Forster, Samaras and Perth

1353

When I researched yesterday’s article (yes, research does happen sometimes) I was far from encouraged.  Udinese had an impeccable home record and Snr Di Natale is one of Europe’s irresistible strikers at the moment.

We didn’t manage to resist Di Natale but he will remember Fraser Forster for a few years.  We have been fortunate to see a few great goalkeeping performances in Europe in the last decade but last night Fraser was second perhaps only to David Marshall that night in Barcelona.  That last minute penalty save against Hearts on Saturday has moved the player onto a new platform.

Udinese had a good 20 minute spell when they looked every inch the team joint top of the Italian league but they were on the rack in the closing stages of the game.  Cha DuRi has had an eventful Europa League on the road this season.  He was a bit unfortunate at the Udinese goal but completely out of luck when he twisted his body mid-air to volley off the post.

Watching Georgios Samaras last night was a lesson in how complex a game football can be.  This is a player who could not hold down a place in the SPL last season, yet playing in a different position he had top-flight defenders throwing themselves at him in order to inhibit progress.

There is still work to be done, but the return of three first choice defenders will enhance the team considerably.  The most pleasing thing about last night came after the game; Fraser Forster’s focus was immediately on St Johnstone.  It’s all about Perth now.

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine will be out soon.  Hard copies will be available direct, at a considerably reduced cost from our current Magcloud arrangement and with a fast delivery turnaround.  Details soon.

Eldiegobhoy Oh sorry fella I didnt realise it had a deep meaningfull meaning as you say I must have missed it. H.H.

  2. Evening good men and women of CQN,

For ages I have been riled by things.

McAskills comments, honest mistakes, SFA bias, Bombs and Bullets, Eddie Smith, a pathetic law of equivocation and the wilful deceit of the public re the sectarian crime stats. I’ve been angry for a while.

Today I feel a bit more free. I wont stop banging the drum and I wont give on fairness and justice, I’m just going to devote more time to thinking about Celtic on the park, winning the Treble, therein lies my peace of mind.

    Hail hail friends

  3. Couple of simple points then I am off to watch the first ever episode of Dad`s Army (pretty ” Establishment”, I know , but funny):

The banner was a stupid idea. The media reaction to it is what we would expect in Scotland. Let`s not fall out over it.

  4. Poor Neil. He just can’t win.

He compliments the sign writer on his improved spelling and gets abuse from Fellow Tims.

Apologies if I have missed a previous post, but, has the GB spokesman, UTLR, been on to confirm or deny any GB involvement.

Surely a statement from them would help identify who should be getting the praise/abuse that is being heaped on them.

  5. BrotherAidanIwisnaelate on

Dear Ulysses, remember them well. I am 55 by the way.

I think if you look back at the newspapers of that time some of the wearers were arrested for wearing them and offending public decency.

By your logic the Alf Garnett script and offensive terms for black people etc should still be socially acceptable. Aye or naw.

If your next door neebor was to hang that banner outside his window drawing attention to his and adjoining properties you would be OK with that? Do you have young kids and if so would you swear in front of them?

If the guy had been charged and reached a certain stage in legal procedings, then there could be things said that might be contempt. If there is no proof he is guilty, then he might try the civil courts with defamation. I doubt Celtic’s are remotely worried.

Will you be bringing a supporters bus up on Christmas eve.

  8. Sometimes we resort to the behaviour of Rangers fans by trying to blame others. Some have said it’s the fault of the media, the manager, the board, Uefa, the SNP or the police. Some have even talked about free speech or how F is just a word etc etc.

In this case, it was the banner pure and simple! It was an idiotic thing to do. Big own goal IMO. I hope lessons have been learned and we move on.

  9. glendalystonsils on

Just listened to Neil Lennons comments on ” Bannergate” and I have to say I don’t blame him one little bit.

