EPL TV deal: a way forward for Celtic

1285

Some thoughts to the 70% increase in English Premier League TV income:

Our financial strategy

Stop feeling sorry for ourselves.  We are not part of the easy-money league, so instead of complaining about Burnley’s financial strength, exploit the massive inefficiencies in England.  Lazy recruitment strategies, unscientific risk-taking and chronic managerial processes put a lot of money on the table for those who know how to run a football club properly.

If your forward business model involves selling players, better to be close to a rich, lazy, unscientific and chronic league.

Player values

After the last increase in TV income in England was announced transfer fees appreciated markedly, even before the increase came into effect.  Forgive the impersonal language, but player commodities are more valuable this week than they were last week, not just in England, but in Scotland and everywhere else.

The goalkeeper we sold for £10m last summer would command a higher fee, if we sold him next summer.  A player we ‘hoped’ to earn £7m from selling should now have his target value adjusted to £10m.

More than ever, it is important to manage playing assets.  Buy assets with development potential, hoard their registrations if necessary – Benfica employ and loan-out players to top leagues who would easily get into their first team.  It helps build the player’s value, which helps build Benfica.

Player trading velocity

If player trading is important going forward, my hunch is that trading velocity should increase.  To do this properly, it is absolutely crucial we invest more in the scouting process.  Scouting and recruitment is as important to the club as tactics and team selection.  Resource it accordingly.

SPFL TV deal

I’ve read lots about what we should do next in Scotland with regards to our TV deal, some ideas have merit, some not.  What is perfectly clear is that the current deal is practically worthless.  We must change.  The potential downside is almost immaterial, as we’re starting from such a low point.

Bin SKY and BT, go it alone, or get one of the new media players involved, or better still, collaborate with the Dutch league, which has its own TV channel, have learned some lessons, have many of our challenges, and would benefit from the fresh content we could provide.  There are more leagues in Europe with exactly the same challenges, if a pan-European league is a step too far, a collaborative TV infrastructure is a good start.

In football TV terms, we are the Straw Man, with nothing to lose.  Lead a path away from Sky and BT, educate fans on how to link up with Virgin, Amazon or an equivalent, do something genuinely radical.

The Bubble

It’s a bubble.  Just because the English TV market has not burst, doesn’t mean it’s not going to. Ask yourself a few questions:

Is this level of contract affordable by Sky or BT?

Will this new cash make the downside of relegation from the EPL any easier?

Will this cash make EPL clubs any more likely to change their business model, specifically, will they be more likely to spend less because they no longer fear relegation?

No, no and no.  The downside of relegation from the EPL will become more onerous and clubs will fear relegation more.

Sky are enjoying enormous market power but the entrance into the market of Amazon Prime, Netflix and others, while the offerings from Virgin and BT have matured, leaves Sky open to competition in the TV and film market in the future which they have never experienced before.

You no longer need Sky to watch multi-channel TV, round-the-clock news, recent or legacy films.  Their failure to maintain future Champions League rights, together with the fact that they are legislated out of the World Cup and European Championship rights, reduces their assets down to one lucrative prize: English Premier League football.

English Premier League football is the asset they are betting the farm on.  They need this and as long as the ‘farm’ exists in the form of a nation uniformly consuming TV through them, they will pay whatever they can to retain these rights.

BT are in the process of buying market share.  They are vastly better funded than Sky and need a strategic place going forward (which traditionally telephony isn’t).

It’s not a case of if Sky’s ability or desire to pay changes but when.  Then the bubble will burst, then football will plunge into a reverse gear.

Until then, we play the system.

Busy week for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner bookings (Friday 13 March, Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park).  Email me for booking details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Last night I popped round to the Horse and Hound to join Crossword Dave (always doing them and is the Pub quizmaster) and Graham who lives in David Murrays (Ex Rangers owner) old Jersey home. Both are great company and lovely guys. Last week there was a blind chap by the name of Glen (big man with long hair and blessed with a wicked sense of humour especially regarding his disability) sitting next to us in the bar and we introduced ourselves and then chatted away to him. He explained that he was doing a wee check of the area as he was due to move in to a new house and wanted to find a local that made him feel welcome.

