EPL TV deal: a way forward for Celtic

1285

Some thoughts to the 70% increase in English Premier League TV income:

Our financial strategy

Stop feeling sorry for ourselves.  We are not part of the easy-money league, so instead of complaining about Burnley’s financial strength, exploit the massive inefficiencies in England.  Lazy recruitment strategies, unscientific risk-taking and chronic managerial processes put a lot of money on the table for those who know how to run a football club properly.

If your forward business model involves selling players, better to be close to a rich, lazy, unscientific and chronic league.

Player values

After the last increase in TV income in England was announced transfer fees appreciated markedly, even before the increase came into effect.  Forgive the impersonal language, but player commodities are more valuable this week than they were last week, not just in England, but in Scotland and everywhere else.

The goalkeeper we sold for £10m last summer would command a higher fee, if we sold him next summer.  A player we ‘hoped’ to earn £7m from selling should now have his target value adjusted to £10m.

More than ever, it is important to manage playing assets.  Buy assets with development potential, hoard their registrations if necessary – Benfica employ and loan-out players to top leagues who would easily get into their first team.  It helps build the player’s value, which helps build Benfica.

Player trading velocity

If player trading is important going forward, my hunch is that trading velocity should increase.  To do this properly, it is absolutely crucial we invest more in the scouting process.  Scouting and recruitment is as important to the club as tactics and team selection.  Resource it accordingly.

SPFL TV deal

I’ve read lots about what we should do next in Scotland with regards to our TV deal, some ideas have merit, some not.  What is perfectly clear is that the current deal is practically worthless.  We must change.  The potential downside is almost immaterial, as we’re starting from such a low point.

Bin SKY and BT, go it alone, or get one of the new media players involved, or better still, collaborate with the Dutch league, which has its own TV channel, have learned some lessons, have many of our challenges, and would benefit from the fresh content we could provide.  There are more leagues in Europe with exactly the same challenges, if a pan-European league is a step too far, a collaborative TV infrastructure is a good start.

In football TV terms, we are the Straw Man, with nothing to lose.  Lead a path away from Sky and BT, educate fans on how to link up with Virgin, Amazon or an equivalent, do something genuinely radical.

The Bubble

It’s a bubble.  Just because the English TV market has not burst, doesn’t mean it’s not going to. Ask yourself a few questions:

Is this level of contract affordable by Sky or BT?

Will this new cash make the downside of relegation from the EPL any easier?

Will this cash make EPL clubs any more likely to change their business model, specifically, will they be more likely to spend less because they no longer fear relegation?

No, no and no.  The downside of relegation from the EPL will become more onerous and clubs will fear relegation more.

Sky are enjoying enormous market power but the entrance into the market of Amazon Prime, Netflix and others, while the offerings from Virgin and BT have matured, leaves Sky open to competition in the TV and film market in the future which they have never experienced before.

You no longer need Sky to watch multi-channel TV, round-the-clock news, recent or legacy films.  Their failure to maintain future Champions League rights, together with the fact that they are legislated out of the World Cup and European Championship rights, reduces their assets down to one lucrative prize: English Premier League football.

English Premier League football is the asset they are betting the farm on.  They need this and as long as the ‘farm’ exists in the form of a nation uniformly consuming TV through them, they will pay whatever they can to retain these rights.

BT are in the process of buying market share.  They are vastly better funded than Sky and need a strategic place going forward (which traditionally telephony isn’t).

It’s not a case of if Sky’s ability or desire to pay changes but when.  Then the bubble will burst, then football will plunge into a reverse gear.

Until then, we play the system.

Ghuys, I see some others have appealed for the political posts to stop. I’d also like to join them in that appeal. For 9 or 10 months before the IndyRef we were assailed on here by political posts to the detriment of the blog, imp. Previously unseen posters like BillyBhoy 05 suddenly became regulars and posted little else but their political views. I doubt if a single poster on here was swayed by anything posted.