His team, OUR team have just taken a massive step forward in their development and the headlines we should have been making have been

hijacked by a few misguided supporters. Do these guys not know how the media operate in this country? Neil Lennon is the interface between the fans and the club, not Lawwell and certainly not Bankier. If he feels strongly about what happened why shouldn’t he make his feelings clear?

Now you are getting at the heart of the matter. There is another constituency though, those who class themselves as Celtic supporters who are not in any of the organisations you mention.

They need a voice too and until such time as the capacity to provide a legitimate voice is introduced we are doomed to go round in ever decreasing circles biting each other.

  11. Ulysses

I have to agree with BrAidan. I remember the bam that had f*** cut into his hair and got charged. There was also uproar about Inspirals F***in cow t-shirt.

I think banner showed a certain immaturity and should pass without much comment. Not unfortunately in the most bigoted little country in the world. Was. Eddie Smith at the game?

  12. Shieldmuir Celtic on

We seem to have some ‘supporters’ who certainly know how to score own goals, who in one week have dragged this great club further down into the mire than it has ever been. For the first time in my life I feel ashamed of being a Celtic supporter, having proudly supported this club for over 60 years.

Having watched the B.B.C. early evening news, I feel disgusted and angry – disgusted by the ludicrous banner mounted by our lunatic fringe and angry at the biassed reporting (once again) by the B.B.C. Without the first we would not have the second. Do these people not realise that their behaviour has given our prejudiced media the chance to slander our club. They have damaged Celtic in the short-term by devaluing an excellent performance by our team . More seriously, they are managing to ruin the hard- earned excellent reputation our club has built up in the football world over many years. They have done more damage to Celtic in one week than our enemies have done in a century.

I hope they are proud of themselves. When will they ever learn!

  13. I wouldn’t have had a problem with Lenny saying that he thought the banner was ill advised.

He didn’t it’s the condescending, disrespectful manner that has angered me.

  14. Switched on tele.,and what do you hear. The Celtic Chairman, uttering words like,we are on the front foot,we will weed them out,I thought I waslistening to a brit.,officer in the six counties talking about the taigs. Then lenny walking into a media set up talking about things he should distance himself from.

What about innocent until proved guilty, brit.,justice and all that. This young man is hung, drawn and quarter before he is found guilty of any alleged offence.Who did our Chairman sound like again,ah now I remember.Slan

  15. Lads if anyone on here knows the green brigade please tell them to screw the nut.

Last night I didn’t think anything of it but the media etc have won they will now tarnish us and say we told u so ones as bad as each other.

Personally without the GB parkhead’s atmosphere is like a morgue.

Please also pass on that remember the statement in the Scotsman or Scotland on Sunday I can’t remember, it said the police will crush the GB.

Now lads please dint give them anymore ammunition.

I was also listening to Clyde and they’re loving it and a caller came on and said why doesn’t PL do away with that section so there you have it lads let’s prove these scumbags wrong and get back to light up paradise cos that’s what you are best at.

The media the establishment the lot have been waiting for this moment for months after Manchester so please let’s prove that we are the best fans in the world.

  16. Brother Aiden

I think you’ve taken my premise and run away with it – how you go from zeitgeist to me being pro racial slurs is beyond my ken.

I don’t think there were many folk arrested for wearing those t-shirts – I may be wrong but hey, there you go.

My neighbours are entitled to do what they want – and in the interests of freedom of speech I would defend their rights to do so – although it might not be reciprocated.

I have a ten year old and like the flawed human I am I can be heard to utter the odd expletive within earshot – but it seems, like me, she’s wise to the nuance of swearing and its arena – she seems to still like me though. Because I don’t swear at her or to her.

And yes, I swear a lot – I like to think it sort of balances out my massive intellect and vocabulary…

On a totally separate matter (Although linked) in the past 2 seasons – any single time I have heard the F the SFA chant I can’t stop myself grinning, in total agreement with the sentiment – sometimes other words just won’t do.

