Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

  3. Burnley78. Let me draw you a simple analogy.

A football club with little or no discernible competition domestically, being fawned over becomes complacent and makes grave errors leading to their decline and demise.

Which football club am I talking about?

That’s the second time in 12 hours you’ve mentioned share price.

What on earth has it got to do with anything Celtic? Celtic is not a short or medium term investment. It’s not a meaningfully traded stock. Not even our Execs are bonused on share price anymore. It’s largely irrelevant to our business and has been for a decade.

On the toss side, being an unreconstructed Demingist, the relationship between Quality and Profit is fundamental. Everything you do that increases Quality, increases Profit.

The danger of course is that sometimes the things you do in the hope that they will increase Quality don’t actually work. That’s where good judgement comes in.

[Bear in mind that since Celtic does not distribute profit (dividend) there is no profit related value to the shares beyond cash calls to shareholders if things go pear shaped]

Last night I posted on RD as follows.

One thing RD will learn is not to make a rod for his own back by taking decisions that might go wrong in Norway but melt in the morning sun, but in Scotland petrify like a Troll in a Hobbit sunrise and remain forever in memory of his error.

He said “I don’t do loans.”

Now trotted out as a rod to beat him with.

Playing Begter via Legia. Big NO NO for me. “The trolls will get ye for that one Ronny”

Playing a weakened team v ICT. Only last week so give it time to harden.

It amuses me on the phone ins for a seemingly genuine point to disintegrate into “ten years ago he came up for a last minute corner ” as if that proves the callers point rather than his inability to forgive.

If it’s one thing we Celtic supporters do rather badly its forgiveness. It must be great to be perfect.

I was correctly corrected by Natknow as follows:

He said “I don’t do loans.”

Now trotted out as a rod to beat him with.

    ————————————————————

Not what he said. What he said was “Loan deals are a possibility but loans are not ideal. You don’t want to develop other clubs’ talent and not get money for it.”

Not the same as “I don;t do loans”. However, the lie has been repeated so often that it’s taken for a fact now – as you rightly say – by those who want to use it as a rod to beat him with.

    ———–

Which of RD’S statement on loans are you using as a rod of your convenience?

I’m not sold on RD yet but I’m going to give him a chance to put his ideas into action.

When you believe in something the only way to find out if it’s true is to follow it through and you learn from that experience. That means taking criticism on the way with the possibility your critics may be right but always being true to what you believe.

The experience will be the teacher though, not the critics.

Lesson 1. Stay away from the rod factory unless you think that what you want to do is really the right thing.

If you keep at “it” they’ll start frothing………..becomes really funny.

What is disappointing is the number who are jumping on the bandwagon.

Of course it’s a difficult time for The Faithful just now, but some perspective should be added to the mix by some.

After the draw in Slovenia the reaction was way over the top, that’s why some fell so far. Similarly prior to the ICT game Ronny was being praised as a visionary for the team selection. Jeez because we lost a game that changed !

I’m with you in your observation that the accounts don’t lie. Funny that those spouting about their exemplar business nous don’t reference the accounts.

  16. Thon wee wummin they used to wheel out when the old Rangers were on their journey to the mortuary used to tell it like it was, Patey’s take on insolvency law is much more palatable to the hordes.

I was responding to a non sense post by ffm from the wee hours.

Good to see someone who knows a lot more about that side of business reinforcing my point.

In fact it’s a pity it’s not a sticky and will get lost in a couple of hours.

  18. Keeping with the focus on our defence… I am certain Van dijk will be away… We’ll get close to 7.5 million…

Assessing what we have, we would have Lustig and Denayer as 2 right sided centre halfs.. In my opinion we would have Charlie mulgrew as a back up left sided centre half. And that’s it.

I purposely didn’t mention Ambrose here, because he is neither a centre half or right back and should be punted.

Personally, whether we play Lustig (if he can remain fit) or young Denayer… Then I feel we as a team would be better served without Van Dijk, but instead replace him with an older more experienced centre half.

My personal preference would be to follow a similar route to when we signed enrico annoni. Experienced Italian defenders are worth their weight in gold. Given the plight of Seria A, surely we could nab a good solid pro from a mid table Seria A outfit for 2 million squid.

    It’s the way forward.

  19. jackie mac- The problem is Mubarack may struggle a bit due to lack of match fitness and will immediately be labelled another dud by the malcontents.

Here’s a wee example of Peter Lawells logic for the head in the sand brigade to chew over.

Peter gives the argument that a 4 to 6 million pound player would demand 50 to 70k then in the same argument says Steven fletcher is on 37k and would cost over 7 million.

So a contradiction in one interview. What’s the truth?

  23. In health terms, Administration can be looked on as “Intensive Care”.

Every patient leaves Intensive Care at some time. But how?

Some recover and re-enter general society with varying recovery rates.

Sadly, RFC took the other path, down into the basement, the mortuary.

As part of this process, some organs which may be of use to others can be removed and transplanted to become part of another person.

Investigations may also be undertaken to identify the reasons behind the death.

Ultimately, what is left is finally consigned to the burial/crematorium detail, to be destroyed by fire or left to rot. (sorry, but that is what burial actually is).

RFC are currently still in the mortuary with BDO experts investigating the events which led to the demise of this once proud club.

As has happened on many an occasion, most particularly so with Elvis, other people may take on the guise of the recently demised.

These copycats are just that, copies. The original is gone and can never, ever be recreated.

But, the copycats can and often do, copy the same fate as the original.

Are we on the verge of seeing this now?

    We can but hope….
