Every game’s important for a squad looking to repair reputation

326

An away trip to St Johnstone on the back of an away trip to Fenerbahce was a challenging one on paper. Teams drop more points away from home after an away European game than under any other circumstances, but yesterday went as well as we could have hoped for.

Nadir Ciftci has failed to set imaginations alight since arriving in the summer but the support were delighted for the player and his prospects, after two excellently taken goals. The first, controlling a corner on his thigh before turning and thrashing the ball into the corner of the net, was top drawer. More please.

Our other summer signing who has recently pulled some form together is Dedryck Boyata. Dedryck was the proverbial bag of nerves earlier this season. He looked clumsy with the ball at his feet, was wasteful when passing and was part of a defence which could not defend corner kicks. The arrival of Jozo Simunovic in the team coincided with Dedryck looking more like a Celtic player.

Without European football the second half of the season has an anti-climactic feel to it but it’s important for both these players. They, like many others in the squad, have a lot to prove after some indifferent performances. Not all will make it. Several, who are teetering on the brink of the first team, will find their opportunities limited, so there is no such thing as an unimportant game. Every game is important when you are trying to improve your reputation, every corner is important as is every chance.

Some simple facts tell you why we have been crap in Europe for the last few seasons, continually selling our best players, who are replaced by vastly inferior ones. A project Manager in charge, who was lined up for the No 2 role, who is out of his depth, baffling team selections and substitutions, unable to manage a lead.Throw in comedy scouting, and it’s not too difficult to see how far we have downsized in a very short period.

Rate of downsizing, as it must, has accelerated in recent years. However, the downsizing itself began shortly after Seville. and love him or hate him, PL has been good at it.

  3. quonno-I’m sure PL is a competent accountant,it’s his controlling power of our football department, that I have issues with, you can include John Park in that as well. HH

A major problem at Celtic is an ongoing conflict of interests between football club and plc.

WDH: When I read your post at 6 40 pm ,I thought you had found a new source for DD’ s pastime!:) On yesterday’s game, are myself and two daughters the only ones who think SJ imagines he has a cloak of invisibility. Almost every time he goes into a tackle(and I use the word lightly),he pushes the opponent with either one hand or both and gives away a free kick.Does he not know that rule (not a foul) only applies to members of that deid team?

  9. Thought Boyatta was just a wee bit away from being immense yesterday.

Has he come in and been expected to do things as Denayer and Van Dijk did?

    Perhaps.

Thought he really looked like he was doing things his way yesterday…….nobody elses……and was maybe giving us a glimpse of who he is and what he is about rather than trying to simulate the previous incumbents style.

Big game from the big fella.

Who knows and time will tell but he may be about to make us forget those 2.

  10. Celtic Under Ronny remind me of Sevco Under Sally..Ok beating teams Below Them..But take on a team Rated better And Your Ass is Getting Kicked. ..Feel Free To Correct Me. Caveat..I Thought Hearts were Better last Year Than Sevco. ..I Did. .CQN Do Your Thing…

  11. Gooood evening fellow Bhoys & Ghirls

Just my opinion on where currently find ourselves.

Since joining us in June 2014, under Ronny, we have seriously deteriorated in European competition.

2014 Champions league attempts, his tactics lost us the games – does r did anyone see Legia Warsaw or Maribor as better than us in the games ? I didn’t, they played a better tactical game than us, and picked out the huge holes in our team Ronny’s structure leaves.

We done well to qualify through the Europa section, and were unlucky against Inter Mlan – again through this competition, I did no see a team we played whom I thought were an better than us,

This year, Chamions league, I didn’t think Malmo were any better than us, we should have eliminated them in the game at Celtic Park, yet again blew it in the away game ( VVD played in nth games) – tactically nieve.

We have had a disastrous Europa league competition, 3 points from a possible 18, managed decen draws away to both Ajax and Fenerbache, should have won all 3 home games, I will repeat, none of the 3 teams we played, in my view were any better than us, they all out played us tactically, picking on the same gaps and problems with our playing structure as previous

This year we have gotten much worse with ball retention, player movement of the ball, passing to our players etc – who is to blame for this ?

For me, Ronny tactics and poor decisions

Throughout, as we all talk of downsizing, our Football budget has hovered around £35-38 million pounds, absolutely no minnows in terms of football spend.

Again my view we are seeing a very poor return for this level of spend

We should be competing at Champions League level with this, and at a very minimum qualifying through a Europa league.

    I believe

The downsizing I see, is the poor scouting costing us a fortune in poor signings, on a squad too big for Scottish football, poor planning to allow us a decent chance in qualify for Champions league, who didn’t know VVD would be away ? Yet we await the last day of transfer window to sign players.

Our youth set up, is costing more to run than 50% of of the SPFL teams budgets, are we getting value for our money from this area ?

    Hail Hail

glad to see them beating Chelsea.

How long can Jose stay in his job?

I suspect that some big club will buy Vardey at the end of this season, for some ungodly amount of money (probably more than 40 million pounds)…. this for someone who is 28 years old, and, prior to joining Leicester, had played for fleetwood and Halifax, and since prior to this season, scored about 1 in 5 games.

I am not a fan of how the club is run at the moment, but, to be fair, it is hard to compete in a world of monopoly money like deals.
