Despite success, current European levels are not stable for Celtic

567

In 11 days we will know our potential opponents for the first and second Champions League qualification rounds.  While earning the money available for Champions League qualification is the overriding priority, we also need Uefa coefficient points.

Should they progress, Celtic will be seeded for each of the four qualifying rounds, but they are in position to be bottom of the seed: five points below second bottom PSV Eindhoven, and four above unseeded APOEL Nicosia.

Our place in fourth spot in future years depends on who else qualifies and how successfully we replenish our stock of coefficient points.  We earned eight points from our Champions League/Europa League endeavours last season, with a six point season due to drop off next year.

Eight points from one season is a baseline for teams who wish to be seeded in the champions route, but it is difficult to imagine even a modest improvement without a significant pick-up in performances.  Chances of us winning two or more games in the group stage feel no more likely than the chances of us winning none, or of finishing bottom of the group stage – equal to our seeding.

The dirty wee secret of European football progress should be acknowledged.  Teams from small nations find it nearly impossible to progress through the group stage every year, much like on the international stage when betting on the World Cup, but those who manage to get there more seasons than not, tend to have financially difficult season, where they fail to qualify for the Champions League, but earn a significant haul of points in the Europa League, making subsequent campaigns a little easier.

Despite the general invincibility of the team domestically, I suspect the current levels of achievement in Europe are not stable.  We will have to improve, or there will be a season of retrenchment.

In my Catholic primary 1 and 2, i before e except after c was drummed into us with the Catechism. I also blame the schools

    ————

Also a Catholic school, but we had an extra line.

    I before E except after C

    When the sound is E

You’ll find there are still exceptions to the rule, but much fewer ( or should that be less?)

  2. Auldheid: there has to be money in it for Celtic if they reduced the blackout zone for televised home matches. I would subscribe even though I try and get to as many home matches as I can (rarely more than 10). Many people throughout the British Isles who cannot attend Celtic Park would do likewise, I would have thought.

Of course, a fans’ Café beside the Superstore would also be welcome.

Is this the equivalent of a writtten warning to BR regarding his performance in Europe?

Show me the money — who are we up against and what is there T/O?

  4. Liverpool have released Jon Flanagan. He has had well documented personal issues and seems to have lost his way altogether. I thought we could have signed him and a couple of years ago but it looks dead now and i don’t know how Celtic supporters would react if we signed him. He is more likely to end up at the Huns now.

  5. Dearie me that door is classic Hun.

  9. The fitba on the tv or internet debate – I see the tv stuff now as actually more likely to increase attendance. Live games are like adverts.

Take GAA – used to be on free tv in Ireland north and south. Not all of it is now and I question the effect this may be having on interest levels. I used to go to GAA matches out of interest but since it became more difficult to access on TV I feel a bit disengaged from it. Attendance stats may not bear this out – yet – but I think over time people at getting as interested in rugby and football, not withstanding the cultural and community pull of the GAA here.

But for Celtic I genuinely think that making the games available on tv to more people is an opportunity to increase revenue. People want to be at the grounds they see on tv. It’s an experience.

Nothing to fear and everything to gain from more Celtic in TV/ Internet.

Ah the sun is shining and thoughts of lands far away call to the traveller to don my trusty boots, shoulder that forgotten back pack and head east once more to lands of mystery, intrigue and really cheap but phenomenally tasty street food (just don’t ask what it’s name was!)

And then I remember that I’ve paid for my season card and with Europe beckoning, a triple of trophy triplets teasing and coincidently the bank manager pointing out that the colour of my statement is not a tribute to the European Cup final ticket of 1967, I have decided that my next gallivant will not be till early 2019. Should we of course make the European later stages, that jaunt will begin with a leisurely meander through whichever cities we are destined to be paired with us, before I head off to the …ach never mind, there will be more later in the year.

So it’s Glasgow, Scotland, and whatever names are pulled from the euro hat for the immediate future.

    So Glasgow…….hmmmm?

There are throughout the world many great stone monuments and formations. Here’s one in Glasgow. But where was I when I took the pictures yesterday?

I’ve included a wee selection of the blue plaques that adorn the rocks, and when I get back later I’ll throw in a few more. But knowing the eagle eyed and photographic memories on here, you’ll probably have sorted it all out.

So where am I. I don’t want the area, I want the name of the location. (Leave your answers here or on the blog page itself)

Ironically, Big Chic our Corpus Christi headie’s name was an exception to the i before e except after c rule. I loved Mr Reilly, he was a kiddy on Jags fan, but really a leather belt (pun intended). A great man who gave me great advice and education on life.
