Football’s political clout not as high as rugby’s

305

With Coronavirus cases rising across Scotland, those in the game will be anxious about their anticipated plans for some fans to be in attendance at games this weekend.  Ross County hope to have around 500 at their game against Celtic on Saturday, two weeks after the Scottish Government allowed rugby to run similar tests.

There are many things we need to learn.  How long will it take to process fans entering a stadium and which club has the most effective method?  We need to know how fans who have travelled for hours will react when told their temperature is too high to allow entry.  Will fans observe social distancing and how safely can this be enforced by stewarding?

The need for information is great and one iteration of learning will not be enough.  When safe, we should be testing often.

Allowing test events for a few hundred fans at open air football games has to be among the safest activities available in the country.  There is zero scientific reason for preventing them and many valid reasons to hold them, but this is all about signals and how to effectively govern the population.  Football is a political football (sorry).  It does not have the political clout of the drinks industry, or even rugby, for that matter, or some would have been watching football from the safe outdoors weeks ago.

Thank you for taking action regarding my request earlier.

Sorry to have to bother you and Paul, but it is very much appreciated.

  2. Stadium

Now would be the time to do any upgrade because of less disruption, but I would think those who control the purse strings at Celtic will be very wary of having a major spend as no-one knows when we will get fans back and in what numbers.

I would be more inclined to spend infrastructure money on upgrading the facilities for fans and visitors to Celtic park rather than more seating.

  3. It seems Park Runs will be starting up again in a couple of months but only in England.

I think it’s going to be difficult. Not too many people will volunteer and want to be handling bar codes etc plus with the numbers out running recently, there’ll be a lot more people there than previously.

I believe thy have some changes in mind, though.

I posted on here that I was prepared to fund a VST where there was more than 1 in a family. Lennybhoy kindly offered to use his contact details – to my surprise there were no takers.

    Anti Scots: Where. ?

Don’t confuse those of us who don’t desire economic madness and the very distinct possibility of partition as being anti scots.

Apart from that , let the party commence.

Leaked teams : I thought we had sorted that particular squirrel when we sacked the Drumchapel 2.

As I now live in Staffordshire, I’d buy a VST in a heartbeat…

    interesting point slabhoy :-)

with a Vst we could extend that not only to you as a Celt in Stafford but the whole Celtic diaspora worldwide.

am sure Peter would be on it if it generates an income stream.

after several years in England it would be a def goer from me too,

  7. Agree with most that there is no need to increase capacity of the stadium. But the south stand badly needs brought into the 21st century as facilities are very poor. I had to give up my seat in the South stand front section as I was having to go into the Lisbon lions stand to ge an accessible toilet

I take it you didn’t read the anti Scots posts on here? Posts against the SNP I agree with, as I detest them as a party. Vitriolic posts against Scots people and nation, I will call out and report in future.

    Who were the Drumchapel 2?

  9. Hi DD,

The Drumchapel 2 were the cleaner and her security guard son who Celtic sacked for ” leaking” team news and transfer plans.

It transpires that the ” mole” is burrowed far deeper than that.

I would not be surprised if you know them. Both the son and father are ( Or were ) stewards at Parkhead.

    Cheers and HH.

Do you mean there is an opportunity to share a ST with me having the VST?

    Must have missed those.

    What did they say?

  12. The most successful companies will be using COVID as an opportunity.

VSTs have been issued to those who have purchased season cards.

We now have the technical infrastructure in place. In time, it should be relatively straightforward to grow capacity here and issue VSTs to others. Not only out with Scotland but to those residents who are too old, infirm or remote to attend games in person. In fact, to anyone who wishes.

I would hope Celtic are working on this behind the scenes. Could be a great revenue stream and become the norm for many.

  13. UJ

I purchased my season card with Virtual access in a vain hope that we would get back into Celtic Park.

And in a twisted loyalty way, I did him and haw over it, and I was annoyed that no refund was given for the previous season missed games. However I did end up buying, and my wife things I am daft.

The watch online experience has been ok, but I do think the team are missing us more than other teams do, the support, particularly away from home, urges the team on, well, supports them.

If this goes on, I dont think I would purchase again next season. It is too much money.

  14. Slabhoy

No – I was offering to buy one from a family who had a spare in the household until such time that fans returned to games.

  15. Greenpinata

Yes, I remember that story. Didn’t realise the mother and son were sacked. Yes, you are correct, I know the father/husband well. Well known family of Tims in Drumchapel.

    Thank you for reply. 👍

  16. Some interesting debate on…

    – Football vs Rugby

    – when do the supporters get back in

    – should we expand &/or upgrade the Stadium

    – what would an expanded or upgraded Stadium “look like?

Well as AN TEARMANN pointed out to me the other day, we are in a world of the new normal. So lots to consider.

Firstly I’d point out that a fast spreading pandemic is a known risk, you may say it always was, sure, that’s true. But as it hadn’t really happened for a hundred years it was easy for all but a few to ignore.

That is not the case now, and any project, construction, business plan etc etc is going to HAVE to include this.

The idea that Covid-19 is managable, such as the flu or a cold, is an appealling prospect to those not in, or without a deep attachment to people in the high risk category.

But consider this; as stated a fast spreading global pandemic IS a known risk and what if the next one is five years away rather than one hundred, at let’s face it, that’s how this earth works.

Also that the next one can’t be shrugged of like the “flu”. What if it was like a relatively recent epidemic like MERS-CoV – 35% Death rate, or even SARs 8%. Yet spreading like Covid-19. It MUST be planned for.

So instead of trying to push ahead and get supporters in to Celtic Park as quick as possible and get back to “normal”, we may want to look at what football stadiums designed in the 2020’s and future proofed will look like.

