Fraught preseason, instinct ruling head

657

Really pleased Leigh Griffiths is back in the Scotland squad, it’s just reward for his work this season, although the prospect of having so many Celtic players on international duty in June is an unwelcome one, considering we’ve Champions League qualifiers to prepare for in July.  Preseason is already looking fraught.

I’d convinced myself I wasn’t too bother if newco are promoted this season or not, all the big battles have been won and lost.  I realised differently when I received a text yesterday saying Queens were a goal up.  Your instinct can tell you things your head can’t.

Another season of lower league football will drain them of an additional £10m, which I don’t think they have, but I don’t think they have enough money to complete a season in the top flight either.  It doesn’t matter if the boat sinks in 50m of water or 50km, there would be a deficit in either league.  Viability remains the subject of undocumented fantasy, cannon fodder-dom awaits in the top flight, ignominious avoidance in the lower leagues.

If Mike Ashley cuts them some slack, they will eventually be a top 12 club.  When they are, Celtic will earn an extra £4m from ticket sales and indirect incremental income, enough to make a difference on the field.  Similar income will go to Ibrox, but this isn’t enough to fund a turnaround.  My preference would be to have both Hibs and Hearts back next season but I’m chilled either way.

Very last call for the Ben Nevis Huddle, which takes place on Saturday 13 June in aid of the Celtic Foundation.  If you’re up for it, sign up here…..

Correct. You just beat me to it.

Also, the article states that just over 12% of people from deprived areas make it to medical schools.

Why should that be suspect? It is clear that kids from deprived areas are going to be less likely to achieve the grades required for med school, for obvious reasons.

It doesn’t take a genious to work that out.

The Nationalists did not help either. I say that as a Yes voter who did vote Nationalist recently. Poltical dogmatists are not really my thing. A bit of light and shade helps

Not sure it’s due to any one side TBH. As Bada Bing said earlier, it’s to do with a lack of tolerence on all side of all debates. Can be difficult to debate over the blog – communication is more difficult and things seem to escalate rather rapidly!

  3. BMCUW of course families have their disagreements and I,m not advocating posters on here never disagree but the amount of political posts – from all sides, personal attacks and frankly crap posts are getting so bad you have to question, as some obviously have, is it worth it. Just the thoughts of a simple wee Hebridean Celtic fan with a penchant for plugging Stornoway Black Pudding Hail Hail Hebcelt

Just had a look at the ticket availability for Sunday’s game, stadium filling up with pockets of seats available in the top tier and not many remaining in the lower sections. Looking forward to it already, get there early….

I don’t mind a bit of politics on CQN but it tended to just be belittling people who disagreed with your opinion.

If you said Lustig was better than Matthews and I thought the opposite we could discuss is without personal attacks… Quite a few political posters didn’t

I should have started my post by saying that I see your point. And I do.

Personally I love a good argument and we used to get some belters on here. But they were informed, and even respectful.

Maybe not so much now,but I still think most disagreements are of the informed and respectful type.

And I really miss the good old days of pedantry when I could have had oodles of fun explaining the spelling of genius.

Are you actually claiming that the Nepal earthquakes were a direct result of CERN?

That part of the world has had extremely high and volatile earthquake activity for millions of years. Indeed it was massive and prolonged tectonic plate shifting that brought the Himalayas into existence.

CERN is what, 3 maybe 4 years in place?

With all due respect my friend, you’re onto plums with that one.

I think the point is that universities should be looking to recruit potential rather than achievement.

So perhaps positive discrimination in favour of those from a particular type of background, or school.

Your public health wallahs are forever banging on about the adverse effects on life chances that flow from deprivation. You’d think those dealing with admission to medical schools would be savvy enough to apply some of the lessons in their day to day lives. Physician heal thyself, I suppose.

The universities are recruiting potential. In fact they’re recruiting those they believe will have the best chance of fulfilling that potential. But there’s more than one solution to the problem. If you want to improve the chances of those from poor backgrounds then why not select for potential earlier and ensure the top students’ achievement at school is raised to be at last as good as those from better backgrounds? Or create more places at medial schools.

  28. There a many areas of Britain where students do not think of applying for University. No one in their family has gone, none of their mates are going so they don’t think of doing it themselves.

12% of students from deprived areas make it to medical school… What is the % of applicants from deprived areas? I would hazard a guess that it’s low.

    Bad pupils,mate. Sad but true.

General standards in poorer areas are low. Teachers are faced with the choice of trying to teach the bright pupils to their maximum or the not so bright to at least a bare minimum.

As GSH said, choices have to be made.
