If you are missing your competitive football fix you’ll have devoured the fixture list this morning but it’s still over seven weeks until the first league game of the season, when the league flag will fly before we face Ross County (we will have played a Champions League qualifier five weeks from today).
Thereafter, due to the postponement of a home game to allow for a financially lucrative friendly, Celtic are on the road six times in nine league fixtures, so if our away form is anything like it was for much of last season, it’s likely we will be in the mix, instead of clear leaders, come the end of October.
After an absence of some time, Celtic have a local derby to look forward to. They meet Partick Thistle at Firhill on 26th October with the return game at Celtic Park set for New Year’s Day. We are scheduled for two trips to the Capital within a month but don’t go booking your flights for the Hearts game in September, just in case…..
Curious news today that Celtic director and BT chief executive, Ian Livingston, will leave the telecoms company after five years at the top to become Minister for Trade and Investment in the coalition government. Livingston will serve from the House of Lords. How about boosting the ailing Scottish football industry by lobbying for a merger with a neighbouring league?
Have you bought a ticket for Firday night’s Lions Roar event? Join hundreds of Celtic fans and the Lisbon Lions to watch the Lisbon game and for a Q&A afterwards.

Kayal33
did you see pele?
Sligo rovers
always had a wee softspot for them. Ma wee uncle played for them back in the 50s
K33- aah,remember that one from 74 WC.HH
Zidane and Platini were up there.
from twitter…
Pavel Pogrebnyak to sign for Celtic £3 million to replace Hooper, deal nearly completed
It probably is an age thing.
I think Pele is the greatest player I’ve ever seen, just ahead of Jinky, but that Brazil team was packed with “greatest ever players”
bada
platini what a player he was also..
Last 4 winners at Kempton and Ripon have just paid for my daughters i-mac she needs when starting uni in August. 6/4,9/2,7/2 twice nice wee Yankee paid £911 .
Woo-Hoo :O)))

it also had the “white pele” in its ranks..
I love to draw the boot off Mark Lawrenson.
~SPF~
Zidane
when he was asked to name his top 11 players, lubo moravciks name appeared. That’ll do me
Pele , like so many great players of the past, suffers because so little film footage of what he could do exists.
There is more on film of Daryl Murphy and Chris Killen playing for Celtic than there is of Jimmy Mcgrory.
moravciks is the most skilful player I ever saw…not the best, but for me the most skillful
Channelislandcelt,
Well done nice one
If you fancy re investing I have heard that Green Door (first race Ascot tomorrow) is worth a bet at about 10/1
Alternatively put the lot on Inka Surprise in the last at Kempton tonight
Masty- Reading have Russian money,he will be far too rich for us IMO,but we live in hope.HH
Playing along side great players also helps, and Plantini played along side Jaun Tigana, a grossly underestimated player, As Masty says .in my opinion
HH
sonsoferin-noticed that about Hulk too but couldn’t have phrased it like you :)
EDB
Thoughts.
bada
I agree, only posted it as I seen whilst dredging through twitter
desparatetim..csc.
I can’t quite figure out how Ross County and ICT did so well last year. How do they do better than Hibs Aberdeen Hearts and Dundee ? They are minnows but they are run well. The rangers effect ? Trying to match a disgracefully run club – can it ruin you for years ?
jackie mac
the pitches at both their grounds are a disgrace and a great leveler
Euro 84
Giresse, Tigana, Platini & Fernandez
what a midfield
Any real news on possible signings ?
Think the club are resigned to loosing Hooper and trying to get some kinda auction going .
If the plan works I reckon we could get circa £10m.
That would be a massive result .
Think Lenny and the board are playing a blinder, Soutgampton, Hull, Reading. Just give each a little bit encouragement and swat them down . Only reluctantly given in at £10m!!!!
These English no mark clubs are mad mental with the cash and if that is the type of club Gary wants to go to , he’s not half the man I thought he was.
Hail Hail
Efan ekoku
Ekoku sounds like the noise i make when i cough up my lungs of a morning
Masty-HH.
Think Gerson was the white Brazilian. I’m probably wrong.
Again I’ll say it’s an age thing. From memory, failing, Brazil were purported to have a weak goalkeeper and defence but the forwards were beyond anything I’d previously seen.
I seem to recall Big Jock saying he’d happily take a 5-3 win for us than a 1-0. Think Brazil played in that way.
burghbhoy-anything over 5 mil for Hooper is great business IMO

If we get £6m for Hooper I’d be pleasantly surprised. And even then it would be dependant on add-ons.
On the great players debate, Maradonna best for me.
Single handedly won the World Cup and took Napoli to 2 Series A titles .
A club that win hee haw in about 50 years
Lawerson – a commentator on mogadon advertising SAGA holidays!
Masty,
Got to agree with Kayal and Lily on the Pele thing. Grew up watching him and Eusabio, and at the time I thought they were absolutely brilliant, but IMHO, Maradonna, Messi, and Christiano Ronaldo now leave them both standing, in every department of the game.
With hindsight, I think that Pele was undoubtedly the best player in the world, of his generation, but I have always had my doubts about his supposed scoring record.
Over 1,000 competitive goals? Come on, do the maths!
If his career had lasted 25 years, say, he would have had to have scored 40 goals EVERY SEASON!
Would still have liked to have seen him in the hoops though! But would he have got a game for The Lions?
As you say, it’s all about opinions.
HH & KTF!
EDB..
tostao was the white pele mate..
Uncle Tim the pseudo intellectual on. BBC at mo spouting his guff
Started the Willie Wallace book, greatly enjoying it
Gerson, Rivelino and Tostao were white 1970 Brazilians
bada ,
I think Brazil’s other strip is blue.
However, they seldom have to wear it, unless when they play Norwich.

Jim Mc.Guinness and Ian Bankief were at Croke Park today, to launch a Celtic Foundation – Gaa sports initiative, geared towards cross sports / cross communities.
Onecentre isto be based in Ballymote, Co. Sligo and another in the North.
Players can only really be judged in their own generation, over the duration of their career.
You just know that you are watching genius when you have witnessed the careers of Pele, Maradona and Messi.
To elevate one, is to denigrate the others….and I don’t think they deserve that.
bt
Tory peer on our board now? Please tell me we havnt sank to that level. Whats wrong G G or Tommy Sheridan?
greatest players of all time…
1. Pele …. no doubt. 700 games, 700 goals. Sure he didn’t play in Europe… but (i) before ronaldinho, Brazilian players didn’t really travel/excel abroad, and (ii) Pele was so good, his country declared him a national treasure, so that he could not leave the country to play. Hell, even my mum doesnt say I’m a national treasure! And he won how many leagues and world cups? Says it all for me. I agree his anti Argentina bias is a bit tiresome.
2. Maradona …. so many flaws (one footed) but still managed to excel …. but too many flaws (drugs, short career) to be the greatest of all time….
3. DiStefano…. pure class.
C Ronaldo could crack the top 10, but Messi could crack top 3 if, as some have said, he wins a WC or two.
Garrincha (the little bird) gave Jinky a run for his money!
Top player in the 1962 WC final (when Pele was missing).