I’m old enough, as are most of us, to remember going from the terraces to all seater Stadiums. What a change that was and what a change this could be.

We may find we are vastly expanding the stadium to accommadte 30,000 spectators – a very different match day experience. Nicer environment, more comfortable chairs (more like the luxury cinema seats),

Catering and refreshment more the likes of hospitality.

In a few seasons time, your daughter may be at Celtic Park reminiscing with her son over the great atmosphere with 60,000 tightly bunched together Tims, just as you told her about the greatest ever atmosphere when we were packed in like sardines when you stood on the Jungle terracing?

Forget about Rugby vs Football – this Covid-19 may spawn the new Taylor Report, this time for all venues.

    Hail Hail

  17. Saint Stivs

I’m in agreement that the presence of actual fans is the goal. A full house.

I would see the VST as siting alongside this. Very much an alternative offering.

The club will have learned a lot about the nature of VST. Like Celtic tv, though potential for large expansion.

Could be a real money spinner.

There is no substitute for Celtic fans attending Celtic Park however

Slabhoy….thanks for your response. If I were in your situation/location I would do the same…

    Excellent post.

The type of post and poster that is missing from CQN 2020. 👍

  20. garygillespieshamstring on

On the stadium thing, I suspect that if the 10 doesn’t happen, the size of the stadium will cease to be an issue as a significant proportion of the season ticket will disappear like snow off a dyke. We be will be back to the hard core 25-30 K supporters of the 70s to pretty fergus days where a full house occurs very infrequently.

I would favour an upgrade of south stand with no increase in capacity.

  21. Just watching the buses going along Dumbarton Road in Clydebank. Packed with schoolchildren, none of whom are wearing masks or social distancing. No wonder there has been a huge Covid19 spike in this town.

    Really fear the worst.

  22. I noticed the photos showing Rogic and Griffins in training. However, I do not have much hope that we will see them in the team. Not that they are not good enough but they are not in the managers plans.

Rogic is notorious for being short of fitness and when recovered he seems to need a number of games to reach “match fitness”. This season we cannot afford to nurse Tom through 5 games to get his fitness up. There is the fact that he was close to leaving for the middle east but the transfer collapsed. It shows the club are willing to sell him.

Griffiths is another case. We had his mental health issues, broken up by rumours of club discipline issues. He appeared to breech covid lockdown and the manager has commented on his lack of fitness and his return to training. It looks that his past history and his lack of personal discipline will result in the end of his career at Celtic.

There are real issues out there which are largely unknown main of which is the pandemic. It is hard to work out the consequences of the european journeys. Does Barkas have to isolate as 2 of his teammates have covid? what happens if Scotland or Norway players develope Covid 19? What of or players in the Scotland squad?

With all parameters pointing to an increase in infection across Europe, will football face further shutdowns. Will our League be completed? Word is that if 50% is completed then League will be called and places called on average points. Currently Sevco are top. There are real issues here.

Might we be better getting knocked out of Europe altogether?

  23. Chairbhoy,

Fascinating post. A depressing look to the future perhaps, but maybe one we should contemplate.

However in this ” new normal ” how many of the 5 levels required in the theory of human motivation would we actually achieve.?

    Cheers and HH

    Lol.

As for getting back into the stadium …

My view remains the same as it did when Pablo suggested it many weeks ago.

I’d happily forego the privilege of drinking alcohol in the enclosed space of a pub in order to see my team in the flesh.

PS – genuine question. Other than public school types exerting influence, what is the basis for rugby union getting an easier ride than football?

Please a sense of perspective — there is no asteroid out there with your name on it.

CoViD19 has been handled badly across the globe.

It has shone a bright light onto our emaciated / individualistic post austerity world.

And it has shone how weak we have become and how stupid.

Football crowds set up county cricket is a no from me.

  26. Anyone planning on watching Saturday’s game via Ross County pay per View?

I pulled the extract below from their fans forum, to try and find out how good or bad, the service is.

You need to register on their Ross County TV site, before you can pay the £15 for the game.

    Forum extract:

The Killie game last night was the first time I have used RCFCTV. I was disappointed with the amount of pixilation there was particularly when the camera was moving. Is anyone else experiencing this? If so is there a solution other than a bottled one?

I was a tad frustrated for most of the second half due to pixilation. First half was perfect so it may just have been neighbours downloading stuff. I’ll need to tell them to avoid clogging the interweb during the County matches!!

The picture quite was pretty poor at times, up to a point where you couldn’t make out the score line because of was so fuzzy, but hopefully it’s something that can be ironed out in due course.

There was a major BT fault on Wednesday which affected a number of pathfinder networks across Scotland – a flooded BT exchange in Edinburgh apparently – this may have impacted on a few folks viewing experience – will be interested to see how things are during the Dundee Utd game.

Have to say that overall my feed was fine and only had a couple of momentary blips where the picture quality wasn’t the best – but overall it didn’t really impact on the viewing of the game.

  27. Chairbhoy

Yes, a very welcome intervention by Moderator 2. As you know, the same poster has been trolling both here and on SentinelCelts. Thankfully BMCUW quickly intervened on SentinelCelts 3 weeks ago, and said troll has not posted there since.

Hopefully the same thing happens here too.

We have 5 subs that should be enough to get TR on the park.

Just a case we seem to be in the slow lane regarding using these new opportunities.

Look at how the egg chasing chaps changed their tactics on the back of multiple substitutions.

Finally it is shocking how quickly how many people say that football talents like ON / KA / TR are not the players we need to win the league.

All it shows that we do not have the imagination needed to get the most out of them.
