Forster, Samaras and Perth

1353

When I researched yesterday’s article (yes, research does happen sometimes) I was far from encouraged.  Udinese had an impeccable home record and Snr Di Natale is one of Europe’s irresistible strikers at the moment.

We didn’t manage to resist Di Natale but he will remember Fraser Forster for a few years.  We have been fortunate to see a few great goalkeeping performances in Europe in the last decade but last night Fraser was second perhaps only to David Marshall that night in Barcelona.  That last minute penalty save against Hearts on Saturday has moved the player onto a new platform.

Udinese had a good 20 minute spell when they looked every inch the team joint top of the Italian league but they were on the rack in the closing stages of the game.  Cha DuRi has had an eventful Europa League on the road this season.  He was a bit unfortunate at the Udinese goal but completely out of luck when he twisted his body mid-air to volley off the post.

Watching Georgios Samaras last night was a lesson in how complex a game football can be.  This is a player who could not hold down a place in the SPL last season, yet playing in a different position he had top-flight defenders throwing themselves at him in order to inhibit progress.

There is still work to be done, but the return of three first choice defenders will enhance the team considerably.  The most pleasing thing about last night came after the game; Fraser Forster’s focus was immediately on St Johnstone.  It’s all about Perth now.

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine will be out soon.  Hard copies will be available direct, at a considerably reduced cost from our current Magcloud arrangement and with a fast delivery turnaround.  Details soon.

  1. Top story on the local news – all about the banner and no emphasis on what a great performance it was. Sad. No wonder the manager is annoyed. I am too.

Meanwhile, are Rangers in any sort of trouble at all? It’s hard to tell.

The banner was unnecessary and childish but some of the posts on here suggesting bans for life etc and some of the name calling has been an absolute joke. I’m not talking about the person responsible for attacking a Celtic steward, that’s a different issue entirely. It’s thuggish and is deserving of severe punishment.

In my opinion Lenny should have made no comment when asked about the banner. The fact that he did and subsequently in the manner he did I find astonishing.

Now I have no idea if the boy who has been named on the official site is a ‘Green Brigadier’ but I think there’s a bit of enlightenment to be had over what constitutes the Green Brigade and the Green Brigade Section and people who sit in or near the section. This shamrock trinity, though perceived as one, and acting as one at times, has 3 parts, and any broad brush criticism is ill informed.

If I go to the GB section at the Kilmarnock game and let off flare should the GB be banned? I’d guess that by their nature the GB would probably stand by me against Board or authority censure, but that is different from a deliberate act or decision of their doing.

I don’t know enough about to give a clear picture but as far as I can see the original GB is pretty small, and there is no membership scheme. But the section is growing and nobody is actually going to police or stop anyone from claiming to be in the GB. i.e. if you sit in or around the section, or if you join in and know all the words and responses, then you can claim to be in the GB. Harking back to an earlier post, I reckon at 17 I would have been in, or at least moved my regular place at Celtic Park to be ‘in the Green Brigade’. Would I have made the effort to understand the drive, founding reasons, relationship with the Board, motive and direction? Nah, I’d have got pished and sang rebel songs with the backing of some bigger boys. In fact I did that anyway, they just weren’t called anything other than Celtic supporters in those days!!

It’s probably a question for them. They have created something that has a real positive buzz, it engages fans better than any initiative to hold up your program at the sponsors page and get on the pitch ever did. With that comes the inevitable wannabe-in-your-gang mentality. Some very innocent youngsters loving it, and some not quite so young ‘rebels’. All good for the Club in selling ‘just can’t get enough t-shirts’ of course.

Us old farts would say the control element is missing from the organisation but it will always be so, it is non corporate, in fact anti corporate, freedom loving underclass empowerment in nature.

Communication from Celtic Park to the fans has been a complaint from many for a long time. I wonder if maybe some communication among us all has some work to be done. The CSA, the Trust and the GB themselves have some work to do. Vmhan comes on here and often enlightens us of policy and direction and I find that incredibly useful. I’m not sure how this is all achieved, but without structure and controls the section will simply be the target of the misinformed and agenda driven anti Celts. The atmosphere and team backing will suffer, and then crowds, and the cycle goes on.

  5. Ulster-Celt We won’t fall out over it mo chara, but I attended a function up in your part of the country a couple of years back and was in private company with lennon and a few lads from Dublin afterwards and the views he expressed were what i would consider to be consistent with what i said.

If some of the support didnt keep supplying the media with own goals they may be forced to focus on the Hun.

