Finding a keeper should be the easy part of the week

449

I think we all got that sinking feeling when we heard it was a knee injury, which kept Craig Gordon from appearing in the second half on Saturday. So news today that the player hopes to be back this season is a great relief. It still, however, mean we need to make moves to secure a replacement.

Dorus de Vries did well on Saturday, in particular with his distribution from feet, but we cannot play have a season with only a 37-year-old keeper. This will be causing some stress at Celtic Park right now but it should not be too difficult a position to fill. Fraser Forster was fifth choice at Newcastle when we loaned him.

There are plenty of clubs with three or more good keepers. My preference would be to get someone with the profile of Fraser; someone we could mould with an eye on a future permanent move, but I suspect this is likely to be a risk-averse appointment and we’ll get someone the manager is confident can do the job.

Resisting the temptation to talk about Charly for now. There’s lots to say on the subject, but let’s wait for things to formalize.

  1. Yes I hope so ghordybhoy but we get so much nonsense quoted at us by this site who knows.

I know we have got to duck and dive but we have had so little investment again I gotta wonder at hat the hell is going on at CP.

As for guys like burnley67 they would have Celtic on ever decreasing circles with Ronny delia (I don’t blame Ronny for the record) because Celtic will only ever do the absolut minimum.

Fascinatingly I wonder without the angst how low the board would take us……..

  2. Interesting, end of last week… we are not going to sign any decent players, the Board are going to keep it going to the end of the transfer window then say we’ve tried but January’s a difficult window and we couldn’t sign anyone.

We’ll not strengthen the team and the money for the team will be spent of things like a Hotel.

Today… Celtic Board are throwing money away on expensive deals for players…

  4. God bless Charly, I’ve not felt so excited about a signing in a while. Hope he makes it for himself and us.

A wee anecdote about Dr. Kivlichan ( see Tontine Tim’s post earlier ) .

When I started school in August 1943 my Dad told me that the headmaster , Mr. Daniel Scullion , was the brother in law , of Dr. Kivlichan one of the very few players to have played for Celtic and Rangers. I think he also said he had played for QOS but I am not sure and can’t be bothered to check the fount of all wisdom’s post of earlier.

BTW, the school was called Ardrossan Central R.C. School none of your saints shit allowed in Ardrossan :) and was a second hand school the other mob having moved to a brand new one!

G64- I think the market has changed a lot in the last 2 seasons, there is so much more money in other leagues. We need to scout guys under the radar, to do this you need honest clubs and agents to deal with, most leak an interest to create a bidding war, which we can’t win.The only way i like loan deals, if we have an agreed price to buy.Who knows, Man C might sell us Paddy……HH

I refuse to give up. I absolutely refuse to let cheating and complacency win. Screw you and your approach.

WITS this is dead easy. So we up the investment to where we are genuinely ambitious and follow a benfica model. Instead of only seeing the downside to the stupidity of the English Premiership see the upside. Buy bigger and sell bigger.

It’s so stupidly simple it makes my head spin.

  18. The smart money says Charly will be on the bench tomorrow and Brendan will wait until the game settles down and opens up before introducing him to the Scottish game. However, should Brendan play him from the start, it will be instructive as to just how highly he rates him. I reckon it’s 50/50 and I’m just leaning towards starting him.

  19. Hi Bhoys

I can only see the positives in this deal. We canny afford to buy players of this quality. So tell me another way to get them except for a loan deal and quite a long one at that.

We have him for 18 month at maybe £10k a week. If he’s half as good as I hope he can secure a second treble (never been done before), help us to the champions league group stages again and set us up for our 8th title in a row as well as champions league qualifers for 2019.

All of this IF things go well with very little out lay of cash leaving us even more cash rich with the opportunity of making better permanent signings for our push for 9 and 10 in a row. That’s the big target.

I don’t really know the boards ideas on this type of thinking but if it’s even close to this I’ll be very happy if not then I’ll just keep supporting THE FAMOUS GLASGOW CELTIC.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  20. I’m a very occasional poster but a regular reader. My infrequent posting is mainly down to the fact that the guys who post on here on a regular basis seem to have it covered and I was unsure that I had anything to add. I’m a little perturbed, however, by the number of people on here tonight who seem disgruntled about the Mosonda deal. There seems to be a feeling that this deal is somehow at odds with a long-term building of a team. I would suggest:

1 An 18 month deal is a substantial amount of time, and, for a young player with enormous potential, is not far off what you would expect to keep him for even if you had bought him.

