Focus shifts to Pittodrie

Tonight Aberdeen play the second of a run of three consecutive away games. After overcoming St Johnstone 3-4 in Perth a week ago they are on the road to face Inverness. The Highlanders have not lost in a month, and haven’t lost at home since the visit of Celtic in November, so John Hughes men will provide a stern test for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen are back on the road to Firhill on Friday night. Their season has been free of fixture congestion. This is a rare week with two games, and an even rarer one with two away games. It could be a pivotal period in the campaign.

Celtic won comfortably in the end against Ross County but confidence seemed at a low ebb until Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring. Sentiment may have swung in our favour before we take to the field at home to Inverness on Saturday.

“Yes…it is a reasonable expectation for us to be leading comfortably”

When and why did this become a reasonable expectation?

I stated that I never had any expectation over how much we should or would “romp” it. I expected to win it and, frankly, don’t care whether it’s by 1 point or by 20 points. It still counts as a win. The titles we have won by smaller margins have, in fact, probably produced the most riotous celebrations and the foregone conclusion leagues greeted with little more than a shrug by some.

So, that is why I asked the specific question I asked. Why is this pressure only placed on Ronny? MON was not expected to wrap the league up by any pre-set date, WGS was subjected to a bit more of that but that was down to other factors. Only Ronny, uniquely, out of all our managers is expected to romp a league and win it early and be considered a failure if he does not.

And the only factor that is different for him, which subsumes your greater resources than all the rest argument, is the absence of an Ibrox club.

Ronny got, rightly, criticised for failure to BEAT smaller teams in the CL and Europa League comps. He is beating the smaller teams in the league but he is getting criticised for it.

Damned if he doesn’t and damned if he does- what margin of league victory is enough? Last year’s race was close for awhile but we took off right about now and led by 17 at the end. Would 15 be acceptable in May? 12? 8? 3 or less?

I am gonna enjoy the win regardless because we have lost too many to become sniffy abut it being beneath us now as only Europe matters.

I think you’re deluded if you think the mibs don’t have it in for Celtic. You need only look back to the Shame Game and look at the punishments administered to the 3 Rangers players who were red carded to know that they have an agenda against Celtic. Then we Dougie, Dougiegate and Dallas inviting referees to alter their reports after games. Historically and currently they will do what they can when the opportunity presents itself to try to harm Celtic.

It doesnt matter if we win it by 1 point or 20…agreed.

However…As i said, with our advantages, financial and in terms of player quality…we are streets ahead.

We should be seeing that on the park.

There is no doubt in my mind that we are superior in terms of football, and i have never had a moments doubt about who will win the league this year…Celtic.

However….its not good, when we have to rely on ICT to do us a turn…no matter how welcome.

    Thats not good.

We should be better than that.

Seriously I agree with every word you are saying about the expectations placed on Tonny in mid February. Totally unnecessary and unrealistic. It’s where we are in at that counts. My own feeling is that we will win it by 10 points but I will be very happy if we just win it narrowly and as you point out I will probably celebrate more wildly if it is a close run thing and we prevail.

Collum’s a Catholic. Maybe he went native. Perhaps something upset him and he thought, “Feck it” ……. or perhaps……….. he’s a totally incompetent referee.

  12. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Lot of lunacy among Cqn happy clappers tonight. Tonight’s performance does not in any way represent a revision on Ronny’s performance or indeed the team so far this season.

I fancied a draw tonight so delighted with ICT who deserved their win. Collum had a shocker but AFC were terrible.

We need to be careful on Saturday. ICT will be buoyed by tonight’s result. We need to get going early and then batter them with pressure…

I dealt with much of this in my reply to The Green Man and as it is past my bedtime…. I will be fairly brief

“Considering where expectations were set at the beginning of the season, I’d expect us not to be in a dogfight at this stage. Start of season the talk amongst the great and good (not I, I hasten to add) of 10 in a row. Of European tests. We failed badly in Europe, and given our resource disparity? I’d fully expect us to be more than in control – especially given Europe is not a distraction.”

How much more in control than 3 points clear with a game in hand? What would have been acceptable? How much were we ahead at this stage last year when we ended up 17 points clear? I think it is reasonable to ask. Aberdeen have had two great runs- 8 wins in a row and now, up to tonight, 13 unbeaten. That is a great effort from them but we are still gonna beat them.

“In truth? From a historical standpoint, I just don’t know. But the years before Ronny have saw us comfortably ahead of the pack (discounting Rangers).

Again, given the resource advantage we have, I absolutely think it’s a fair expectation.”

Well, there’s my point about referencing Sevco’s absence, that TGM criticises me for. Aberdeen are no longer “the pack” they are 11 clear of the 3rd placed team who are, in turn 11 clear of the genuine pack. They are our rivals and are making a good but not a good enough fist of it. Every SPFL Premiership team has only one big team to aim at whereas they used to have 2. They each now have their league version of a Cup Final 3 or 4 times a season rather than the 6 or 8 times they had previously. Aberdeen deserve the slot as main rivals, they have earned it. They are not as scary as the EBT bloated deid team but they are still the best we face and I respect them (but do not fear them) by rejoicing in their misfortune tonight. And I think it is a reasonable expectation that my fellow Celts enjoy that too and do not sneer at it as a meaningless expectation. Did we not use to decry the ibrox fan of the 89 to 97 era for feeling that the SPL was beneath them and only Europe mattered?

“Likewise. I laughed at the score. :) But I was dreading it beforehand. Now of course the idea I was dreading it seems a bit silly, but only because I know the score and know we’re in the driving seat again. And I’d much rather Aberdeen were our rivals. I don’t miss Rangers at all. Not a bit. If I never see or hear of an ‘old firm’ game again I’ll be happy. ”

Glad to hear it about the rangers but I do not get the dread or the state of gloom and negativity we have about our domestic lot. Yes, Europe was very poor but it is behind us and we can only play League and SC games now so that is all that should concern us until we see how rebuilding goes next summer. On CQN for many years after MON we have had negative prognostications about failing to win league titles but WGS won 3 out of 4, NFL won 3 out of 4 and Ronny is on the way to 2 out of 2. Since MON left we have won 8 out of 11- that is a hugely dominant domestic period. We are living through good times and we also lived through good European times, in comparison to the 1975 to 2000 period, but we do not always let our faces know.

“I’m genuinely happy you see things that way. I wish I did. I hope I feel more like that before the season end.

As for the bullying? Us ‘mineshafters’ are lovely. And come the revolution you can share in the wealth. ;) ”

I genuinely appreciate the sentiments and the joke. I don’t feel bullied and I don’t intend to bully when I make my own points, however forcibly. It’s just the internet and I have no right of censorship on here- if I did I would not be as liberal and light touch as Paul 67 is- so it is just as well that I am left to argue just for my own viewpoint and no one else’s

Oh and he lives in Manchester.

He berated board members outside the stadium after we lost 6-1 to Barcelona but cheered the team throughout the 90 minutes.

Telling everyone how great a Tim you are on a blog means nothing. Telling everyone to support Ronny means nothing unless you’re there. And slagging Celtic supporters who have concerns doesn’t make you a better Tim.
