Finding a keeper should be the easy part of the week

449

I think we all got that sinking feeling when we heard it was a knee injury, which kept Craig Gordon from appearing in the second half on Saturday. So news today that the player hopes to be back this season is a great relief. It still, however, mean we need to make moves to secure a replacement.

Dorus de Vries did well on Saturday, in particular with his distribution from feet, but we cannot play have a season with only a 37-year-old keeper. This will be causing some stress at Celtic Park right now but it should not be too difficult a position to fill. Fraser Forster was fifth choice at Newcastle when we loaned him.

There are plenty of clubs with three or more good keepers. My preference would be to get someone with the profile of Fraser; someone we could mould with an eye on a future permanent move, but I suspect this is likely to be a risk-averse appointment and we’ll get someone the manager is confident can do the job.

Resisting the temptation to talk about Charly for now. There’s lots to say on the subject, but let’s wait for things to formalize.

  1. I find myself agreeing with both Bass Bhoy and Neganon’s suggestions and posts and keen to see a wee synthesis of the two.

I doubt he has that many issues with BR but I get his “misgivings’ re the Plc board, this emanates from the “quality of the chairman”.

  3. I made a verbal offer to win the Euro millions tomorrow night, I’m just waiting to hear back.

EXCLUSIVE: Rangers star Alfredo Morelos could be set for mega-money move to China

RANGERS hitman Alfredo Morelos could be set for a £6million-plus move to China.

    From a Universe , far,far away…..file under £7mil for Barrie McKay….

  5. BASS BHOY @ 10:53 PM,

Got to agree with all of that, well said.

Brendan said he wanted quality in. I believe he’s done just that.

    Hail Hail

  6. What is the Stars on

Lawwell Musonda realised that Morelos was for sale

Could have got him for 6 million. (3 now 3 later)

    Better than loan deals

  7. Zombie hoardes being played IMO, Murty said new players coming in, obvs BS. Now scare them with Morelos is leaving story and when he stays they will forget all about the players that never arrived. The SMSM will also splash it across the back pages tomorrow to deflect from our Charly.

  8. And another thing……

The suggestion that Brendan’s signing policy has resulted in few first team starters – maybe the team Brendan inherited was pretty good (or at least had the potential to be pretty good) and the only way that he was going to be able to buy guaranteed first team starters was to be able to spent tens of millions on each player.

  9. Well excited with the Charly signing

Does anyone know what the situation with the holy goalie is, heard his name on snyde tonight when I was flicking the channels?

Think he would be worth considering!

  10. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Thte verbal offer rom China was written (!) in Chinese and is not worth the parchment it wasn’t written on.

    Mon the Sunderland.

  12. A big country is China. Coincidence that the team bidding verbally for Morales is Guangzhou – the city is a sprawling port city northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River.

    Hong Kong? King Kong….

A Chinese offer you say! A large portion of Chicken chop suey and a bag of prawn crackers for Morelos. Done!!!

Either way it is a gamble. For every Van Dijk and Wanyama

*the last one really irritates me, there are some on here, and other sites, that still salivate over him, 15 months after we signed him to a 4 year deal, and don’t forget he only got in the side due tae a thuggish attack an Beram Kayal, his agent released a statement that he had turned down improved terms and wanted to go down south as we couldnae meet his salary demands. 9 months later, after about 2 years with us he signed for Southampton, so much for the Kenyan Fenian and his number 67 jersey.

  16. Well done Celtic in managing to bringing Charly to Paradise.

All real Celtic fans will be delighted.

As for the rest. No idea what will make them happy.

A wee anecdote about Dr. Kivlichan ( see Tontine Tim’s post earlier ) .

When I started school in August 1943 my Dad told me that the headmaster , Mr. Daniel Scullion , was the brother in law , of Dr. Kivlichan one of the very few players to have played for Celtic and Rangers. I think he also said he had played for QOS but I am not sure and can’t be bothered to check the fount of all wisdom’s post of earlier.

