Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

  1. David 66,

    Hope all is well.

Can’t agree with you ‘re Paddy Roberts.

He has only made 29 appearances between the 3 loan clubs since he left Celtic.

It’s all about opinions, but I think that particular boat has sailed.

    Cheers and HH.

  2. Has young Master Dembele’s ship sailed? He looks to have the talent to back up the hype and has, at least until now, appeared to have been patient to get game time. I am guessing he does not want to renew his contract without some kind of assurance he is going to make the first team on a regular basis.

Is he good enough? Is he just too small? I thought (still think) putting him out on loan to might have helped evaluate him better. He needs to be playing against hardened pros to see how he copes. Motherwell, for example, would be a good shout and allow him to stay at home with his family.

He has had so much support from the Club up until now it would be sad to see him walk away for free next June.

  3. Hopefully Colley gets a chance to flower here at our club.

    I’ll get ma coat…

  4. From KDS. A guy who watched Sampdoria quite a lot. Take from it what you will:

I’m not saying Colley wouldn’t do a job for us. I’m just skeptical of the price.

    Positives are as follows:

    He’s athletic and strong.

    He’s left sided.

He has missed little time due to injury in every professional season he’s played.

He’s done well in back 2 pairing and would probably improve in back 3.

He’s survived Raneris bizare squad rotation in which he picks a new cb pairing week in week out. Doing well considering.

He’s survived playing with The absolutely awful Tonelli. Tonelli makes Scott Mckenna look like Paulo maldini.

He’s actually not bad at passing and seems to hoof the ball to the hard working gabbiadini for many a goal. In fact, that might have been samps only offense since xmas.

He’s probably been samps second or third best player in am awful season. When i say this, i mean he’s one of three that get pass marks.

He’s protected one of the worst goalies on the planet for two seasons.

    Negatives:

He’s played 2 seasons serie A but most of career bouncing around finland belgium and sweden. You might argue that those leagues are better or equal to spfl, but our recent transfer business there been poor.

    Not convinced he’s really 27.

While his passing seems relatively accurate, his technique isn’t that great. His kicking off the ball often strange. He seems to scuff the ball when passing. He frequently makes passes and it looks like the ball going directly to opposition and it ends up with the samp midfield. His passing sometimes similar to efe. While i’m not as invested in samp, his passing sometimes makes me shampoo myself. Its not thst he doesn’t get the ball there. Its the fact he makes risky passes.

We should not spend over 5 mil on this player. Samp are needing cash. 4 mil probably about right. Loan to buy would be no bad option.

  5. GREENPINATA

+1. Paddy Roberts was a flash in the pan who has turned into just another journeyman pro switching clubs every season without making any kind of impact.

  6. From everything I hear and read on here and elsewhere we have a problem because we have an old school manager in a modern and changing era. Uneducated in football I maybe but I don’t see any evidence of tactics from our team – we look like a group of good players put on the park with no obvious plan – we have better players so just play and you’ll win. Just doesn’t work anymore and most worryingly for me in the “thunder” is non existent- in particular we start games at at snails pace. It is not a good combination and the question is if we were hiring a manager today would NL be on the shortlist?

On another matter the huns are being smart with transfers out – loaning out guys who are not great but decent but that can’t play against them makes our opposition better but does not effect them. If we were doing it we would be patting each other on the back.

  7. G’ mornin’ troops, hopefully a 3 point victory today sees the wee sleekit(s) put back in the box……

Well, at least we’ll have plenty of Sunday kick offs to look forward to again this season (!).

Would like to see Turnbull get his run out today, especially given that comments this week make it unlikely Ollie and Big Tam will be here much longer. Will be particularly strange from Motherwell’s perspective, so we can use their unease at seeing Turnbull starting against them to our advantage.

Polish Paddy and / or Ajeti up front for me if OE remains unfit.

Mainly, though, no bizarre positional team selections please – seen that movie too many times, and there is never a happy ending.

Should be too strong for Motherwell who – while playing better than results suggest – are much weakened by the loss of their best midfielder.

    Cannae wait for kickoff!!!!

Can’t remember exact date but BBC was not available in Ireland, we just didn’t ever get to see a Celtic game,

Then we got word that a pub in Shannon about 60/70 miles away had a reception, how they had it I don’t know.

In addition it was a base for a Limerick CSC and they were showing what I think was Celtic’s opening game of the Season. Strangely enough it was a midweek game with an 8 o clock kick off.

Myself & my Celtic buddy drove to pub & watched us lose to Motherwell, think it was 1-2 & as soon as game over drove back.

Reaching Cahir about 12 miles from home we stopped at a mobile van & had one of the most beautiful feeds of fish & chips I ever tasted

When Neil joined us in December 2000 our newspapers actually employed somebody to look for “angry” photographs of our manager … it’s not coincidence McCoist is always pictured “smiling” and our manager always “angry” … over the years it’s actually worked .. one is a cheeky chappy who is a shoite manager and our manager is believed to be a very angry person …

Neil Lennon will do for me

Hopefully it’s all about the fitba today 🍀

  19. Chris Houghton is a decent manager and has done a good job everywhere he’s been. However, he’s lost every job after fans turned on him for playing dire football. His teams were set up to negate, not to open the kind of packed defences we see in Scotland.

I’m not saying he’s a bad manager and I think he’d be a good shout for an ambitious Championship club trying to get up – Derby, Forest, Birmingham etc but not suited for what we want or need.

I personally think changing the manager now would be playing Russian Roulette with our season but if we do, it has to be for someone who can play the kind of football we need and that the fans desire.

Chris Houghton – not for me.

I mentioned a few days ago how in the early 70s I depended on bbc world service for Celtic results and if the reception was poor and I missed the score I had to wait 3 months for the Sunday papers to arrive from home…

  26. Mohamed Sissoko believes the Hoops gaffer’s return last year spelled the end for the striker.

The agent of Celtic misfit Vakoun Issouf Bayo has blasted Hoops manager Neil Lennon for not giving the Ivorian striker a chance in Glasgow.

Sissoko insisted Lennon ‘s arrival to replace Brendan Rodgers meant his client would no longer feature.

The change of manager at Celtic made it complicated for him because it wasn’t the current manager who signed him. That’s the only reason he didn’t play.

“But everyone else at Celtic was unanimous in praising his qualities.

“Therefore, his playing time was reduced to nothing.

“He knows how to score goals. He is a proper No.9 and can play in a partnership or on his own.

  27. we should be building team around OE not trying to hunt him , imo he is currently going through the motions as he knows Lenny has his favourites who he will select no matter what, if Lenny took him to the side and told him he was first on the team sheet we would imo see a far superior player.
