EBTs went to staff at other clubs. £10m unaccounted for

346

Assuming Sir David Murray was telling the truth to Sky News in March (bear with me), there is a £10m gap between the sum recorded in Rangers accounts as paid to EBTs and the recipients revealed by the BBC last night.

It may be that the BBC didn’t receive information on some Rangers employees but we should also consider what other non-employees received payment from an Employee Benefit Trust, like Graeme Souness, who was employed by another club at the time.

What other clubs’ employees received a piece of that £10m?  Was it only Blackburn Rovers?  Did they know about it?  Did an employee of another SPL club receive payment from Rangers Employee Benefit Trust?

What about journalists?  The cosy relationship between football clubs and sports journalists has been one of the most incongruous features of this debacle.

What about officials?  Yes, officials?

We know cash went out of the company, we know how much is unaccounted for, we just don’t know where it went.  The already-established multi-association nature of these revelations (it involved a club registered by the Football Association in England) puts the matter beyond the immediate scope of the Scottish authorities, which is some comfort.

Many of the facts have been revealed but this will be a story that is still giving a decade from now.  Before Rangers disappear into the ether, the authorities (football and other) must use all leverage possible to discover where that £10m went.

I didn’t see a penny.  Did you?

I am still trying to digest the enormity of what was revealed last night. This could take a while.

I haven’t tarred anyone. I am only going on what i was told by a guy who is playing in England and has played for some decent Championship clubs. Look at BBC’s own website, the story is not screaming out at you. This is barely causing a whimper in England and you have to ask why? Is it because it’s not anything new to football journalists. The leading light on this in England is Alex Thompson, not a football writer and I don’t believe too many English hacks good and bad have had Murray’s succulent lamb. Alan Brazil on talksport who is a big Celt wasn’t even talking about it. I know they are cheats but as I have said it seems within footballing circles it’s an open secret and a common practice and Rangers seem to be the stupid one’s who left a paper trail.

Assuming the EBT couldn’t write cheques out to pay ‘cash’, I’d like to see an investigation of all payments made out of the EBT and a corresponding investigation into the bank accounts of James/Jim Traynor, Chick Young, A Forsyth etc etc. Then a review of the bank account of Hugh Dallas etc etc. An interesting man with an interesting business history – how many company insolvencies has he gone through? Would he / his companies been a soft target for the rogue £?

Paul67 – just pondering your “suggestion” that people outwith Rangers may have been paid via the EBT system – officials etc.

I know I’m the simple type but it was called the “Employee Benefit Trust” and I would have therefore thought that only employees could benefit from it.

So….. how did Souness get paid? Under what auspices did they manage to swing that payment?

  16. It would explain some of Collum’s performances…

FIFA says referees could soon undergo testing for banned performance enhancing drugs.

FIFA’s chief medical officer Jiri Dvorake says referees are part of the game and should be treated like players.

Dvorak tells FIFA’s medical conference there is no indication of a doping problem among referees “but it’s something we have to consider.”

FIFA also was asked to advise the World Anti-Doping Agency on when players serving doping bans should be allowed to return to training with team-mates.

Current WADA rules prevent suspended players working with their teams – effectively extending their ban if they are not match-ready immediately after completing a ban

WADA director general David Howman acknowledges that penalties can be harsher for team players than for individual athletes.

  17. Paul67 – I’m now reminded of a blog post from a while back along the lines of ‘why would a company pay a former employee £500k (years??) after he has left’ and it got me wondering: is there £470k the Beeb doesn’t know about?

All supporters should be warned that they could be in a similar situation in their own leagues, with their own teams if the mess in Govan is not brought to the right and proper conclusion. Scottish football may be classed as second rate but maladministration is no less serious just because it is perpetrated by second class offenders. All of football is affected just as any crime affects everybody in society.”

CQN Magazine “Go Tell The English” May ’12 Issue 08.

It would appear that the Souness case may confirm the fears expressed above. Perhaps some decent English journalist might now consider investigating their game more thoroughly and help Scottish footballing bodies with investigations they would appear to be incompetent to carry out by themselves.

  20. So we all know that ex huns who go on to manage other clubs seem to do favours for them. At times when they need cash players like Boumsong disappear for big transfer fees. And now it seems that many of these managers received cash via EBTs.

Is there any connection? Or is it just coincidence?

Souness was paid while Blackburn manager. We now know that – but not why. What about McLeish? Any interestingly timed payments there? Didn’t Ostenstat sell them Velicka (sp?) when he was a manager in Norway?

I’m aware Paul covered this in his article but like gerryg(?) I don’t think it’s enough to just say “nothing to see here” when the BBC have implied that we failed to disclose to the SFA payments to a player through an EBT.

The issue isn’t whether we paid the tax due to HMRC on this EBT, it’s whether we were obliged, under the player registration rules of UEFA and the SFA to include this payment in our player reg submissions to the SFA and whether we did so or not.

I do not believe for a minute that Celtic have a case to answer as I believe this was a severance arrangement (as postulated by gerryg) however the implication by the BBC leads to questions being raised. Celtic could put this to bed easily with a simple statement outlining the EBT was not related to playing activities and therefore did not require disclosure.

Further silence allows the media to speculate and takes the sole focus from Rangers (IA).

  24. Big Swee walks on with Neil Lennon on

I think the key thing for non playing staff would be the timing of the payments and to track if there were any “events” that took place around that time that would benefit a certain club and it’s owner.

Leave aside the dual contracts for a minute, bearing in mind that players are, on average, less than needle sharp when it comes to things financial, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that some ranjurz players didn’t know what an EBT was or that an EBT had been agreed.

The question I would like to see asked is: how many agents negotiated payments/side letters; who ‘these people’ (c) FPLG, are; were any agents beneficiaries of MIM/RFC(ia) EBTs – given that agents are typically paid a percentage of deal. And finally, did the provision of a side letter depend on particular agent(s)?
