectarianism, and has spoken out on this forum against the bigots in his club (and, I suspect, elsewhere).

Some on here (and in my own mind, I am guilty of doing the same, sometimes) would condemn him for not doing enought, i.e., failing to publicly confront the bigots at R***s. Frankly, none of us know what EU has done, and, on this score, he would have to be frankly a bit crazy to go to IB*X and start calling them bigots. He wouldn’t make it out alive. And that is probably more than can reasonably be expected, and I dont think his failure to do so renders him a racist or a bad person.

As I said, I have struggled with this question. But, giving it some thought, I believe that people like EU or my brother’s friend are decent people who (usually, through no fault of their own, but rather by vagaries of the families into which they were born) were brought up as blue noses.

    So, my conclusions?

in light of the fact that I believe the vast most of R***S supporters hold bigoted views, I will continue on the assumption that they are bigots, unless and until I have seen some reason to believe otherwise. However, as much as it sort of goes against my gut feeling, my head says that it is POSSIBLE to be a R**s supporter and not a bigot. As such, when one of them (such as EU or my brother’s friend) shows himself over time to be a good and decent person (and not a bigot), then my initial mistrust must give way to the evidence.

In this case, to my mind, EU has over the years shown himself to be a fundamentally decent person who has an unfortunate character flaw :) of being a blue nose, but he is certainly no hun ( a bigoted R***S fan).

If EU is ever in Canada, and wants to watch a game, I would be pleased to do so in his company. I know that he is not too likely to take me up on my offer, so, perhaps I have to make the effort to watch a game with my brother and his pal.

Old prejudices (including my own) die hard, but, EU has the class and good grace to come on here and try to build bridges (because, given his comments, I do think there is an element of that in his doing so). I think for everyone’s sake (including my own), we should commend him for the initiative.

I recognize that, if Scotland is to improve as a society in dealing with itsbigotry, the vast majority of the movement must come from ‘the other side’, but ‘we’ must be prepared to see and recognize when someone from the other side reaches out and tries to make things better. They (someone like EU) might not always do it as vocally, or in the manner, that we would like. But, I have to ask myself, would I have the courage to do what others are demanding of EU? Probably not. If I were EU, would I continue to come back on here when he repeatedly gets grilled? Probably not. Can I really criticize someone if I wouldn’t do the same myself? Probably not. Could EU do more? Even though I dont know him, I have no doubt in saying yes. We all could do more to combat bigotry, or other ills. But none of us can do it all…. we (incuding blue noses – I am not sure about Huns – are just people, and not one is perfect.

As much as it pains me to say this about any R***s supporter, EU is a bigger man than I am – I might lurk on some of their sites, but that is only to revel in thier suffering. I wouldn’t join in like EU does. If EU is prepared to join in the conversation here, then I am a better person for it, and I for one welcome and thank him for his contribution to the discussion.

As I said, EU, if you are ever in Toronto, I would be pleased to buy you a beer and share your company for a game (preferably one in which the Bhoys pump your lot!).

Anyways, lads, just my thoughts. I will be back later to look in if anyone has any thoughts, etc.

    Cheers.
