Forster move has hurdles to overcome

169

There has been a bit of chat this week about Fraser Forster making his loan move to Celtic permanent.  While there is a chance this could happen, there are hurdles.  Not least is Fraser’s Southampton contract, which is in excess of the £70k per week reported this week.

The keeper is the highest paid player at St Mary’s and will enter the final year of his contract in June.  On the positive side, Southampton have made it clear they are keen to get him off their books, but I would temper expectations that Fraser would write-off millions of salary to come to Celtic.

Celtic and Southampton have worked through several transfers in recent seasons, including the loan deal for Mohamed Elyounoussi, so there is a possibility an accommodation on Fraser’s deal could be part of a wider package.

The major unknown is where Southampton will play their football next season and who will be making squad selection decisions.  They are currently three points from safety in a Premier League relegation spot.  Relegation is likely to increase their appetite to offload players who could not get into the current squad.

  1. What do you mean Fraser would not write off millions?

He was desperate to get back to Celtic, he’s Celtic through and through!

    Isn’t he?

I read somewhere that at half time Paddy had said to then manager Jimmy McGrory the need to “get stuck in” (or industrial words to that effect) Didn’t go down well with gentleman Jim and Paddy’s days were numbered.

No idea about that. However , doubt if Jimmy would have made a decision of that magnitude.

Did Bain sign a 4 year deal on the basis that he’d be first choice next season?

That’s not an assurance Neil Lennon would give.

So – if big Fraser has a year and a half left at £70k per week, that equates to around £5.5 million wages to him, and therefore £5.5 million off the wage bill at Southampton.

Say we split the difference, and take him off Southampton’s hands for free (!!), pay him a signing on fee of £3 million, then a ‘measly’ £20k a week – that should work for everyone.

Easy, this CEO business – geezs a job.

  7. Forster’s future is all up in the air Paul.

No point worrying about it at this stage. Wise to sign up Bain in the meantime.

  8. Lenny brought Forster back because he wanted a better keeper than either Bain and Gordon are. Forster can play for another 3-4 years. Hope it can get sorted out. Bain is an ok reserve keeper, nothing more than that.

I simply don’t believe he was he only one to blame as many on here spout.

Personally I don’t give a funkeys muck about him,

As for lack of ambition staying one step ahead of the Hun is ambition ?

The issue for me is the main protagonist remains in place to do the same to the next successful manager, and I’d hate to see how that will affect Lenny to get stitched up again.

  11. Celtic should be signing Aaron Hickey from Hearts while we can. His contract ends at Hearts in 18 months. We have a 30% sell-on fee. That’s effectively a 30% discount.

We should also be looking to bring in Lewis Smith from Hamilton. He signed his first professional deal last summer.

Sign them and loan them out like Ryan Christie.

Brendan Rodgers is a topic of conversation because he can’t help himself but flap his gums about Celtic. His start at Leicester City couldn’t have gone better. He’s getting the best press he could ask for. But the fact he’s still considered a rat up here consumes him. He’s obsessed with his own image.

You can criticise Lawwell and the board for lacking ambition all you like. I don’t see that as the issue in this particular case.

You can’t trust a word Rodgers says. That doesn’t mean you should implicitly trust Peter Lawwell or Paul67 either.

If you don’t see it as the issue why did you spend so much time and effort on it ?

Most of the post was you demonstrating his blaming lack of ambition as his main flaw.

Except we know the Plc at Celtic suffer greatly from lack of ambition, well most except you I suppose.

The Southampton angle has always interested me.

Watching them this season, I’d say there is a +50% chance of relegation.

Getting two players on our books whose last transfer fees combined totalled £26m would be great business.

    One further angle?

Could Fraser be recalled in January?

I don’t rate McCarthy and Bryan Gunn’s wee boy is totally out of his depth in the PL.

Aye. That’s why we agreed a 30% sell-on clause with Hearts.

I mean, we let Andy Robertson go but (with the benefit of hindsight) we should have signed him back from Queens Park or Dundee United!

Maybe Hickey’s career goes nowhere… I’m no football Nostradamus. But if we have an advantage in signing this lad ahead of Manchester City it should be under consideration.

