Exploiting the poppy

977

Who made the poppy a political symbol?  For those who collected the flower from fields in France 90 years ago and many bereaved relatives at home it was a symbol of respect for loved ones lost, but it can be used politically and has been shamelessly politicised in Scotland in recent years, where the symbol of national loss has been exploited.

In itself, the poppy is not political, it occupies the same territory as the black armband, but even this worldwide symbol of respect has been exploited for political ends by footballers in the past.

I can understand why many in England are furious that Fifa consider the poppy a political symbol and have banned England for wearing it against Spain this week, but since a few live to exploit the flower for political ends, the Fifa decision is correct.

Before making the decision someone at Fifa would have undertaken cursory research into the subject.  Searching Google for “poppy football” a few weeks ago would have returned this (now archived) result.  I’m sure you recall; a banner at Celtic Park, which didn’t make the news on the day it was displayed, or on the next day, was badgered by someone into the news on day three.  Celtic were the target of that exercise, the England team are now collateral damage.

Transparency and accountability at the SFA? There’s already been a few issues this season with officals and the disciplinary procedures. Then we get the Steven Craven decision. I would be interested what grounds he made his appeal and on what grounds it was refused.

In addition, what criteria was used to give naismith a 2 match ban for violent conduct after not being sent off, then the same committee increasing Kris Commons ban to the same 2 matches for a bad tackle which was also punished with a red card at the time.

Violent Conduct = 2 match ban for huns player

Bad Tackle = 3 match punishment for Celtic player

Bad tackle (as bad if not worse than KC’s) = yellow card for huns player

I was (and still am) all for giving the SFA a chance to demonstrate their transparency and accountability and delivery of punishments equally, when do they plan to start?

    A couple of answers.

Naismith’s ban was trial by video I do believe (the new lawyer from opus dei adjudicated I think)…..Kris Commons was banned for 2 games because Thomson the referee reported the tackle as violent conduct.

Ole Johnny Clash -maybe you should ask Willie McStay.

The current u 19 team have 5 or 6 players who COULD make it.

They need a reserve team to play in where they can play with older players. We need a reserve league. U understand the SFA are considering this. Otherwise loan these players out to Championship or Div I teams in England.

Anyone remember Charlie Grant? Grant announced his retirement from football at the age of 24 in April 2011 following the expiry of an unsuccessful short-term contract with East Stirlingshire.

Charlie Grant was an excellent prospect. Unfortunately he suffered a couple of very serious injuries that kept him out of the game for 2-3 years. When he recovered he signed for Dundee I think but injuries returned and he was never able to recover his early promise.

If whistleblower Steven Craven is banned from blowing his referee’s whistle again it will be a sad indictment of the closed shop vindictiveness that can still be found in areas of west of Scotland life.

Steven Craven told the truth, it is an alien concept to referees, with the additional x factor of a game involving Glasgow Celtic, then you can see why Steven Craven will never receive justice in his local referee association or by the SFA

Good points, well made. There is a line of thought which suggests that Scots are not as far along the evolutionary road as Engerland and why racism is not a problem in Scotland as Scots have not got past the anti Catholic thing yet.

In Engerland being a mason is more of a class thing but in Scotland so long as you hate Catholics, then you probably will be able to join up and allowed to shag a goat, wear a silly apron and have a trouser leg rolled and providing the hand-shake passes muster, get any job you want!!!!!!!

It’s a tough life no doubt, made tougher on the fact that there is no reserve league in Scotland. Once you are no longer eligible for U19s unless you are ready to make the step up to the 1st team pretty quickly (like James Forrest) you are pretty much resigned to being let go completely or sent out on loan and I can’t even remember the last player to make a serious impact for us when returning from a loan period.

We really need to have a team in the lower leagues in Scotland or alternatively buy Dundee and use them as a feeder club.

Players develop at different ages and the system in place now just isn’t conjusive to helping them make the step up.

  17. Wee story about the men with the money.

I worked for an architects company that did a lot of work at Paradise and Desmond had

the final say on everything. This is fair enough as he is/was technically the client.

However, he was not an easy man to work for and he had no time for the little man.

I remember one Friday morning that Desmond phoned and told the architect in charge to jump

on a plane to Dublin with the latest set of plans/elevations etc.. for the new facade.

When told by the poor guy that he was going out for his wife’s birthday and couldn’t go,

Desmond responded, “your flight tickets are booked and you fly at 13:00, be on it.”

After arriving in Dublin and waiting till 6.30pm he gets a call to say that Desmond

can’t make the meeting as he was going straight to dinner after his round of golf.

Now you can say that the architect should have told him to b*gger off and not go to

Dublin but the implied threat was there and the company could not afford to lose a

    major/prestigious client.

However, when it comes to crooked, corrupt, dangerous men in football, i give you

    George Reynolds of Darlington FC.

We were the architects for a new £20 million stadium and the man was a horror.

He wanted to call the stadium after himself – no ego there – and install, amongst

other things, gold plated taps and marble toilets. He refused to use the tender process

    – required in law – and used his own companies and friends.

There were 2 main architects in that project and they used to fight to see who did

NOT have to go down to meetings with the man.

I’ve added a link below for your amusement as the man deserves a book or film about him.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4363620.stm

ps. He once took to the pitch in a mock prison suit complete with arrows, with a ball and

    chain around his ankle.

  18. This whole poppy thing is actually very sad.

When I was at primary school (kafflick, FYI:)) we were all taught that the poppy was a symbol of peace.

Freshly germinating poppies were the only signs of life in the charnel fields of WW1.

It was a symbol of ‘never again’.

It was originally proposed and publicised by committed peace campaigners, IIRC.

Now, as another poster noted, it has become an updated version of the Tebbitt cricket test.

To see the arrogant little/Middle Englander Cameron show his bare-faced and chested inflated sense of entitlement is very telling. Not only has it been appropriated as a symbol of ‘righteous warmongering’, for want of a better term, it has offered our Prime Minister the chance to showcase the full limit of his gifts. He is really a very limited politician. In attempting to play to the gallery at PMQs he has actually shown himself up for the narrow-minded buffoon he is beneath the smarmy-smiling surface. Read this quote:

“I think [the questioner] not only speaks for the whole House, but in fact the whole country, [in] being completely baffled and frankly angry [at] the decision made by Fifa….I think this is an appalling decision and I hope they’ll reconsider it.”

The post-war settlement in Europe is coming apart at the seams, before our eyes on a daily basis.

And we have this clown in charge.
