Efe and Izzie getting hard time on TV

754

I was slightly miffed at Neil Lennon’s TV comments on Efe Ambrose yesterday, “He can’t cross”, but on reflection, better Neil points out the player’s flaws to the nation than gives him a ringing endorsement.  I’d a similar sentiment after Emilio Izaguirre’s dangerous looking forward step against France, which was never in danger of making contact with an opponent, when an ever-unhelpful commentator assured us Izzie, “has that in his locker”.  Anyone who has watched him for four years will know he doesn’t.

Based purely on what’s been offered up on UK TV, neither player will be attracting an offer, which is good.

Both Honduras and Nigeria have a difficult task ahead if they are to remain in the tournament beyond the group stage.  Fraser Forster’s England also have it all to do.  It’s been great for the three of them to get to the World Cup but the sooner they’re home, uninjured, the better.

I have no in depth knowledge of JC although i know more about him than you

There is indeed no criteria or restrictions on having opinions on the blog, it is a blog after all so post away

You offered up a post which you were challenged on that is all that happened

  2. Izzy’s played ok in a poor team. He’s had a couple of un-characteristic moments against England initially and France. The ‘has it in his locker comment’ … Obviously made by someone who doesn’t know much about him…was it Andy Townsend, that well known Irish England supporter? The commentator Pearce is hopeless. Efe’s played ok also in an under performing team.

John Collins, great player and one of the most astute pundits on the TV. However he’s number two and needs to gel with the new manager. Hope it works.

Time will tell I guess but I am excited (in a restrained way) by the appointment.

When asked the question, Ronny handled it well. He did what all good interviewees do, he thought before answering. He paused and confirmed that he was talking to John Collins amongst others. That killed the topic for the press corps and Ronny moved on to the next question.

I have difficulty in believing that Ronny would disrupt his whole life, bring his wife and twin girls to a new job in a foreign country, a job that he got based on his own ethos of coaching, managing, training and team selection – and yet somehow would accept an assistant being foisted on him against his better judgement. An assistant who could disrupt his whole system.

Alternatively, PL has some devious plan and JCs appointment is part of that.

Or maybe JC has the plan. Maybe that plan is to be part of a successful management team at a club he loves as it plays in the CL. Maybe JC is convinced that his coaching beliefs have found a great place to flourish, and that his ambitions can best be fulfilled at Celtic.

    Loving the new management team.

I have met John Collins on several occasions and found him opinionated and charming in equal measures, I have had a few good discussions with him and find him smart, engaging and a great listener. Delighted today.

What the players will see is professionalism from top to bottom…something that was a bit lax with Lenny and the previous regime.

I for one am looking forward to the new season and the new management team.

  5. Negative, negative, why do people on here have to be so negative. To base an opinion on a presumption is really a silly thing to do. Wait and see how the partnership works out, then form an opinion. I mean to say the decision has been made, so as supporters lets back it. If it turns out the wrong one, then we can moan. Que BTM

Ronny has a huge personality I just hope he can keep it and nurture it into something even bigger ! I just thought it would be easier if he appointed his own man

Imo the Collins appointment was not entirely his own decision

  7. Welcome back to Celtic John Collins. Conflicting views about this one but hope it works out.

It’s a bit of a worry about the fitness levels and that people think they should improve, surely it’s the fitness coaches and sports science divisions job to have players at peak fitness?

  11. Hope John Kennedy gets the first team coach position. Succession planning. We could have our next three managers working together next season!!

Maybe John Collins seen the hassle that comes with being Celtic manager, and can settle into being an AM.I gather he had reservations about taking the job, interference from above being his worry, hope that has been settled.

  13. John Collins was a brilliant player with an ego to match – not a criticism incidentally.

He’s a very intelligent Bhoy. I think we should trust him to have sufficient self awareness as a man in his mid 40s to be able to judge for himself if he can work as no2 in a new coaching team.

Moi? I’m chuffed to bits and expect my beloved Hoops to be fit for purpose (literally) and to play some really progressive technical fitba’.

Let’s pap this World Cup tae…..and get the hoops back on the pitch.

That cant be true Bada Bing he is a PL plant in there to undermine RD

Will the real JC stand up

    (1) Compliant club appointment made behind RD’s back in case RD fails

    (2) Balshy individual who answers to no one and is his own man

  16. I think Neil left in a huff. My theory is that mid and late season he was asked to play a more attacking game to keep fan interest. He would be annoyed at the interference and the subsequent Champions League tactics (and “gubbings”) were meant to make his point known to PL. Late season Celtic were more fun to watch; more offence, adventure etc.

I believe both PL ( we need fan interest) and NL (I decide the tactics) were correct……but they were at an impasse.

Good luck to Neil in the future, and welcome Ronny

All your points are correct of course it may well be the successful partnership we wish for.

John Collins was an exceptional player but like you said a man with a strong opinion which became inflated a little after the good life in Monaco perhaps.

Not begrudging the ghuy a good life but I don’t recall him being too much concerned about Celtics welfare over there when back home we were going through the hell of their 9 in a row

lionroars67- GM- I have been critical of PL/JP influence consistently ,but i think it was vital to Ronnie to have knowledge from someone who knows Scottish football, thankfully not Houston ,Frail or others mentioned on here.If RD & JC can work together within their roles,it could be a very good partnership.HH

John Collins honoured his contract as a footballer at Celtic. He performed to the best of his ability and gave us some great moments. He was being grossly underpaid for his talent and took his opportunity to better himself when, and not before, his contract expired.

Why should someone who plays for Celtic be expected to accept a lower wage than he is worth? Get real.

Well aren’t all the positive comments based on presumption? Yet you don’t mention them.

The point, and people seem to be ignoring it, is that the new management team represents serious downsizing at Celtic.

I just wish people would get a sense of perspective and see what’s going on rather than trying to out do one another with the effusiveness of their enthusiasm for every development.

  28. Glad to see John Collins as the next assistant to Ronnie. They have a common approach to football and on the surface look like they will work well together.

Was he forced on Ronnie by PL? No idea.

Did he want to bring his own assistant with him? No idea.

Did his assistant want to leave Scandinavia and come to Scotland? No idea.

Do I have issue with negative speculation? Yes.

I think like most Celtic supporters I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Why not give these guys the benefit of the doubt?

Why look for trouble with no basis in fact?

That’s not to say we need to be board drones, but at least give the guys a chance before you start all the speculative moaning.

  29. Greeninbingley on

Ernie, I can’t see how the hiring of one of the brightest young coaches in Europe as a replacement for Lenny can be seen as downsizing. It’s a gamble, yes, but anybody would have been a gamble.

Similarly with the replacement of Johann with John Collins.

Malky Mac, or Owen Coyle, or even Jackie Mac – THAT would have been downsizing.

  30. Did Ronny’s assistant in Norway not get done with match fixing as a player?

I’m sure I read that somewhere. There was absolutely no danger he would be coming to Celtic if that was the case.

John Collins will do well with Celtic. Nobody has mentioned his contacts yet and knowledge of the French game. Hopefully he can pick up a few gems. Not sure what languages Ronny can speak but JC is a French speaker and that can be usdeful with the players. Modern managers learn new languages. I think Brendan Rodgers speaks 3 at the minute and is learning another language. Foreign coaches usually know at least 2 or 3 languages.

To be fair….it’s not usually as long as that.

  34. LiviBhoy

He was indeed done for match fixing:

Nielsen has attracted controversy at various times in his career for falling into serious gambling debt, assaulting a team mate and then, in November 2008, admitting matchfixing in a Danish game played in 2004.

Could explain why he’s not coming to Celtic.
