Freaky seven goal Europeans

699
Seven goal scores are remarkably scarce in football but for the second time this month we look ahead to a Champions League opponent who has recently scored that number in a single game.  Helsingborgs went to town on Swedish Allsvenskan side Kalmar yesterday.  Kalmar are struggling in the league this season but were faring better in Europe until Young Boys of Berne overturned a Europa League deficit against them on Thursday.

Form appears to vary widely in the Swedish league, not idea circumstances for placing a bet.

Midweek friendly internationals will not help Neil Lennon’s preparations as Celtic face the third of five games on the road in the Highlands on Saturday before heading to Sweden, especially as the early season injury count rises inexplicably.  I would caution against risking too much on a bet on the Ross County game for this reason.  County’s remarkably year-long run without a league defeat might stretch another week.

The first issue of CQN Magazine of the new season is due to be with you soon.  If you would like to contribute an article to a future edition let me know, articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk.  Final shout also for anyone who would like to advertise to the same address.

  1. I think Lenny will have a bit of a dilema come the Ross Cty game.

Does he go with his second team, or try and get the first pick team more up to speed ????

Could have been avoided if the squad had gone back a month early, plenty of time to rest the players during the season, this season of all seasons, we were in a position to do this, just my opinion mind.

    Cumnock- now that’s bad.

Campbeltown as well as most of Argyll, Dunoon included, have always been pro-Unionist ultra presbyterian sstrongholds. Exception being Bute- Marquis converted to Catholism and it has a mix of faiths, including Episcopalianism. Plenty tims in Bute (Rothesay). But that mix didn’t happen in Campbeltown for sure- always thought it had a dour Presbyterian greyness to it.

Re Izzy for Norwich, who would you play left back and/or who would you buy to replace him?

  11. Hello everyone.

KevJungle, sincere condolences on the loss of your brother. May he rest in peace.

  12. CBB:

    Exactly.

What is it with this sudden trend to right Izzy off as some sort of dud all of a sudden.

Have we forgotten how good he has been for us?

Give the guy some time to get back in the groove after a bad injury.

  13. Izzy isn’t the next Lee Naylor. He will take a bit more time to get over a serious injury.

There are many more I would rather lose before Izzy, though he can go for funny money if it’s offered.

It;s only now that he’s a bit off his game we realise what we had when he was charging up and down the park.

  14. Today I’ve had some work to do on a story developing in Peru. As usual, when going over media reports on a completely unrelated subject, I found myself looking at the local football news.

Peru’s two best known players, Jefferson Farfán and Claudio Pizarro, are both in Germany these days, at Schalke and Bayern Munich respectively. They have other players in France, Portugal, Brazil, Italy and so on. But there is a game coming up against Bolivia in La Paz, 3,640 metres up into the Andes, a famously difficult place for visiting teams to go.

Clever old national team boss, Sergio Markarián, has decided to put together a special mountain squad specifically with this match in mind, turning to players from Peru’s own Andean teams because they have experience of the conditions if not of playing much international football.

One such team is Sport Huancayo, whose stadium is at an elevation of 3,259 metres. Not quite La Paz heights, but not far off.

Representing Sport Huancayo in the squad will be a right wing-back aged 36, Rafael Farfán. He is wee Jefferson’s uncle.

    Funny old game.

Great post! Much of which chimes with my own outlook. Not sure about the national anthem though, will never really be the anthem of the Scots, nor was it written to be so, though there have been quite a few versions. Nobody should be ordered to sing an anthem (as team Great Britain was) and in fact only a minority of the winning competitors knew the words. And that is how it should be. On your wider point well we all share the history of these Isles, and indeed are still learning it, and hopefully still learning from it. Scotland’s links with Ireland go back thousands of years, and indeed without them, ie without the Gaels, we would not have a Scotland at all.

  16. Bloke109

Not bad for a left back but I would want £6 million. I think his international performances should be taken into account.

I’m not one to put mad valuations on our players but we have a few who worth serious money, Wanyama, Kayal, Hooper, Izzy.

I know Ki is highly rated by many but I would take a firm offer of £5 m for him.

  17. The trouble with selling our International stars for £5m or less is that we replace them with Championship standards (Fox, Naylor) who cost us £2m to £3m, so we end up with a weakened position and £2m to £3m profit which we will spend on the wages of the inferior player we bought.

I would not pay too much attention to the Controversialist Kojo. He advocated selling Aiden for £3m and even urged a straight swop for Liam Lawrence (who he?) at one point. Follow Kojo’s advice and we’d have a squad to match Rangers right enough.

Izzy, while not back to his best, is still a fair upgrade on the Fox/Braafheid/Naylor nightmares of recent years. He should not be sold cheap. We do not need the money that desperately.

We can afford to lose a midfielder but, again, let them pay the going rate. If they were buying a Korean with almost 50 caps and half a dozen international goals from a club in a major league, EPL clubs would be paying £8 to £10m. Larsson was still Larsson when he played SPL football. Ki is still a top class centrocampista. Do not be in a hurry to sell to the first bidder.

  18. Good post Eddie,my dad was in the hli, both grandas in the eigth army,2 great grandas died with gas in ther lungs in ww1,my mum was laid to rest on the 11th of the 11th last year and wad proud of her forefathers as i am.we didn’t hide in the yards as we didnt have the option.

I’m trying to see the other side of this, and to be honest, a tidy profit and buy a cheaper full-back (Dixon) is a dream of an asset management. What I would never want to see is the rumour of Dillon, so move Matthews to LB. Either way, what makes more sense is to keep a hold of the better players, get into the CL so that the club and the players raise a European profile – us, so that players are then attracted to us next time, and the players can then fill their boots.

Remember that dude from Casablanca we got in when Izzy was out last year.

He was a nightmare as well.

Izzy while not playing that well right now is a step above what we have in that portion of the team. Only really Charlie can play there if he is out (and he did very well last year in fairness) but he is better in the centre.

If we could trust K.Wilson to be consistent and Rogne to be fit I’d sell Izzy for 5M and move Charlie over to Left back for the season as we don’t need Izzy to win the SPL as last year proved.

I’ve just logged on for the 2nd time today (well, Monday really) and read back a bit.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. So sorry to read of your news.

  23. I really wish people would stop this ” we will win the spl no problem” re.using our “best11”. Whit more motivation do the “wee clubs” require to get right in to our “any 11”. The SPL must be won by the team which accumulates the most points throughout the season. Please stop this “hun like” attitude of we will win this at a canter. Remember the “cups”.
