Duffy and need for central defender more than winger

476

A proposed swap deal with Blackburn with Shane Duffy coming to Glasgow and James Forrest heading south makes sense for Celtic. Late last season we were talking about how Erik Sviatchenko was our only solid central defender, with Jozo Simunovic injured and yet to establish himself.

Duffy made his Euro 16 debut in the 1-0 win over Italy, before being red carded for a professional foul against France. I’m not expecting a van Dijk, but his performances in both games was of the standard Celtic only have with Erik.

James Forrest grabbed the space vacated by Aiden McGeady’s move to CSKA Moscow and made the most of the opportunity but injury has inhibited him in recent years. He’s also suffered from being part of what looked like a World Record attempt of squeezing wingers into a 23-man squad. We need fewer wingers and at least one more central defender.

Brendan Rodgers comments that Kris Commons is nowhere near ready for the first team is not encouraging. I’d have him limp to the bench for the forthcoming qualifiers. Even unfit, he’s capable of linking play like no one else in the squad.

Stunning statistic from Clogher Celt through the night

65 players been signed in past 6 seasons, averages 11 per season – wow

Just think how much we could have saved by building a team, with changing 2 or 3 players max per season

Stability and a far better quality

What a complete disaster that guy Park has been for our club, in my opinion ????

This full area needs to change, once Brendan gets his chosen squad in place

I don’t normally comment on your posts but I DO think you are wrong about Scots and their current voting intentions. There has been a real groundswell since Brexit to vote for Independence. Every single person I have discussed it with, including those like myself who voted No at the Independence Referendum, now want to leave. We don’t want to be run by the little Englanders.

The implications of that financially for each and every one of us are, of course, formidable.

Why is DD allowing this to continue.

    I want James Forrest punted.

I would however play him ahead off Gary Mackay Steven.

GMS is even more timid in the tackle than Forrest.

He looks half decent in pre season friendlies, when the pace and competitive edge are out the game.

He is the most ineffective forward in our squad. No heart ,not guts,no winning mentality .

    A lacklustre loser.

If pushed I would keep Efe before GMS.

Nice lad,but nowhere near the standard of player that successful Celtic teams have enjoyed.

You know, if he was brilliant technically I’d be up for keeping him anyway and working on the other stuff. But I’m still waiting for someone to tell me one area of his game that is truly impressive. Passing is average, crossing below par, shooting/finishing average, pace ok, tackling weak, heading…

A lot of antipathy towards Park, but who’s giving him his instructions?

We’ve brought in a significant number of top players during his time, from Lenny’s first group that included Ledley, Matthews, Hooper and Forster to Virgil, Lustig and Wanyama, and latterly Denayer.

So he can find them if his instructions are clear.

What happened under Ronny though? We’ve had a roll call of the mediocre. Ronny seemed to collect players rather than coach them.

Saturday was a case in point. Our starting 11 featured just Sviatchenko and Armstrong who were signed by Ronny (Gordon is arguable), while our second string had 5 Ronny-signed players.

Others, such as Boyata, Simunovic, GMS were injured, but hardly missed, while Bitton, Johansen and Commons would likely feature ahead of some who got game time.

By all means criticise the outputs from the scouting department, but unless we know how responsibility is allocated, we can’t hold Park accountable on his own. He’s one part of a machine that has broken down recently.

WRT signings, I too am frustrated at lack of new faces but if we are all being realistic most players that we will be looking at won’t become available until other clubs really get into their pre-season – we are ahead of the schedule compared to other clubs of similar size. I’d actually be happier with a few more players being sold before we bought anyone. [I am not Peter Lawwell]

The only thing I would say, is that given that we are only just seeing some of the ‘big’ teams getting their priority targets sorted, it suggests that the transfer markets has been nominally closed until the Euros finished.

Now I’m aware that some (or all) of our targets may not have been involved but if people generally are in holiday mode, it can be difficult to get them to do business at the speed we require.

  23. Some people assuming that a lack of movement on Shane Duffy means he’s not interested. I read somewhere that the day after he arrived home from the Euros, Duffy and his family went off on a well-earned holiday.

Do you know what a £15 billion deficit would do to the working class in Scotland, if not plugged by the Barnett formula?

Do you know what withdrawing from our biggest market, the UK, would mean for the working class in Scotland?

Do you know what taking on and financing our share of UK debt of over £100 billion would mean for the working class in Scotland?

Do you know what setting-up a new currency and new central bank would mean to the working class in Scotland?

Do you know how long it would take to get into the EU and its impact on the working class in Scotland?