2 We might be cash rich but we’re not that cash rich. This guy would cost stupid EPL money and I would rather see him in the Hoops than see him playing for Chelsea.

3 Having this guy around is only going to help the rest of the team – that’s a long-term thing.

4 Is it as straightforward as having a moderate amount of funds to spend to go out and bring top quality players on a permanent basis to the Scottish game? Realistically the better players are going to be projects, at the tail end of their careers or loans. We are doing all of that. It’s a big picture.

    Welcome Charly

  26. EXCLUSIVE: Rangers star Alfredo Morelos could be set for mega-money move to China

RANGERS hitman Alfredo Morelos could be set for a £6million-plus move to China.

A verbal offer has been made for the club’s top scorer from a Chinese Super League club, believed to be Guangzhou.

The Light Blues are already looking at potential replacements should a deal be struck before the close of the transfer window tomorrow.

The 21-year-old Colombian has made a real impact since his summer move from HJK Helsinki.

Morelos has scored 13 goals and only last week spoke of his ambition to win a move to the English Premier League next season. HJK Helsinki would be due a sell-on fee if his transfer goes through, with Morelos having been signed by former Gers manager Pedro Caixinha for £1.5million.

Boss Graeme Murty said at the weekend that Morelos would only go if they were offered a barrowload of cash – that could now happen.

  27. If big Moussa cant get his stuff together now that we’ve signed Charly then i don’t know. The thought of Paddy, Sinky and Charly laying on chance after chance with Oli pulling the strings from behind has me salivating. Now if big Moussa CAN get his stuff together, then what a forward line that is.

  28. Loving being a Celtic supporter right now.

Never been a time like it. 13 leagues from past 18. Despite the sporting disadvantage.

Set up for long term domination beyond this.

7 times in Europe after xmas in past 15 seasons. As many as we had in total during and before Jock’s era.

Despite incredible disadvantage commercially Celtic has beaten Milan, Barca, Man U, Benfica, Spartak, Porto, Juventus and many others in that time.

Still some would rather wallow in their misery and pine for those bygone days of being shafted by the Whites and Kelly’s standing in the jungle …..now that really was daft….

NIGHT BHOYS IT WILL BE A SWEET DREAM TONIGHT

    KEEP THE FAITH

  30. The top teams everywhere have great talents like Musonda languishing in their reserves.

Chelsea signed Charly as a 15 year old (in a job lot with his 2 brothers) for a compensation fee. Paddy Roberts cost Man City £13m when they bought him on a long term deal. No way would we get Paddy unless we bid near that price or he proved to be a dud.

There are a couple of ways that loan deals can be a success and a couple of ways they can be failures.

First, they can be a success in letting you sample rich wares before you buy. You can take a player on loan and you find he is not a lot better than what you have and/or his price is too steep, so you can benefit by cutting your losses and returning him to his parent club. If you’d bought him , you’ld be owning an expensive dud and you’ld have to take the bath on selling him.

They can also be a success where you have a loan with a set fee to buy. Boruc was such a situation and we got a bargain. Odsonne Edouard is a more expensive example- if he has a Dembele type season, we could be taking a safe gamble in paying a recod fee for a young French u-21 talent who is likely to fetch a double digit transfer fee in this over-heated market. If he has a so-so season or off-field problems emerge, he can be quietly transferred back to PSG with little harm done.

They can also be a success when the parent club sees them perform well at Celtic but still do not rate them. Newcastle made that mistake with Forster as they thought they did not need him and still sold him to us cheaply, even after he had had some great games with us. We benefited from some EPL arrogance there.

Of course, loan deals can be failures, if the player is an expensive dud. Charly will cost us a lot during his loan spell but he is likely to have the talent to pay back his fee in helping us do better next year in Europe. We could hope that the Chelsea manager might see this and have the same reaction as the Newcastle manager had with Forster, but I accept that is wishful more than realistic.

He could also get crocked and spend the whole of his expensive loan period in the treatment room or bench. But that happens too with transfer signings. Boerigter spent 3 years out of our team on full wages. If the same thing happens with Charly, our losses will last half as long.

So we either decide to compete for that talent languishing in the reserves at Chelsea, City, United, Real etc; or we go for the next lower level of player- the ones they overlooked in order to have the privilege of owning them.

Either way it is a gamble. For every Van Dijk and Wanyama, there is a Bangura and a Pukki. For every Forster and Roberts there is a Brozek or a Braafheid.
