Final deck clearing for deadline day

1075

The day has arrived, 31 August, on a Champions League season, but news has been slow (in general) or there has been no news (at Celtic) so far.  Pity help those who were not busy this morning and have burned through a packed of antacids.  Deadline day reveals human nature in all its glory.

Last night Ipswich Town agreed a deal to take Daryl Murphy, whom they had on loan last season and the final six months of the previous season.  Daryl would have been keen to bring his Celtic uncertainty to an end (he is out of contract when this loan period at Ipswich expires) as he has clearly enjoyed more success in the English Championship.

We didn’t see the best of Daryl but it’s good news Celtic were prepared to release him.  He would surely have been retained if there was not a good chance of recruiting a replacement.  No promises, of course!

Stay tuned throughout the day.  If we have another ‘Robbie Keane Day’ when the CQN server takes a battering I’ll update the Facebook page and Twitter.

He’s coming up on the 28th Sept, you’re welcome to join him if your swing is up to it.

  3. Loanee striker doesn’t make sense. If we’re not building for the future or bringing in experience to help improve the youngsters there’s no point and we’re not following a plan.

  6. Just to remind the usual board bashers who never seem to actually enjoy being a Celtic supporter.

It’s believed that Celtic have already applied to the Department of Work and Pensions for a work permit with Ambrose expected to be included in the squad to visit St Johnstone on September 15 before the Champions League opener against Benfica four days later.

Ambrose has been virtually an ever present with FC Ashdod over the last two seasons while breaking into the full Nigerian international side having previously been capped at all levels and taking part in the 2008 Olympic Games.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to clubs in Holland and Belgium, he also had a trial with Manchester City in January, but the lure of playing for Celtic in the Champions League has added to the attraction of a move to Scotland.

There are loads of different business models that can be and are used in football.

From Arsenal’s cash positive model, to Udinese’s player development, to the ‘Sugar Sheikh’ nonsense of Man City and PSG and the hanging on the coat tails approach of Wigan and so many other mediocre clubs across Europe.

Celtic’s model is a blend of the Arsenal approach and Udinese’s, ensuring that the club breaks even over the cycle (3 years) with the fall back of player development to fill the odd financial hole along the way.

I got to thinking what this current team will be like when it grows up, but the reality is that it never will. We will have this season and next before the current young stars are sold on and replaced with something kinda similar.

Celtic’s first team will thus have an average age under 24 for the forseeable future.

However you chose to interpret Peter Lawwell’s views, the realty is that Celtic’s approach funds more in costs each year than is delivered by revenue from Europa League and domestic football combined, and that means player sales are an essential part of balancing the books when we go through a period of exclusion from the Champions League.

Nothing you dodn’t know already, of course.

Celtic: the new king of Scotland

Although they have 11 fewer league titles than their eternal rivals Rangers, these are happy days for the green and white half of Scotland’s biggest city. For economic reasons, their protestant rivals have been forced to disband and are now starting all over again in the Scottish Third Division. With Rangers out of the way for at least the next three years, Celtic look set to dominate the domestic championship like never before, which means manager Neil Lennon will be able to focus almost his entire attention on his club’s European campaign. Applying their typically physical but direct approach, their strengths include Wanyama in midfield and Greek international Samaras up front.

Au contraire I do see the SFA as the enemy and they should certainly be in our sights. However, I think it would be more prudent to select our battles when the issues directly relate to the club otherwise we appear like the bhoy who cried wolf.

I’m starting to worry about the amount of time you spend seeking the approbation of certain posters on here-I mentioned it just the other night to another poster-you can check it back,I know he wouldn’t want his name in the same post as yours.

I would prefer that you used the words “official statements on financial policy” rather than the word views and I interpret it as bare faced lying that disguises poor bang for buck and therefore employee performance and also ensures golden bonuses every year.