More recently Alfie Noakes has suddenly emerged in a similar way. His views are the opposite of Billy Bhoy’s but I doubt if he’ll persuade anyone over to his cause who is opposed to it at the moment. The only thing these political post(er)s are doing is causing division and dissent among Celtic supporters. We already have a Board, manager and a huge pool of players whose job it is to do that. Oh ……….. and a pretendy wee team playing out of Ibrox masquerading as a former big club.

Please drop the politics and get back to the merits of square/sliced sausage, toasted/roasted cheese and does anyone remember the days of how to fit a whirligig in the back garden?

The Inside Line on Unfashionable Football

    A life in Football ? Choose wisely , I didn’t !

Posted on 1 Hour Ago by Moo Ted

For any parent who takes their child to play youth football every weekend it is undoubtedly their wish to see him/her go on to make a living in the game as a successful professional.

You see them there every week giving all forms of support , the tactical Dad telling where to make a pass or a run , the highly strung mother screaming at the top of her voice , the pushy parents who want their kid to be the best , the downright Idiots who tell their kid to get f**ked in , we have all seen them haven’t we ?

It amuses me and Infuriates me almost in equal measures whenever I go to a youth game.

It also brings it back to me how little advice or support I got from my father when I was a boy coming up through the age groups and how that lack of leadership led to me making some terrible decisions at crucial times of my career.

My father had played professionally in his day , a career that was cut short by a knee Injury sustained whilst working down the mines due to a coal buggy hurtling into his leg and damaging his right knee beyond reasonable repair.

It was what they done in that day , playing pro football and working wherever they could to bring extra money in .

I was brought up the youngest of 6 children , your typical Catholic family who held strong beliefs and morals, which in a nutshell meant no TV and no contraception !

I’m quite glad of it actually otherwise I wouldn’t be here today telling this story . However it meant that I was forever destined to wear hand me down clothes from my older brother which is a source of pleasure for him to this day . Whenever the old pictures come out at a family gathering he can be heard saying ” oh look , that’s my jacket your wearing there “. !

You can swap the word ” jacket” for Jersey, shoes, trousers and you will get the picture !

Football boots were way out of our financial budget , we could barely scrape by feeding and clothing the eight of us so football boots were an absolute no no .

I would be 13 years old before I wore my first pair of boots but until then I had to make do with whatever I had available to me .

I can remember my first proper game of 11 a side football quite vividly, I was 9 years old. Mr Malloy had announced that he had arranged a game against the boys from the next village , a game for under 12 boys !

Thankfully when Mr Malloy got round to counting all the available under 12’s he was short of players and I was picked .

I was delighted , but not half as delighted as I was in the second half when a ball came over from the right and their goalie came out and missed it , I scooped the ball up high into the net and ran off screaming yesssssss .

Mr Malloy picked me for the next game a few weeks later and I remember him saying ” your playing up front today , your a striker ” .

And that was it…… I was a striker from the age of 9 until my last days of kicking a ball at the age of 34 in the grand surroundings of Cappielow against Premier League Greenock Morton where a second cruciate ligament Injury would finish me .

I was the meat in the sandwich of a hard but fair aerial challenge with ex Ranger Brian Reid and ex Celt Stevie McCahill , and came down badly on my weak knee rupturing my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) .

It was a sort of ” Old Firm ” sandwich if you like .

Of course , we know that there will never again be an Old Firm sandwich , that shop has closed.

My youth football I Imagine was very different to most other boys and certainly very different to today’s boys who have everything laid on a plate from an organisational point .

We had no car in my day to transport us around and my father had fallen out of love with the game so did not give me a great deal of encouragement in those younger days , it was very much a case of getting a game anytime Mr Malloy organised a match which was every 3-4 weeks .

I had established by then that I was not too bad at the game if not only by my own opinion but by the fact that my brother and I were always first or second to get picked when we were having a game amongst our pals .