My opinion of Brendan Rodgers is simple really, he’s completely self-interested and duplicitous (just ask his first wife). That’s the reputation he has earned for himself on Merseyside.

A man who says Celtic aren’t a stepping stone but leaves the club 48 hours before a crucial doubleheader and doesn’t look back. You do not do that when you are in your “dream job”

His words don’t match his actions. I refuse to put any stock in the man’s word after how he treated the club.

It gives me perspective when I look back to how he left Watford, Swansea and Liverpool.

  18. Paddy Crerand was one of my favourite players, when I was a wee bhoy.

Story I heard was that he came to blows with Sean Fallon at half-time at Ibrox and was subsequently pushed out the door, much to his (at that time) regret by Bob Kelly.

Imo, at that time, only his cousin Charlie Gallagher was a better passer of a ball at Celtic Park.

  19. parkheadcumsalford

Bobby Murdoch’s Celtic career overlapped with Pat Crerand’s from August 1962 through to early (Feb/March?) 1963 when Pat “left” for Manchester United. It would interesting to know how many games they played together, with Pat at right half and Bobby at inside forward.

  20. Anyone watch Leicester this season? I am wondering if possession is still the name of the game? Is it square passes across the park ad nauseum? Does the keeper have to facilitate tippy tappy football across the back line?

Never understood why BR ripped up his book of tactics from season one and was boring us to death by season 3. Lenny has shown that if we go for the jugular, more often than not we score a few goals.Regardless of other teams parking the bus. Lenny has also shown a team can play differently in Europe and at home. Something that BR struggled to get to grips with.

  21. Mendy 1 game ban…..and fined 50k ffs…for sending his mate a joke Tweet, I think that’s more than Bulgarian FA got fined a couple of weeks ago

  22. CELTIC MAC,

Both Celtic greats. If pushed, I would have to say, Bobby was the better. Imo, THE best player I have had the privilege to watch in a Celtic jersey. I guess they played quite a few times together, although, with the way Bob Kelly picked the team, there is no telling how often.

  23. Madrebmacs Grandpa on

PARKHEADCUMSAFORD ,Paddy C. and Charlie G. were Holyrood SS boys who went through the school fitba system until scouted and moved along to grander things by Celtic. Believe Paddy left school at 15/16 but Charlie stayed to complete his “Highers” but was lost to the school fitba team (Kilmarnock Amatuers took over). Wonderfully talented boys who knew very early how to make the telling pass.

Two of those games have stuck in my old bonce –

    A 0-1 loss to Deidco . .Paddy Crerand missed a penalty ..

A 0-2 loss to Partick Thistle .. Street where I lived was chocca with PTFC punters . How times have changed.!

  25. Curiosity – re Crerand and Murdoch saw me phoning my 99 year old -old man .

    He said – ” I’d guess @ 15 games together .

Chided me ( ” You’re 30 years younger than me , son “) for forgetting that he and I had attended a Glasgow Cup game v Deidco in 62 – Celtic won – Crerand scored /Murdoch scored .

    I don’t remember that at all .!!

Thanks for that! Just found the Glasgow Cup game from 1962 on Celticwiki. Quite a story behind that game never mind the result. Interesting thing is that the Rangers team was pretty much their classic line-up from the early 1960s so a great result for the Bhoys, Bobby and Paddy included.

  27. If the media started saying such and such an EPL club was after Lenny we’d say they were trying to destabilize us. Does the same apply to sevco? They are desperate to link SG with a big job down South, today it’s Arsenal. Now you and I know there is no chance of that happening – so why do they bother? To get a quote from Emannuel Petite saying Arsenal need someone like Gerard really is impressive journalist work. But why stop there? Surely they could get Tony Adams to say they need to sign a striker like Morelos and get Ryan Kent as well. Journalist of the year award awaits for such scoops.

If I was an Arsenal fan I would be asking for Rogers before Man Utd go for him.

If they want a manager to fire a rocket up their underperforming stars arses, give Diego Simeone a call. By far the best manager in La Liga.
