Don’t book travel to Edinburgh, lobby for league merger

807

If you are missing your competitive football fix you’ll have devoured the fixture list this morning but it’s still over seven weeks until the first league game of the season, when the league flag will fly before we face Ross County (we will have played a Champions League qualifier five weeks from today).

Thereafter, due to the postponement of a home game to allow for a financially lucrative friendly, Celtic are on the road six times in nine league fixtures, so if our away form is anything like it was for much of last season, it’s likely we will be in the mix, instead of clear leaders, come the end of October.

After an absence of some time, Celtic have a local derby to look forward to.  They meet Partick Thistle at Firhill on 26th October with the return game at Celtic Park set for New Year’s Day.  We are scheduled for two trips to the Capital within a month but don’t go booking your flights for the Hearts game in September, just in case…..

Curious news today that Celtic director and BT chief executive, Ian Livingston, will leave the telecoms company after five years at the top to become Minister for Trade and Investment in the coalition government.  Livingston will serve from the House of Lords.  How about boosting the ailing Scottish football industry by lobbying for a merger with a neighbouring league?

Have you bought a ticket for Firday night’s Lions Roar event?  Join hundreds of Celtic fans and the Lisbon Lions to watch the Lisbon game and for a Q&A afterwards.

All that modern players have at their disposal is better technology, not technique.

It’s true in football, golf and tennis.

In the flesh,Xavi ,Iniesta and Messi . An absolute pleasure to watch these play. Still have to pinch myself when thinking that we turned them over .

pele scored 95 goals in just over 100 games for brazil, his domestic goals I am not sure about, although I seem to remember something about romarios scoring record being adjusted shall we say, so I suppose the same could be true of pele’s.

Aldo de Negris fae Mexico was a guy we were in for a few years ago,is he injured?

  7. One of my biggest disappointments in football was watching the Brazil Team of 1974.

What in God’s name happened to them in 4 years ?

As an 8 year old in 1970 I couldn’t believe the show they put on in Mexico.

Even Scotland took a point off them in Germany and could have even won had it not been for that wee ginger guy from Stirling.

You know I think your the first person to have posed that question, re Pele scoring, I does look a bit dubious, and would he have gotten a game before Henrik Larsson?

Players can only really be judged in their own generation, over the duration of their career.

    >>>>>

I agree to a certain extent about players in certain generations but pele was in a league of his own.

Or get £0 if he stays but doesn’t sign new contract. Last year of a player’s contract and it becomes a buyers market, January was probably optimum transfer fee we would have got for him.

Played 50 times for Brazil – only once on a losing side!

He had spinal defects and one leg shorter than the other – played for 20 years +10 years in friendlies/ exhibition matches – Brazil never lost a game when he and Pele were on the pitch at the same time.

  24. Guys, I disagree about Hoops.

These mad mental cash rich English middle / low ranking teams will go to any lengths to get their man.

That’s why in an auction with the 3 quoted clubs we could get IMO £10m if we get it right.

If £4/£5m is the optimum fee , we should say to Gary, look mate, cards on the table, stay another year, help us get to the Champions League again and u can leave for nowt next summer.

The Champs league money would far outweigh the transfer fee lost.

  26. Evening all

Just in – reading stuff about best player.

Leaving aside Jinky and Danny McGrain whom I genuinely think were the best players I ever saw in their positions I try to leave our players as I saw out of discussions. I would say the best I saw in the flesh was Maradonna in 79 – years away from his peak but magnificent and certainly

superior to Cruyff ( better when he

was old when I saw him), Zidane or Baggio whom I did at or near their peaks. I saw Georgie Best in 1969 and aside from Pat Stanton he was the only person who could keep his feet on a foul night. Ronaldinho was terrific at CP in 2004 and the best defenders I saw in Paradise were Cafu and Maldini.

I never saw any of the great Brazilians or Beckenbauer in the flesh . Pele was fabulous but Gerson , Rivellinho, Falcao and the peerless Socrates were all great to watch .

Oh and Gunter Netzer at Wembley in 72. Almost as good as Murdoch!

    Jimbo

  27. Messi – great on TV but when I saw him – as Eric Morecambe would say ‘rubbish!’