It was during one of those kick around games that my friends father approached me and said they were going for a trial at one of the big under 13 boys clubs along the road and that I should come . I was excited and couldn’t wait to tell my father . He was happy enough to let me go and I was delighted to go too.

I was 13 before I played a proper official game of football , I had Impressed in the trial and was signed Immediately . I remember my mother saying ” right Pat , we will need to buy him real boots now ” . I was beyond excitement to get my first pair of boots and threw everything into training and playing proper youth football .

I scored goals with those new boots and It wasn’t long before there was talk of scouts looking at me .

I remember one game against Edina Hibs through in Edinburgh where I was so cocky I had beat 3 or 4 players and rounded the goalkeeper , it had been too easy and Instead of sticking the ball into the empty net I decided to go back and beat 1 more defender just for fun , except that the defender took the ball off me and put it out for a corner. I got absolute pelters for that and it was a harsh lesson in doing things the easy way.

It didn’t seem to put off the watching scout from Hibernian FC , this was the first time I had been the subject of an official approach , they wanted me to go on trial with their official under 14 team at the end of the season.

All great you would think ? Unfortunately not !

The news that the boys club was closing down came as a bolt from the blue , there was no one to run the club the next season so the club was to fold ! And fold it did .

At this point in my life I needed someone to help with my continuation in football but my father had no Interest at that time and at 13 years of age I had no way of knowing how to get myself another team .

It wasn’t till much later on in years that I found out there had been financial irregularities at the club with lots of cash going missing and the police being involved , but nonetheless my short and sweet football life had came to a standstill.

Looking back I can’t believe that I was allowed to drift from the game , nothing came of the Hibs offer , no trial or no other contact from them . I spent the next 2 years of my life playing rugby for the school team as a scrum half and that took my attention away from football.

I would be 18 by the time I played proper football again and it was under almost the same circumstances as 5 years previously when I was Invited along to a trial with one of the big under 18 youth teams in the area.

I signed up with them and scored goals again and very quickly came attention from senior teams .

My father had taken an Interest in my under 18 football and my older brother played for one of the local under 21 teams who just happened to have reached the county cup final .

My father knew the manager of the under 21 team and was persuaded to get me to sign for them so that I could play in the final , which I did , and I scored , and we won the cup .

It was crazy , looking back it was poor advice from my dad , I had been out for 5 years and was only just finding my feet then all of a sudden I was 18 and had not yet fully developed ( I have now ) and found myself playing against 21’s and the truth is I struggled against those guy’s who were 3 years older .

I had been flying at 18’s and attracting attention again but had quickly fell away in the 21’s to the extent that I was not enjoying it and packed it in again .

This time though my quitting of that team opened up a door that eventually led to me playing professional football .

I was approached by the best under 21 team in the area and one of the best in Scotland at the time who had unbeknown to me been watching me since my under 18 days . They had seen something that they could work on and I was happy to give it a go at another team.

And then something painful and very strange occurred ….. A pre season of training !

I had never in all my life done any serious training and definitely not a proper pre season of training. It was unbelievably tough. It was also unbeleivable the change it had in me and my football .

I had put on weight but yet had not one ounce of fat on me . Pre season games rolled up and guess what ? I scored goals .

It was the beginning of a season when I would score 65 goals , a record still at the club and as far as I know its still a record in that league.

A season when I would be courted by Aston Villa , Hibs ( Again ) , Falkirk , Dundee , Motherwell and almost every team in the Scottish second division.

There was also a strange story at that time in amongst all that attention where the Dundee scout who had been watching me for a few games and was constantly asking his manager to trial me but could never get me up to Dens.

That scout quit Dens Park the week after I had scored 14 goals in one game and he had once again recommended me but to no avail !

The Dundee manager at the time was one Archie Knox .

I won’t need to remind most of you that Mr Knox was alleged to have been one of the main reasons why Aiden McGeady did not play for Scotland .

Allegedly he did not think McGeady as much of a player !

