Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

  1. Serious question.

Scottish league winners get option for Europe.

Champions League qualification rounds as we have it now or automatic Europa League group stage, meaning second placed Scottish team has to take Champions League qualification round if Europa league option taken?

Because it;s all about the money right?

  2. Today is a bit of a lose lose.

If we win or win with ease it will be marked as routine.

However I would go as far as saying as today’s match is crucial to our season.

Anything other than 3pts and the cloud of misery on top of the manager might be too much.

Should not be the case at this stage in the season but I am kind of amazed at the amount of celtic fans I have seen post or in real life who really want to see him go.

    Not me.

    I stick by him 100%……

If someone is ‘in the know’ and leaking team line-ups, what’s to stop them leaking any dressing room information? Not good!

  4. St Stivs

Why does leaking the team give an opposition advantage?

    Really?

    Are you for real?

  5. GFTB.

    Sorry for delay.

    Internet problems, first for ages.

My whole place can work from home but until that happened there was definitely a divide.

    JVR Skypes me.

Funny how Brown’s leadership skills seem not that important when getting put out at home by mediocre European teams.

It speaks volumes for the team if he is the only player capable of showing leadership.

As for being the best in his position. Defensively he is better than CalMac, but given his deficiencies going forward, on balance CalMac is miles ahead of him.

Plus, you have to ask, do we need him at home v Motherwell. Nevermind that he is a 35 year old playing 3 times a week. It’s mismanagement.

players playing in unusual positions to accommodate others ,you don’t need me to answer that.

Is Jerime Frimpong ever played as a right winger in his short career ?

One hour and thirty-five minutes to go…(eternity)

    Come on clock…move yerself!

  9. The point about ending the season early is a good one.

Lots of debate last season about calling the league “as is”, “null and void” etc.

What we could agree on is that there was no precedent and whatever the outcome, there would have to be some element of making it up on the spot.

My question is, have the SFA learned from this and put rules in place just in case it happens again? Will the league be called “as is” after a certain amount of games? Anything under 15 games, there’s an argument for null and void but are there rules in place now?

  10. Saint Stivs

Any manager would love to know who was playing for opposition well in advance or else why doesn’t Lenny announce it first thing in the morning ?

Also many CQNers in foreign climbs with limited access use the site for team information before games and it is confusing if teams are posted without “this would be my team” and then can turn out to be wrong.

Annoying as I’ve been in that situation where access to CQN isn’t reliable.

  11. I am, what advange does it give ? with 2 hours to go to kick off.

does it make the other teams players better ?

does the opposition manager look at our team and say lets explot x cos he is the week link in the celtic team ?

i am pretty sure the opposition looks at all the celtic players and think, it doesnt matter who we start with, they are all better than my teams

unless neil plays frompong in goal.

if the rumoured team is the team, what change do you think the mothwell manager frantically makes now having worked on a gameplan all week ?

hey messi get stripped, they played right into our hands by playing so and so.

  12. Barakas (should be Bain until Barkas gets used to playing for Celtic)

should be other way about , play the £5m goalie to get used our defenders

  13. JNP 1.23pm

Cheers, still in contact with JVR as well and he had mentioned he has been in contact with yourself… don’t enjoy the travelling but sometimes going into work sort of keeps things a bit normal… only downside is daily/hourly contact with AoW :-)

Would you believe that’s still in discussion?

You seen what it was like with the vote, everyone is acting out of self interest, joke of an organisation.

I don’t disagree about wee Frimpong dint think he was signed as a right winger … funnily enough I think he is actually a terrible defender but his pace is an asset

Waiting for the game to start……..time is going so slow, this time yesterday it was half past four.

  17. Paul67 warned that today could be difficult, citing the Dunfermline game as precedent.

Many posters are decrying the team claiming Neil has made obvious mistakes.

Me, I’ll take my chances on what I see during the game rather than speculate on beforehand. I’ve seen too many “no-brainer” choices to have proven to be “no brainer” in a different sense of the phrase than what was intended.

Winning today will not heal the wounds caused by our surprise and unnecessary Euro exit or for having to play catch up with Stevie G, master tactician……… but it will be a start of the healing.

We can only heal the CL exit by qualifying for the Europa and having a good go at it like last year- that will not be easy. I would have preferred to have actually made CL even if it did result in some pumpings but that’s gone for the season now.

We cannot overtake Stevie G’s mob until they start shipping points again, so the best we can do is keep on winning and pressuring them to slip.

In those circumstances, I will accept a narrow win today as anything but a win will lead to further upheaval and unrest.

I would prefer a comfortable win but, I’ll accept it if

    a) we do not concede more than 1 goal today to give our forwards a chance and

    b) We score more than the 1 or 0 conceded.

My prediction 3:0- James Forrest hat trick :-)

  18. My prediction today will be for James Forrest to shut all the doubters up with two goals and an assist or two.

Sick of hearing him get slated on here.

Here is a guy 100% commited to our club who shock horror as a creative attacking player sometimes has quiet spells.

We are lucky to have him and dropping him is a big mistake.

  19. GFTB

A.O.W will be gunning for you.

It took me about 2 weeks to get used to it, now I don’t want to return.

Work are delighted, sick leave has plummeted and productivity has increased.

Staff aren’t having to put up with usual travel fails. Work will soon safe a fortune on rental costs when lease expires.

Interestingly I read that 10/15 years ago, internet wouldn’t have coped with all this, so the time was ripe for the next big see change in the ” industrial revolution”

  20. Starting life as a winger, Manchester City kept him in the shadows, humming and hawing over his build. Change came when he scored twice against Middlesbrough’s academy team and earned a promotion to the top team for his age group.

Shortly after that, the regular right-back was injured and Frimpong filled in as a substitute. After the game, academy coach Alan Wright spoke the four words which changed the course of his life.

‘Alan said to me: “This is your position.” He said: “You could be one of the best right-backs in the world if you master it.”

‘At first I wasn’t sure. I didn’t say yes straight away. I thought about it and thought: ‘Let’s give it a try.’

  21. ExSlaemuirBhoy on

Good players all have bad spells at some point in their career, best way to overcome poor form is to play your way out of the slump. James is a fantastic footballer, should get all our backing as he has proved his worth for years. I think the rat has turned Calmac’s heid, maybe Jamesy too.

  22. David Turnbull played a total of 41 games for Motherwell, scoring 16 goals.

    Only 2 last season.

He is not yet an International.

He has played well at Well this season, 5 games , 1 goal.

Your all putting a lot of expectation on the young man.

  23. I have read a few posters suggesting that Lenny should stay to the end of the season then go.

What if this became common knowledge, Man U fell apart when Fergie announced retirement, it was also factor in the cheats not getting 10 with naesurname

  24. ST Stivs

These teams are getting leaked in some instances the night before.

Most teams try and guess the other teams line up, shaping is done either the day before, or in some cases, the morning of a game.

All Done specifically to stop opponents, now if you know the line up , that session can be far more beneficial, you are working on specific shapes formations and individuals.

You are vastly prepared, the element of surprise can win many a game.

Example, last week opponents Dundee Utd.

Alloa worked on a system where they allowed both Connolly and Reynolds, 2 centre halfs to be left free. Can’t pass a ball up the isle of a bus was the verdict. So they waited until either player passed forward then worked on hunting in packs, its called locked on to every midfield player, took the ball of them numerous times, then broke on them. Kept working against Und all season. Record against the run away winners was 3 draws and a defeat, knocked them out of a cup.

    Knowing your opposition is massive.

No chance of hot desking during the current climate … canny see G2 office going down that route … as for AoW he is always gunning for me :-)