On going into the bar last night last night Dave (who is very chatty and occasionally humorous) was already there and he was standing next to the seated Glen who incidentally moved into the Parish yesterday. The normal pleasantries were exchanged and Dave ordered me a Guinness as he had already got his lager in. Graham arrived as this was happening so another pint was called for and was delivered with the usual proficiency and courtesy of the friendly staff.

Due to the split service and movement of the pints on the bar Dave then looks at the array of pints and asked ‘Which one is mine’? Glen replied ‘yours is the full one on the right’. Now there was a pause in the conversation as Glen took a sip out of his pint. Dave then said ‘by God you may be blind but that was very perceptive of you, I am looking at the bar and wasn’t sure which pint was which but you are completely right, mines is indeed the one on the right – but how could you possibly know that it is still full’? Glen who was carefully putting his glass back on the bar replied without as much of a smile ‘because you haven’t stopped f*^*ing talking sine you came in. Glen mate – we are going to be pals.

Friday night on ‘the journey’ has been great TV, but operation save Sevco will crank up a gear as not making the play off game becomes a distinct possibility. Hard to imagine I know, but they’ve lost something since Super Salary slung his hook, and McTrowell could follow him to the garden, if they find someone daft enough to try and right the sunken ship.

They are not a good side, but will be far too strong for most other first division outfits, and ‘the assistance’ will move into overdrive complete with the loanees, they’ll make the play offs.

In a one off tie that assistance will make the SPL a formality.

  20. Morning all

    A wee plea from me.

Celtic are playing in just over 3 hours time. Although they have rarely had particularly good teams in all the years we have been going up to Perth I cannot remember too many really easy wins up at either Muirton or McDiarmid and today might well be the trickiest of all the matches we have had since the New Year. I trust that Ronny will not repeat the mistake he made prior to the Maribor match in playing a much weakened team – at this stage of the season with a handy but hardly decisive lead in the league a win today is more important than how we do next Thursday.

So my plea is for the next three hours and also the duration of the game at least can we have just a little break from the political rancour that seems to be the lot of the blog these days,

This blog is I thought about Celtic but I like the way it can trail off in to discussions about politics, music, movies, whisky , catholic education in the 1960s, the aerodynamics of the bumble bee or even knicker elastic ( I may have made one or two of these up) because football and Celtic are not actually the most important things in my or anybody else’s life here but it (CQN) is , principally, about Celtic. I like that things can get heated and we have all lost the rag with someone at some stage – even a placid, teetotaller such as myself.

But I do not think it should be a vehicle for the promotion of any political party and I think increasingly this is happening here. Having political opinions is a good thing and in the last 18 months this country has had a genuinely interesting and exciting time politically- uniquely so in my lifetime . For once the outcome of a UK Election on this side of the border with England is throwing up the distinct possibility of something new and that is worth talking about. But I can only write for myself here when I admit to being completely fed up with the regurgitation of political sound bites learned at party meetings or from party literature. Some of the contributions are witty – Philvis- or acidly succinct if from Ernie Lynch and I do like their interjections even if I disagree with the sentiments but others are hectoring, designed to offend and condescending. And others come from our very own answer to Katie Hopkins and are delivered like something out of a Airstrip One newsreel complete with BLOCK CAPITAL letters thrown in to empathise that Katie thinks we are too thick to understand what is being said so witlessly. Most of this hectoring, ill thought out reheating of something gleaned from a party pamphlet ( usually SNP or Labour – ironically the only two parties I have ever voted for in the last 35 years) is incredibly boring but it can more pertinently be seen as advertising. If people really do think that this blog is a place to air the narrow views of one particular party then buy a bloody ad space on the site or in the magazine and put your money where your mouth is.

So I have been writing this so long it is now rather less than three hours to kick off and do not expect it to make a blind bit of difference to anybody that it would be aimed at but this has been bothering me for some time. I am a Celtic fan and this is the blog of my choice. Being ranted at by people who rarely, if ever, express any of the long held affection I – and almost everybody else who reads and contributes whether ‘mine shafter’ or ‘happy clapper’ -have for Celtic here is not why I have chosen it.

So please a wee bit of humour, a wee bit of discussion about anything that isn’t just a reheating of the referendum debate. And then at 3.15 and the match report has been posted you can go back to shouting at each other pointlessly.

    Mon the Hoops.