I will point out at this time that like McGeady I also have a surname which originates from Ireland .

(Just thought I would mention that) !

I eventually did get to trial with The Hibees as well as numerous others and have to say my head was upside down with all the attention . My father was now coming to every game but as always would say nothing or next to nothing after the games , he was obviously always happy for me that I was doing well but he just never had the ability to give me advice that would lead me in the right direction.

In the end I could have signed with any second division club ( second division was the lowest league at that time) or any of 4 more prominent clubs . I asked my fathers advice and he simply said ” it’s up to you son , do what you want” .

I made the biggest mistake of my football career , I chose a very good first division side without putting any real thought into it and it turned out to be the worst year of my pro career .

I needed someone to point out some of the obvious hurdles that I would come up against in signing for that team , I didn’t get that at what was the most Important time of my footballing life.

That team ended up getting promotion into the Premier league , our centre forward went on to sign for a top English team , we had another 2 who went to top English Championship teams , we had a player who went on to play for Scotland , another who would become a part of the Scotland set up after a successful playing career , another who is now a top manager after a successful playing career , there was no way I was going to break into that experienced team giving my footballing pedigree and in hindsight it was once again a crazy decision .

Meanwhile , my striking partner at the 21’s who had scored 38 goals that same season as I scored 65 signed for the worst professional team in Scotland at the time in the bottom of the second division.

The crucial difference was that he walked into the first team straight away and was able to build his confidence and put his talents on show to the rest of the professional game .

I struggled to make an Impact on my team and was freed at the end of the season along with most of the other youngsters to make way for more experienced players in the top flight and once again and at the age of 20 I was back on the scrap heap .

My old strike partner went on to sign for a Premier league team after 2 years in the bottom league .

He is a very well known guy in Scottish football having played with a few Premier league teams and won many honours , me …. Well , I’m somewhat less well known.

So for me , its crucial that you have a balanced view if you have options in the pro game and you make a decision based on the long term which may mean taking the route to glory from the bottom rung of the ladder .

And therein is the point of this story , if you have a talented kid then take good Interest in their football and give them valued parental guidance , even better, if you know someone who has played the game or been Involved at a professional level then ask their advice , it will almost always be sound advice .

Don’t think you have to jump in at the biggest team that comes along , It may not be a bad thing to let your kid start at a lower level than you would have liked , it can help them progress gradually and may lead to that top team eventually.

In my experience and in my opinion it is far better to have your kid playing a game of football that they are comfortable and within their own talent levels , this way they can be competitive and work on Improving their skills which may lead to better things .

Its got to be better than the route I took ?

And after all , how many young kids do you see coming all the way through the pro youth ranks and up to the top of the game and even onto International level ?

Very few percentage wise I would say .

Unless of course he just happens to be an Aiden McGeady !

Bad refereeing decisions?.Watch any league in the world and you will see shocking decisions every week. The self proclaimed “Best league in the world”being a prime example.Of course all the ones slaughtering the ref last night seemed not to want to mention the penalty.Getting like the Monkeys on here.

  23. Alfie just name them not interested in who coined the phrase. If you are accusing fellow fans and bloggers of being “Green Huns” then have the courage and decency to name them so they can have the right of reply. Either that retract the accusation. H H Hebcelt

  24. Been away from CQN for ages due to the squabbling and paucity of characters worth reading but great item Paul67 on the state and prospects for the EPL and SKY. Looking forward to SKY’S demise as I see them as destructive. Can’t believe how gullible we have been to pay them so much but still get constant adverts, pathetic “experts” and juvenile-level discussion.

I agree on the refs thing, got to let it go. Was debated on here a few weeks ago and long list of dodgy decisions (and clear benefits) I have seen in my lifetime got lost between Irish Rail WiFi and Vodafone.

I didn’t repost as it just winds people up but I don’t think Scottish refs have been biased for a long long time. I don’t think anyone did anything proactive in this area, just Scottish society moved on(education for all, equal opps at work etc)