  8. We shouldn’t be blaming our supporters for the media’s hunger to damn us.

If it weren’t the banner it’d be something else.

They don’t like us. They never have. They never will.

Early morning Clyde radio – Celtic crash out of Europe… WTF? oh, sorry WT?

I sense 2 separate agendas at work – that’s my genuine feeling on this – the standard press witch hunt (Gnarling Neil Lennon photos anyone?) and whatever it is our board are doing with their no info/loads of info press releases…

    U

  9. Maybe just maybe, if these guys were to own up and say sorry to Celtic, our supporters and UEFA we may escape serious punishment. It could be a well meant error of judgement on their part. I can accept that if we can get through to these people.

  10. Neil Lennon should confine his comments to football business and anything outside of this is a matter for the club hierarchy.

Neil’s job is responsible enough without having to worry about matters other than football.

  11. If it cost us to post on here then many of the names appearing tonight would be nowhere to be seen.

Regarding swearing being legal/illegal. Think you will find if you shout out F*** Uefa in the street you may be charged with a Breach. If you in conversation with a Police Officer continue to swear after being asked to desist, you may be charged with a breach.

Everyone has rights people not just the sweary beasties. People have the right to sit and watch football free of foul language etc.

  16. hankray

It’s not for you (unless your name is Lawwell) to say what our manager should confine himself to commenting on.

You might wish him not to comment on certain things but he has no need to pay attention to your views on the matter.

And FWIW MON would would equally have condemned last night’s behaviour in my opinion whereas Fat Sally would have mumbled some nonsense whilst not in any way condemning the idiotic behaviour of his club’s support.

    There lies a difference.

  17. Clyde 1 ramming it right up celtic – also assuming the lad in Italy represented the green brigade. Remember when the ENTIRE rangers fans sang the famine song live on television for ALL to see – this was not a minority! YET , clyde 1 said they wanted to talk football – double standards to the atrocious extreme.

  18. Imagine if you are the manager of Celtic arriving back at Glasgow airport after having played a very commendable game of football abroad and then a reporter shoves a camera and mic in your face and all they want to talk about is a banner. How annoyed would you be?

Yes I have the joys of collecting two Brownies on their return from panto at 10pm. So long as their father hasn’t fallen out with all of Timdom in the interim!

I don’t know what age you are but back in the punk rock days there was a great rise in the popularity of T Shirts – Vive Le Rock was iconic.

Also popular was F*** Art Let’s Dance as was its negative counterpart F*** Art Let’s F***

Now I saw these T-Shirts being worn – want to apply your breach logic now?

  23. The Great Banner Flutter: Anyone who thinks that the EUFA folk are storming up and down the corridors of power in the swiss HQ ragin about a banner havin’ a dig at them at one is living in ‘Jackson’ville.

Their pals in the meedja need to try harder. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but the only way they can survive is to pull the whole scottish game down with them. They are not going to sit back and let us take the fruits of european cash whilst they take their medicine, without a fight. The club must know this.

Funny how everyone on here can have a view as to whether the banner was right or wrong, but the Manager can’t when asked by the black knights. Does anyone on planet Earth expect the club (or any club) to endorse something like this ?

Good post and like you I don’t know if the person (s) responsible was part of the GB or any other fan group, but what I will say is I wouldn’t be doing the huns work on a Celtic supporters website by attacking the GB, there are enough “new monikers” on here who are doing that particular work.

For the record, I think the banner was daft but not in the same planet, as a bunch of marauding thugs rampaging through Europe, a bit of perspective needed.

If its confirmed that its not a GB’er, then I hope the Celts who have been attacking them on CQN, are big enough to come on and apologise, oh and don’t bother if yir a hun!

We KNOW this, so why supply the ammo?

Either the banner was a stupid and ill thought through, act or it was done to damage Celtic’s reputation. I would LOVE to hear the motivation and justification of the act by those responsible.

Perhaps that will emerge in due course?

  27. Not the best choice of words from Neil Lennon on the supporters who number a tiny fraction, but then he’s only a Football Coach, and if the comments are accurate, his sentiments are exactly the same as the most successful manager we ever had.

When you consider the injustices most Celtic fans have felt in the last four years or so, it’s bound to be frustrating for some supporters to find that the

voice of the club, is suddenly only found resonating negativity.

The offences are reprehensible, the media frenzy is just as predictable, they’ve waited years for this suffering all the while, when darling Rangers ran amok throughout Europe.

I hope Celtic and the active support keep this in perspective.