*He did, it seems that he was very intelligent, especially at Maths, Latin and English, so when he was fourteen, his da wanting him to be a priest, sent him up to Blairs.

It turned out that didnae have the vocation so after 2 terms he came home. His da was upset and very angry and refused to give him any further financial help with his education, however he was a good fitba player and signed for his local side Queen of the South, after a season there he made enough money went back to school at Dumfries Academy.

BTW his grandson of the same name is a doctor over here in Brampton.

  18. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

Now we enter the real business part of the transfer window. Do I believe Celtic was Charley’s first choice at the start of the window? No.

Do I believe we became his best option towards the end? Yes.

I’m cock a Hoop we have this lad. Well done Celtic. This is a player who can improve us.

I suspect a couple more in the next day or so.

Any team can fill jerseys with loan deals for Championship rejects. Getting an emerging talent from a top EPL team requires contacts, lure and finance.

  21. What is the Stars on

    Neg

    I asked you a question at 10.54

I would like an answer if possible.

After all its stupidly simple I’m sure.

It related to what percentage of our turnover should be invested in the football staff.

Also this Benfica model, how would that work for Celtic ?

Maybe you posted an answer already but I Musonda seen it

  22. Welcome to Celtic Charly!

Can’t see the negatives here. We get a – hopefully- quality player for a reported 10k a week with parent club paying the remainder of wages. A small fee ( and it is small) in today’s market to get it over the line.

If PL phoned Chelsea with a view to buy he would have been quoted circa £20 M and we would have had to, as a minimum, match his wages. How much total cost? Huge. Dressing room unrest apart. When certain posters say Celtic must up their game then they have to factor in those already at Celtic and adjust their NETTO also.

You then have to consider the player.

Become a first team player at Chelsea then you can expect £150- £200k per week. Celtic -£20k perhaps. Does well at Celtic at the end of the deal he might get in Chelsea 1st team.

That’s why it’s a loan deal. Makes sense for both clubs and player.

To be frank I ain’t happy at where we find ourselves in European football, but am realistic about it.

  23. BASS BHOY on 29TH JANUARY 2018 10:53 PM

I’m a very occasional poster but a regular reader. My infrequent posting is mainly down to the fact that the guys who post on here on a regular basis seem to have it covered and I was unsure that I had anything to add. I’m a little perturbed, however, by the number of people on here tonight who seem disgruntled about the Mosonda deal. There seems to be a feeling that this deal is somehow at odds with a long-term building of a team. I would suggest:

1 An 18 month deal is a substantial amount of time, and, for a young player with enormous potential, is not far off what you would expect to keep him for even if you had bought him.

2 We might be cash rich but we’re not that cash rich. This guy would cost stupid EPL money and I would rather see him in the Hoops than see him playing for Chelsea.

3 Having this guy around is only going to help the rest of the team – that’s a long-term thing.

4 Is it as straightforward as having a moderate amount of funds to spend to go out and bring top quality players on a permanent basis to the Scottish game? Realistically the better players are going to be projects, at the tail end of their careers or loans. We are doing all of that. It’s a big picture.

    Welcome Charly

    ……………………

Well said! You need to spend more time posting on the blog.

  24. I think a team of Celtics quality, cash, history and current record breaking form should venture into the EL 2003 style no problem. However, the PLC business plan is OF and they know thats what most of you chumps only care about. Cha Ching! Buck Rodgers of the 21st century from the planet Zenit and beyond!!!

  25. Its state of the onion tomorrow.

Mark my words. If Rosenstein is fired within the next 2-3 weeks its the end of the world as we know it. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead.

  26. Quote from Brendan Rodgers. An approximation.

“We want to recruit quality players that will improve us.”

I & very few of us have seen Charly play, but Brendan has, he plays for Chelsea & he’s a Belgian international.

His 18 mth contract is good on many levels but mostly that the player is at Celtic for positive reasons.

He’s liable to be MOTM tomorrow now.

Good luck Chas. Knock em bandy.

Just watch yet ankles up here.
