Football’s better without manipulation

782

I’ve no fondness for Stuart McColl but I’m disappointed the wheels have fallen off Motherwell’s bogey this season.  Delivering two consecutive second place finishes in a league populated with mostly better finances teams was exceptional.  Over the last three years they have lost players instead of paying money they couldn’t afford, otherwise they would almost certainly be challenging at the top of the table.

I like Gordon Strachan.  One of the things I like about him is he is almost impossible to get on-message.  Talk about manipulating football in order to get the ‘right’ teams in the top division is ludicrous, Gordon knows this, or he wouldn’t have used a word like “manipulate”.  On a substantive note, I think he’s wrong on this point.

The game changed when Rangers were liquidated, and it changed again when Hearts and Hibs were relegated.  Fewer people buy tickets as there is not genuine competition for the league title, but some things we can do without.

Scottish football survived without the ticket money these clubs brought them, and the country’s streets, pubs and A&E departments have benefited from not having to cope with the sheer hassle we used to put up with.

I’ve enjoyed our four lower tier-only games this season, they were atmospheric and entertaining.  If this was our future, I’d bite your hand off for it before I’d want to go back to the old ways.

Celtic, Motherwell, Aberdeen and the rest are defined on their own merits, and many of us are enjoying our football.

    Brightish and cool down here.

Any word of the squad for Rumania? Hope Biton, in particular, travels. I feel we need his type of player away from home in Europe. He sees a pass and doesn’t give the ball away easily, something which can’t be said of far too many of our players.

  4. Isee from the BBC gossip column that the record is running a story that our former manager might return as manager one day.

A coincidence that we have a European tie this week and an attempt to undermine our current manager? Hmmmmm……., as used to be said on here.

  5. Morning all.

At last night’s meeting a number of supporters expressed their concerns as to how our club had handled the demise of ‘Rangers’ and how we would address the upcoming semi final in relation to the opponents being a new club.

One attendee asked if the ‘Old Firm’ label would be used in any Celtic statement. PL and several other club officials confirmed that it wouldn’t be used but added that the club hadn’t in fact used this phrase for a number of years.

My take on last night, going on the words and manner of PL, is that if any Celtic supporters are hopeful of any sort of reference to a new club, then unless there is a significant change of heart from the club hierarchy, those supporters will be hugely disappointed.

i doubt theres a dictionary or thesaurus in the world that wouldnt state ‘passed away’ means the same thing as ‘died’

so when you said ‘no it didnae’, well i’m afraid ‘aye, it did’

so when you describe yourself as ‘self righteous’, its probably more accurate to say ‘self wrongeous’ – which you wont find in any dictionary or thesaurus, but we will allow it to be a phrase just for now.

i think you need to spend 5 minute alone with some ‘reading material’ to get rid of your pre-european tension!!

  8. justafan to a certain extent I agree with most of your post,we have become fat and bloated, though not eveyone. . The site stated out with the best intentions but I feel has lost it’s way somewhat, there are some great bloggers on here but sadly not enough. I don’t know what the answer is ,possibly more incisive bloggers, who knows? Just the thoughts of a wee Hebridean Celtic mhan. Hail Hail Hebcelt

I genuinely don’t see any point in us referring to them as a new club, not when the programme notes will say differently.

I would though like us to point out that we have never played them before when the inevitable ‘formbook goes out the window in these games’ claptrap is repeated ad nauseam.

all about the money for them. They are business people, so easy to understand. Especially when so many of the club’s customers vote with their feet.

Any paper making a big thing out of such a comment would be playing a risky game.

  12. My friends in Celtic,

    Good morning,

Reading back, I am no lover of the SFA, but why would they give Ireland more tickets than they are obliged to ? Would we give ” Rangers” more tickets than the bare miniminum ?

( I can also remember the Welsh FA being roundly criticised for giving away home advantage by playing at Anfield )

On another topic; A boost for Womans footie with ticket sales for an England friendly against Germany on the 23rd of November exceeding 45.000 already.

Is there any lesson we can learn about marketing the product, as this game is also live on BBC2. ? ( No cliche about shirt swapping )

    HH.

  13. BCW

The stated position focussed on the social resposibilities of the club and the concerns that such a statement would have on the safety of Celtic supporters.

  14. BMCUW

Risky in what way? I don’t think, based on what I heard last night, that Celtic would say anything inreference to such a statement in the MSM.

  15. Good morning

I was at the fans meeting last night and I enjoyed it, lots of interesting points brought up, one of them was “the old firm” label, no one at celtic park has used that term for over two years it’s a no no, and the pressure on PL or the club to make a statement on thems being dead was a good debate as well, when asked about it PL Lawwell looked and sounded concerned about the trouble it may cause if he or the club came out with that statement, as he noted it had started already I’m assuming he was referring to the Anthony Stokes carry on, and he never said in so many words that he didn’t want the blood of some innocent fan/fans on his or the clubs hands, but that’s the way I read it, as he said a team play in the same strip, same colour, same name, at the same stadium, no matter what he said it wouldent matter, I did get his point and he genuinely was afraid to get roped into it, I can say what I want about thems, you can say what you want about thems, we all can and we all do, but as for PL to say it?

Naaaaa, an you what? As long as we know that’s all that matters, and what PL thinks, he keeps to himself, if it saves one Celtic fan from being hospitalised or even worse God forbid,

I get it others won’t, but heyyyyyyy.

If an organisation accused Celtic of saying something which they didn’t,with an intention of stirring up trouble,I think it would backfire on them.

Nail on head, PL will never front anything in relation to issues surrounding yon deid club involving the SFA, MSM, UEFA, he can always rely on fans, supporters associations, fan websites, bloggers, and staff…………………never PL and the board

Spot on ……. For the safety of our supporters, PL needs to be careful what he says…..we are dealing with festering violence, a hostile media, and a corrupt administration …… and that is why we, the support, should have nothing to do with this new club….absolutely nothing…….but it won’t happen, since many of our supporters seem to be really looking forward to the ‘zombie rising’ …..for the life of me, I cannot understand why…. I have REALLY enjoyed the absence of vile hatred in our league over the last 3 years….

  23. JPT did say that, but I was there and if some one asks me anything on it I will give them an honest answer on what was said, I’m not going to say, awe a cant tell you it’s a secret.

Exactly what I’ve been saying, as long as we know the truth that’s all that matters, Celtic saying the Huns are a new club won’t change a thing HH

  27. Below is a quote from our new manager referring to the old firm obviously Ronny was off the PL message ?

“I want to win that match. If the Old Firm game happens, of course, it is a fantastic thing, something that Glasgow has that is huge and fun and good, I look forward to that.

“I’ve never been to one of these games, I’ve only seen it on television. I also spoke to Vidar Riseth about it from his time at Celtic, so I know all about it.
