Duffy and need for central defender more than winger

476

A proposed swap deal with Blackburn with Shane Duffy coming to Glasgow and James Forrest heading south makes sense for Celtic. Late last season we were talking about how Erik Sviatchenko was our only solid central defender, with Jozo Simunovic injured and yet to establish himself.

Duffy made his Euro 16 debut in the 1-0 win over Italy, before being red carded for a professional foul against France. I’m not expecting a van Dijk, but his performances in both games was of the standard Celtic only have with Erik.

James Forrest grabbed the space vacated by Aiden McGeady’s move to CSKA Moscow and made the most of the opportunity but injury has inhibited him in recent years. He’s also suffered from being part of what looked like a World Record attempt of squeezing wingers into a 23-man squad. We need fewer wingers and at least one more central defender.

Brendan Rodgers comments that Kris Commons is nowhere near ready for the first team is not encouraging. I’d have him limp to the bench for the forthcoming qualifiers. Even unfit, he’s capable of linking play like no one else in the squad.

Some people assuming that a lack of movement on Shane Duffy means he’s not interested. I read somewhere that the day after he arrived home from the Euros, Duffy and his family went off on a well-earned holiday.

No matter how hard you look, you’ll be hard-pushed to find any reports of EURO 2016 players being involved in transfer deals, Ibrahimivic excepted. They’re all on beaches.

I expect Duffy to be signed very soon.

    ==================

La Liga sides are in pre season training as of Monday – Euros or no Euros Barca and Man Utd for example have got a few deals done. Umtiti, Digne, Ibra, the winger from Dortmund, Bailly(?) from Villarreal.

I’d expect us to have a couple in for the next round, subject to qualification etc

But its true that its not a stretch to say that its hard to fault the club for believing we have more than enough to progress past this qualifying round, despite the wake up call last week…

Open to correction. I believe that John Clark was Celtic’s first ever sub.

  3. It sort of makes me laugh but mostly just makes me sad when I see a rerun of the same old familiar excuses trotted out by those on this site.

Celtic have no intention of soending much money. They are operating a moneyball strategy and BR will have to play ball with that. It’s a failed pathetic strategy but the Celtic support (en masse it seems ) where suckered into believing the strategy had changed with the arrival of BR.

    We are fools.

An of course we now hear that it’s too hard, players and agents are on holiday, we must wait for BR to have a look at the squad.

    Blah de blah blah.

Same old crap excuses. Same result.

Law well and DD will be laughing at our stupidity. They get their diva and massive bonuses while Celtic burn.

My god the Huns have strengthened more than we have and they managed to utterly humiliate us last season.

So more ritual humiliation this season then, it’s already started with the utterly shameful defeat to the imps.

Meanwhile of course the farcical wrestling like Scottish football shambles on, pretending nothing happened and ready to inflict racism upon us. Our board say and do nothing and have now it seems screwed res12.

Perhaps our more than a club mantle can be compared to refusing to pay the living wage and now offering zero hours contracts? Doesn’t that make you all proud?

That we haven’t really strengthened ahead of the cl qualififiers AGAIN says it all. A massive increase in season book sales as we all return to old firm mode isn’t enough for law well and co.

He must be licking his lips at his next big bonus eh?

    What fools we are.

  4. I see the North Brit Unionists are cacking it again at the sheer inevitability of a second indy ref in 2017, because they know what the result will be. Hilarious.

  5. M @ 10.06

PL is to blame for our current problems.

The only area where he has succeeded is the efforts he has put in to secure his bonus.

He has put in place terrible managers.

He has turned the club into a selling club to fund the Cashflow that supports his bonus.

He has allowed the purchase of a whole series of agent friendly diddies to fill our squad with non performing strikers at a huge cost to us — both to buy and then to get rid of.

We are paying big money to watch the team.

And we have been rewarded by 8 years of decline and stagnation interrupted by 2 CL campaigns.

I have always assumed that the double `d` in ` Scoddish` was simply to reflect the way some people pronounce it. Possibly those of a Hunnish persuasion as it I believe it is usually used in a derogatory fashion on CQN.

“PL is to blame for our current problems.”

Not solely. You can’t blame all Celtic’s problems on the boogy man.

“He has put in place terrible managers.”

PL does not appoint the managers. He gives recommendations to the board but they are the ones who make the decision. Ultimately, it’s been DD’s decision since he appointed MON.

Ronny wasn’t great but to be fair, he wasn’t brought in to be first team coach originally. Neil Lennon left the club in the lurch because he thought he could get better money down south.

Don’t believe the “lack of ambition” tripe Lennon put out at the time. He was desperate to be Celtic coach this year. Why? Because his career prospects have dwindled and he’s ended up at Hibs.

“He has turned the club into a selling club to fund the Cashflow that supports his bonus.”

To a certain extent, all clubs are selling clubs. The bosman ruling has ensured that players hold the cards and they can run their contracts down.

“He has allowed the purchase of a whole series of agent friendly diddies to fill our squad with non performing strikers at a huge cost to us — both to buy and then to get rid of.”

The reality of money in football is that China, USA, India, and other massive population centres will eventually leave the EPL with dross players in the future. When Asia and even England turns to the Chinese league where the future greats will be playing, the EPL money will go down.

However, since the last the referendum, we have had a Tory majority elected in the General Election and an EU referendum which will pull Scotland out of the EU. The Labour party appears terminally ill and the Lib Dems are all but finished. Putting aside the economic argument, this has created democratic crisis in Scotland, voters up here are helpless to the will of the English electorate and people are not happy with the status quo. Perhaps the SNP would risk it on this alone. Is this enough to deliver a Yes vote? Personally, I don’t think so…but events recently…who knows anymore…shaking my head in disbelief seems to be a regular occurrence in the times we live in.
