Football’s political clout not as high as rugby’s

305

With Coronavirus cases rising across Scotland, those in the game will be anxious about their anticipated plans for some fans to be in attendance at games this weekend.  Ross County hope to have around 500 at their game against Celtic on Saturday, two weeks after the Scottish Government allowed rugby to run similar tests.

There are many things we need to learn.  How long will it take to process fans entering a stadium and which club has the most effective method?  We need to know how fans who have travelled for hours will react when told their temperature is too high to allow entry.  Will fans observe social distancing and how safely can this be enforced by stewarding?

The need for information is great and one iteration of learning will not be enough.  When safe, we should be testing often.

Allowing test events for a few hundred fans at open air football games has to be among the safest activities available in the country.  There is zero scientific reason for preventing them and many valid reasons to hold them, but this is all about signals and how to effectively govern the population.  Football is a political football (sorry).  It does not have the political clout of the drinks industry, or even rugby, for that matter, or some would have been watching football from the safe outdoors weeks ago.

  1. Surely the old main stand could be redeveloped ,firstly I would start with the top of the stand built to the present height of the stands that are place , take them 2large girders down ,that restricts the view of the pitch.the old news room could be built on top of the stand, what do you think

Who cares about the quality of food at Parkhead?

The important thing is that you get to eat it with your unwashed hands.

JHB apologised to WeeBobbyCollins for misinterpreting his post.

He was on a rant about your and my SNP allegiances. If only he really knew the truth about us. Gave me a giggle at least. 😊

  5. Been saying for years,we should get our own franchises for McDonald’s, Subway,Domino’s etc for CP…..and vegan stuff (before someone jumped in)…

SFTB…at the risk of being deleted again…this morning I commented on the ‘Family Party’ video. I said I didn’t find it funny. I then followed up with a comment on the anti-gay/mental health issue that had been posted. Unfortunately, JHB interpreted that as directed towards him. He took offence; I explained; he apologised; I accepted…and here we are…

  7. Scotland U-21s win 1:0 in Lithuania.

Very similar to the senior team. Slightly better than the Lithuanians but without much penetration. As soon as they scored (alan Campbell of Motherwell) they retreated into their defensicve shell and gave up a couple of chances to equalise.

It’s a good result but I am not seeing a frighteningly good crop of players.

Anyway, it’s noticeable that JHB hasn’t returned….as I mentioned before, the blog doesn’t shrink to fit the poitics…

No way do i want to put a damper on the future, but as the blog has been so candid today, It should be mentioned that vaccine testing is generally on fit healthy young adults.

As far as I am aware no vulnerable groups have participated in trials.

    ——————

Greenpinata – the process is generally a progressive one:

Phase I trials – small number (5-20) of of fit volunteers – aimed to see if the expected response is detected, and no serious, obvious safety issues

Phase II trials – slightly larger number (100-ish), restricted again to people who would be considered low-risk – seeking optimal dosage to gain desired effect / reaction – and also again to find out severity of side effects

Phase III trials – larger scale – often several thousand – to find out impact on wider population and – crucially – sub-populations / at risk groups.

Phase III for vacine trials usually broken down into a few stages – 1st stage is large-scale testing on specific groups – in the case of Oxford vaccine – those under 55 with no underlying conditions. Stages progress in Phase III to specifically include older age groups (55-65, then over 65s), and groups with underlying conditions. That’s generally the reason it takes time – safety is paramount, so they need results in the ‘less-risky’ groups before progressing to those perceived as more at risk of adverse reactions. I understand the Oxford Trial is progressing through the age groups, and I undertsand that some of the trials in the USA (Moderna I think) are actively seeking other at-risk groups.

Big issue in America (as reported in this way by many on Fox / CNN / etc. – so please excuse the blunt terminology if it doesn’t sit well with anyone) is that the ‘black community’ doesn’t trust the health system / authorities so are reluctant to volunteer – makes testing the vaccine problematic, since there is evidence that the ‘black and latino communities’ (again, their language) are disproportionately impacted by the virus.

Despite headlines to the contrary, there is no certainty as to why that is (genetic, social, societal, access to healthcare, fiancial) and it is also a pattern in other countries, including the UK.

Their Livery is black and white, like a domino.

Not the red, white and blue they use in their shops outside Celtic Park.

    We can but dream …

Good football on the park brings bigger crowds — see BR for confirmation.

Or an attempt to play better football brings bigger crowds.

What about the jibe to the TFOD2 hordes when they were struggling in the lower leagues?

Your grandchildren will wear green and white — well they will also need a place to sit.

Look at the situation 50 years ago — game against LU / crowd 135K plus and some more.

I tell my son that both his grandfathers were at the game — one was a DU fan no less.

Why — because of the spectacle and the event.

You have the 2012 game against Barca — how many would have bought a ticket if they could?

Then there was the 2016 game against MC.

Better football brings bigger crowds — today’s low rent PL inspired moneyball will close the LL Upper in time if things don’t change. We have no excuse on this / we have been warned / he has done it before.

We need to plan for a better tomorrow — what else will take us forward?
