Fixture symmetry, transfer speculation caution

215

A quick check of the fixture list reveals that St Mirren are the first scheduled visitors to Celtic Park after 10 August, the date Clinical Director, Jason Leitch, said he hopes to allow capacity crowds into football stadiums.  St Mirren were the last visitors to play in front of supporters at Celtic Park, on 7 March 2020, which will be satisfying, for those who like their fixtures with a bit of symmetry.

Olivier Ntcham’s hopes to earn a rewarding contract appear to hinge on Celtic providing the player with a free transfer, one year before the end of his current agreement.  Deals like this were once regarded as rewards for players who gave the bulk of their career to a club.  Subsidising Olivier’s potential wages from AEK would be an extraordinarily generous move by Celtic.

The player really needs some football next season, if not, he will be 26 when his contract expires, having played very little football for two years.  I would rather pay him to remain the squad (with strict instructions to stay out of the Celtic penalty box) than lose him for free.

It’s great to see reports of talented young players on their way to Celtic, but we all know the script when it comes to transfers.  Confirmative press stories mean nothing, just ask Celtic boss, Eddie Howe.  If a player is on Celtic’s radar, he will be on a few others.

Speaking of Howe, his phone will have gone a bit quiet since four weeks ago.  He rejected Celtic within a day of Real Madrid sounding out their new boss, Carlo Ancelotti, then manager of his boyhood club, Everton.  Everton and Crystal Palace are both trying hard to appoint a manager who is not Howe, although he remains on both clubs’ lists.  Southampton and Newcastle retained their managers, against earlier expectations.

Shay Logan, weeks after posting the message, “You can’t polish a turd” below a photo of Scott Brown in an Aberdeen shirt, was arrested and charged with an offence under the Proceeds of Crime Act.  He remains as classy as ever.

  1. FITBA Innovations…

My auld Granda that brought me up used to ask me now and then……

” Wee Jimmy son, how did Fitba teams manage to play Fitba in those DARK Winter Nights BEFORE Floodlights were invented” ?

ME…” I dunno Granda, how did they play games in those dark winter nights BEFORE Floodlights were invented” ?

Granda…” Easy wee Jimmy….they just played the 2nd HAWF FIRST” !

    LOL.

Granda Bobby R.I.P….I still miss his patter.

  2. Sorry Paul but I think you’re miles off re Ntcham.

If Ntcham, Edouard, Ajer or Christie are in our 1st team squad for even 1 game this season, then they will stink the place out like last season and we’ll be looking at a crisis by September.

Selling these guys now is maybe even more important than anything else.

The 70% effort they put in spreads like wildfire in a dressing room.

Having ON especially back at CP would be as big a mistake as not signing a new/real goalkeeper.

  3. The number of our players with contracts expiring at the end of next season seems very high. Hopefully we’ll be more aware of this if we’re issuing new contracts to a group of players in the future.

As for AEK Athens, they’re simply at it. If they want Ntcham, I’d imagine we’d be very open to a deal. They’re taking the piss.

I imagine Celtic have money still to pay on Barkas and think it likely we have suggested using Ntcham as an instalment.

Realising the Marseille developments, AEK have likely helpfully offered to “take him off our hands.”

I think both are at it.

I doubt Ange would tolerate non triers they might get away with it once but not for long

Youngsters should only get the chance if they’re ready, gently introduce them perhaps I’m games we’re comfortable in, though based on previous when is that likely to be.

I think Jack Hendry must have been influenced in some way by the way he was regarded by fans especially on social media. Given that this season was his highest number of games and his return to the Scotland squad I think we may come to regret this episode at some point in the near future.

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

Mursheen- agree,we’re not in a position to let guys go just now, but seemingly AP has told Dom,to get rid of anyone who doesn’t want to be here, and I agree with him.

  8. Je suis

You’re right that a lot of fans weren’t impressed with Hendry. To be honest he wasn’t great with Scotland against the Czechs.

    Time will tell.

Hendry may become a player. He won’t do so at Celtic, if Oostende polish him up then good luck to them and him.

Too much water under the bridge.

  10. Bada

It depends on why they want to leave – if it’s getting played out of position or being overlooked then I can understand giving them another chance.

The “I’m too good for Celtic or the SPFL” crew can go.

  11. Hendry is not the type of defender we need – most of his plaudits for Scotland came from a goal he scored from 20yards out . He is not aggressive enough as a defender and is usually caught ball watching.

I like when Ange said ” its all just words at the moment” – his success is TOTALLY dependent on the boards willingness to get deals done quickly.

We have been shockingly negligent in this area of business for years – especially for critical spine positions. Let see if we can sign those imminents this week!! if not, its going to be a long hard season.

What makes it so much more unbelievable is Scotland’s population density is 65 people per sq kilometre – England has 280 people per sq kilometre.

She can’t be any worse than Lee Dixon. He was murder last night. Didn’t even know the rules when talking about playing on advantage.

  25. We are right to insist on a fee for Ntcham. He is a decent player and properly motivated is an asset. Lenny intimated that all the French speakers were continuing want aways so I say get rid of all them and the poison. Bayo and Shved as well, Hold on to Turnball and If we keep Griffiths make sure Griff and Rogic get fit

Dont play any of the want aways with one exception. Kris Ajer never let the fact he wanted away affect his performance. He was a proper professional and bust a gut last season for Celtic.

Introduce the youth Connell, O’ Conner, Hjelde, Montgomery, Henderson, Afolabi, Dembele. Just not all at once

Bring in the best of Scottish. Ferguson, Nisbet, Doig

Sign a few European experienced players and make them work hard to blend with what we have.