Please don’t take anything above as a difinitive display (Excuse the pun) of my feelings on the much vaunted and vilified banner…

    U

  17. Brother Aiden, some excellent posts in the last hour, I concur with most of what you say.

How and ever, I read your 5.30 post and I disagree with your assertion that the Glesga polis don’t have the Celtic fans in their sights. Their six digit pawprints are all over this bill. If you had the misfortune to hear / see Les Gray on Scotland Tonight on Wednesday you wouldn’t doubt it.

As I say, I agree with you on the banner / decency / Celtic standards arguments but we are on the establishments radar, no doubt.

Why else would a bad word on a banner be Reporting Scotlands lead item on the evening bulletin?

    Anyway, Hail Hail te ye.

  18. There is nothing like the Celtic family. This outrage at ‘so called’ Celtic fans and their offensive banner, when Atletico Madris fans unveiled their ‘F you Billy McNeil’ banner a few weeks ago, where was the collective outrage? The captain of the Lisbon Lions gets abused and it gets nada, no reaction. But woe betide anyone who damages the ‘reputation’ of the support. I take it the reputation doesn’t extend to defending the Lisbon captain, just defending the reputation per se? Utterly pathetic.

Who exactly earned the reputation anyway?

These ‘not real fans’ are the same hard core who go every where, it is them who EARN the reputation abroad. How selfless of them to put themselves forward to be shot down by the true KEEPERS of reputation, the grand old morally superior keyboard brigade whose hands must be sore from slapping themselves on the back. Nasty illicit songs were in the repertoire when those ‘not real fans’ managed to EARN your cherished reputation. One illicit banner and your up up up and away on your high horses, hang em high, how very Celtic.

Its for that exact same reason Lennon should have simply retorted “Peter Lawwell has already said his piece from the club, thats all the air time il be giving it – next question”

He had no reason to echo what Lawwell had already said – I understand he is saying what most of us think, however by responding, by giving it air time he is filling the columns of those very same people with the most public agenda against our football club.

I have seen his Liverpool comment making it as the main headline on one newspaper website – I doubt the majority of them will even bother printing it.

    Why load their gun

  22. Lads just been reading some other comments, now please STOP turning on each other that’s what they want.

We are Celtic supporters faithful through and through.

They want us to fight and go against the GB but remember when our team is struggling the players look for something to give then that extra spark and they are the GB.

  23. BrotherAidanIwisnaelate on

Hamilton Tim, now call me old mincey heid here but, the OOh Aaah up the Ra boys cost the club 15k. The banner bhoys look to have cost us an even bigger fine ( possibly). Now the Ra boys and the banner boys will be screamin’ from the rooftops Jan 1st for new signings. Would the fine money not have been better added to the ‘war chest’ (Love that name). They will be criticising the club for not spending while racking up the fines…. Aye its easy when its not coming out of your pocket to be ‘political’ or standing up for your ‘rights’.

I have been very careful not to blame anyone in any of my comments (not that you said I have) just saying there needs to be real information before any judgement is applied.

Blogs by their nature feed on themselves, a comment or opinon given one poster can be taken as a fact by the next reader and before you know it many think the meaning applied is true.

Check back for what Bankier actually said about the Tartan Army and what meaning a poster gave of what he said as an example.

Much of the reason for discord comes from lack of real information to INFORM debate but as long as the truth emerges before too much damage is done the heat generated keeps us warm on cold winter nights.

  25. Have just scrolled back to see that we have fallen for the trap right here on CQN.

Lets draw a line under the banner and get back to talking about what was one of the best performances we have seen from a Celtic team in quite a few years..

Here im a frigging mine shafter or whatever you happy clappers call us – im a doom and gloom merchant and at this moment in time I am like Scrooge just after he has been shown his 3 ghosts but you lot have turned the TV channel over.

Let me have some positive air time PLEASE….!!!

  26. Brother Aiden, are you clear on who you are blaming or holding responsible for the banner and the fines?

It’s the words from within Parkhead that have left me in this vacuous state.
