Developing an athlete

151

The life of a professional athlete varies enormously depending on what sport you participate in.  Swimmers and runners train every day in life, with the exception of rest days immediately before an event.  Footballers have rest days every week and for over a century rested for several weeks each summer.

Rest is an important part of any physical activity but I’ve never been convinced by the need for footballers to allow their fitness levels to drop so dramatically during the summer.  This is a different question from taking a break from injury-stressing contact activities – like playing football.  The summer weeks should provide a break from playing the game but presents a unique opportunity in the calendar to put intense work into other areas of fitness or physical development, without the need for travel or games.

As such, I’m glad Celtic are back at Lennoxtown, and that they have Champions League qualifiers in the middle of July.  Unlike the Barcelona players currently in Brazil with Spain, and who get one summer in four off, Celtic players have had the opportunity to rest any strains, and reinvigorate appetites ahead of the new campaign.

Have you registered for 1254125 yet?  Tom Conniffe has.  He is walking the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in five days, which measures in a tad over 125 miles, all for the campaign.  It is this simple to participate; find something you can do, register online and get goingYou can support Tom here.

Last call for tonight’s special Lions Roar event.  Watch the 1967 European Cup final on big screens in the Kerrydale Suite followed by a Q&A with the men who made history (including Willie Wallace, Heart of a Lion available below).  See you there.

  1. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

About 30 years ago I helped an old neighbour of mine move some furniture. (He was getting a new carpet fitted)

Anyway, next day he arrives at my door and thanks me once again for my help.

He gives me a number of Slazenger golf balls (wee size) still in the wrapping paper and a tube of 3 Dunlop 65’s, again still in their wrappers .

I never used them as they were the small size and still have them in mint condition.

Anyone any idea if they are worth anything?

    Thanks in advance.

Sometimes we all have to suffer for decades … hearing about ‘career-ending injuries’ which didn’t actually end a career.

  7. Quite honestly I don’t think tiredness should be mentioned from ANY Celtic player..neither should they be asked to play while carrying any sort of injury.

We should have a core of say 8-10 players that we need for the top games each season, so these guys should be kept fit & sharp but asked only to play at most 30-35 games.

With the strength of our squad we are well capable of giving others the remaining games and still winning. Last season our problems were in NOT utilising the squad often enough

and then asking tired / injured players for more effort. Then when having to call on the back-up find they were lacking in necessary sharpness.

  8. Guys, years ago I could go along with the ‘contact’ angle on football – but unless it’s Motherwell you are playing there is not so much of the contact these days and your certainly not flat out shuttle running for the 90.

Point stands that multiple, 5 set matches a week compared to 2 x 90 min football matches is a no contest as far as calls on your fitness and stamina are concerned.

I played a decent standard of football till about 40 and I very occasionally HID in a few games, canny dae that in tennis.

  10. Back in the 70’s ( we had moved on from ” no’ hedin’ the coke”…and dubbin on the boots by then)….

I managed a successful amateur team.

Due to extended runs in the Scottish and West of Scotland Cups….( never won either BTW)….we ended up with a huge back-log of league games to fulfill.

My guys ( nursing untreated injuries) played 3 games a week for 3 weeks…and complained if they were dropped or rested……

My heart bleeds for the modern footballer….Like feck.

But ALL OF THEM worked before turning up for the game.

It’s not as bad as it was.

  19. Now that it has been made official about our new strip next season I feel I gotta comment on it. Last years strip in my opinion was always gonna take a lot of beating , loved the narrow hoops , classy strip one of the best yet. Next seasons…………..I seriously think its horrible !! with the white lines breaking up the green when viewed from a distance as seen on the interview yesterday with a few players, It makes the green look paler , really dont like it , anybody else think same ?

If only the mibs offered us the same protection that Sevco get our casualty list would be much smaller. You can be as fit as a fiddle but without that protection. You are taking a risk with your career playing for Celtic. Scotlands reputation is poor enough but Celtic must be in the toilet.

But hey lets not talk about a board that obviously does not even care about its own players.

They reduce profits so much anyway and mostly come from a working class background. Also they are always getting injured and reducing their sell on price.

When did CQN become the infantile Sunday post ?