Do you know the ramifications of joining the Euro and what its impact would be on the working class in Scotland?

Do you know what the impact of a ‘hard border’ between Scotland and the rest of the UK would have on jobs in Scotland?

Do you know what trade tariffs on Scottish goods could have on the working class in Scotland?

Do you know what impact ‘Little Scotlanders’ would have on the economy of Scotland?

You don’t know any of the above because those (SNP) who would rip us out of the UK don’t know either – but they will still lie as they did in their ‘thick’ White Paper – Oil and Gas are a ‘dead duck’ – shipbuilding for MOD would cease and the Scottish financial sector would relocate south, where 95% of their customer base resides.

Leaving the EU is not my choice, however leaving the UK would spell disaster for the ordinary person in Scotland.

Your spurious point about the Orange Order and the likes – if you feel that they have too much power in Scotland whilst we are part of the UK – just imagine how that power would be increased and exercised in a smaller and more concentrated area, i.e. an independent Scotland with our ‘kind’ having only a 16% say in all things.

  25. Not sure why we have all this clamour regarding signing players for the Euro qualifiers.

We have more than enough talent to get us to the CL group stage already.

Our current wage bill is evidence of that and then some.

What we need is a plan, some confidence and some desire.

We have paid top dollar for a well respected coach with a good history.

Hopefully he is working to squad to put out a team that will perform as a unit beyond the capabilities of its constituent parts.

If not then we should have stuck with RD and wallowed in PL’s inadequacy.

The useless and clueless are now in plain sight.

Now is not the time to put out teams with failing players just to unlock the purse strings.

If that is required the BR is wasting his time and the Irish Raj is wasting his investment.

BR and the current squad need to focus on the short term.

DD’s efforts towards squad enhancement need to max out for the medium term.

PL needs to look at the long term and a new role.

The support have done their bit so it is all down to the squad and the club.

  28. Anyone else remember the Joe Ledley signing saga?

Joe’s Cardiff contract was due to expire on 30th June. Legally, he could talk to any club within 6 months of that date. It was rumoured that Celtic were interested.

About 2 weeks before 30 June, the media got hold of the fact that Ledley was at Celtic Park for a medical and signing talks. About 3, maybe 4 days later, Joe was filmed at Glasgow airport, on his way back home, and was asked by the assembled media if he was signing for Celtic. Joe said nothing of substance.

CQN was in meltdown. It seemed every second comment began with the words “I heard . . .”

    What they heard was . . .

    Couldn’t agree terms.

    Failed the medical.

    Lawwell wouldn’t pay the wages.

    Lawwell taking the piss.

    etc etc etc

For an entire week, it was open season on Peter Lawwell.

Several posters pissed against the wind by urging calm. I remember some of us, including Paul67, pointing out that nothing will be announced until after his contract runs out and he can sign a new contract for Celtic. In those days the board were adamant that they would never announce a new arrival until the contract has been signed.

Fast-forward to 1st July and there was Joe Ledley in a Celtic shirt, holding aloft a Celtic scarf inside Celtic Park, having duly signed, hours after his Cardiff contract had expired.

    Lesson learned?

    You’re joking aren’t you?

  29. Just on another note,

As much as I dislike some of the thing PL says and does,

All he has done with the last few managers is back them,

It was not in his cv to be an expert on players ability,

Park is different, knowing/ accessing a players ability is his remit.

All of your points have validity, the point that PARKHEADCUMSALFORD is making that Scotland voted to remain part of the UK,and then to remain part of the EU.

Both those decisions were the my preferred choice also.

The Scottish referendum was in many ways similar to the EU referendum. In that both sides lied through their teeth to the electorate.

But there was one point in particular which was made during the former which was correct then, and is correct now.

If Scotland achieves independence,it will not automatically be considered for EU membership.

    As,indeed,you point out.

It is on the basis that we WILL be automatically admitted that the SNP will fight a future referendum on “the game-changer” but there,as usual, they will be at the porkies.

Independence would,IMO,have been a shocking move for our country in 2014,with rUK in the EU,and us denied access. It will be a disaster with both of us out and fighting to a different agenda.

PARKHEADCUMSALFORD’s argument is that we voted to stay in on a premise that was false. Continued membership of the EU. But there is no chance either way of Scotland remaining in the EU once Article 50 is triggered.

    It’s a total disaster.

Have you ever heard of the bosman ruling? It’s changed football. Players tend to move about more so there are more ins and outs involved.

Also, Celtic now can have 7 subs available for every game. How many could Jock Stein call upon? Substitutions only started in Scotland in 66 and I believe you could only use one.
