From a green jumper to a season ticket

924

It’s one of those obscure football facts which appears more likely to be an urban myth, but when he jogs out onto Celtic Park on Sunday the proof will be there for all to see: Chelsea captain John Terry is a Celtic fan.  I’ve heard many wide ranging reasons why people become attached to the club, not everyone was born into it as an accident of paternal heritage, some of us made our own way there.

I know one Ulsterman, from the loyalist tradition, who has lived in Scotland for decades, and, along with his friends, is a Celtic supporter.  One season ticket holder told me he started shouting for Celtic as an infant, to tease his Rangers supporting father, but one day the teasing developed into the acquisition of a green jumper, an unusual occurrence in the family home.  A bridge had been crossed, soon posters were on the bedroom wall, a Celtic Subbutteo team was bought and after a few years, a Celtic top made its appearance.

There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of great stories like these.

Sunday’s #19 Legenda’ game will be a chance for some of us to reminisce about the days when Pierre, Lubo, Jorge, Bobo, Tommy Boyd, the man himself, Stiliyan Petrov and, of course, the Swede, graced Celtic Park every week.  It will be a rare chance to see Martin O’Neill on the on the touchline, perhaps without bouncing up and down.  Well done to Carlos Cuellar for pitching up, even if he has to play the inevitable pantomime villain.

Monies raised will go towards Stiliyan’s Foundation and to stock a food bank, which will open in Glasgow this month with the aim of alleviating food poverty. Which takes us back to where we started.

Enjoy your day.

  1. Don’t know if any of you got the chance to read BFDJ’s ramblings in the Times. A couple of quotes.

“As far as John McLelland is concerned, he did a great job for Rangers and i am sure he will do again”

“He took over when David Murray lost interest and did a very good job for Rangers, cutting the wages and sorting out the finances”

When you have guy’s like BFDJ fighting your corner and rewriting history as above having Ibrox bulldozed would be to good for them.

BTW could anyone tell me if BFDJ is employed by Rangers in any way.

  2. Paul67,

There are no villains in this game. I hope, I actually expect Carlos to get one of the biggest cheers….

    And quite rightly so.

The wee call last night to super scoreboard from the wee girl to Stan almost had me in tears, then she drops the fact that her great granda played for Celtic and Rangers way Bach before both World Wars.

    Love will overcome everything.

Totally agree. This is a marvellous way to show our appreciation for the battles faced by one of our modern greats, and the response of The Celtic Family has been magnificent,as ever.

Doing anything to tarnish the occasion will just be lacking in class.

Everyone on the pitch is there for STAN,not for themselves. I applaud them for that.

I’d imagine half of the crowd on Sunday won’t recognise most of the Tims on the park never mind know who John Terry is.

  5. NatKnow Supporting Wee Oscar

Posted:-I’m not disputing that Gunning was guilty mate. Also, I think it’s self-defeating for Dundee Utd to talk about banning the BBC. My point is that, if the SFA are going to use video evidence (which thay have been doing increasingly) then they need to look at the whole 90 minutes and not just the highlights on the telly. Perhaps they do, but I’ve not seen an announcement from them that this is their new approach to determining retrospective punishments?

    Natknow Supporting Wee Oscar

TV Video Evidence has been used in Scotland for years.

In fact going back a few years, the exact same method

was used against Big Bobo at Easter Road. When it was

pointed out that Big Bobo used his elbow when challenging

for the ball as an assault when in actual fact he was jumping

to head the ball away at a corner kick outcome of Bobo Gate

as it was known back then Bobo got a few match suspension

So TV Review Panels are nothing new within Scottish Football.

    Hamilton Tim

That’s the Scottish Media for you, if in doubt blame Celtic, & The

Following and that’s a true fact.

Very good to know John Terry is a hoops fan. Then again, why would he be volunteering his services?.One of the great CHs I have seen.Hope everyone gets a great reception.Thank god for BT Sports. Can watch the game on the terrace with a litre of Turkeys finest in front of me..Second only to being there.Hail Hail the legends.

There is a few of us on here knew you wouldn’t be attending Sunday.

Too many “Irish Twats & Plastic Paddy’s” for you i assume.

  7. Mort

Read the same about John Terry. His brother was a fan of the deid yins, but John loved the Hoops from a very young age. Him and Steve Clarke were vociferous about their love of Celtic in the Chelsea dressing room.

John Terry doesn’t bother me. I quite like him as a player and don’t really give a toss what he does in his private life.

I do think Carlos Cueller on the other hand will face more ‘boos’ than bmcuwp on a stag weekend. :)

Hopefully it’s all pantomime stuff though.

Geordie Munro, I know ‘Hand On Carlos It Was Not Me To Knaka Pinpoint Shot’

Will be the Charity Match Vilain.

Surely in this match, he will not be first to play with the rubber duck.

  9. The Battered Bunnet on

I hear John Terry’s headed up early in order to accept the winner’s trophy at the Kano gold do.

Will there be a reprise of the old:

“He used to be a hun but he’s alright now”

    for Carlos Cuellar.

Fair play to the pair of them for giving up their time, not to mention the travelling, to support a fundraiser. I expect the crowd will reciprocate and find good humour in plentiful supply.

    Regards John Terry.

First of all, I am no great fan of his, but then again, if I can only base my judgement on his TV appearances, I suppose I am not qualified to comment on his persona.

What I did not know until this morning was the following which I thought was in the above article but isn’t.

After Stan was diagnosed with his illness, the first game Villa played was against Chelsea.

The then captain of Chelsea, John Terry, apparently arranged for the full Chelsea team to wear Number 19 t shirts during the warm up bearing a message of support for Stan.

    That’s good enough for me.

  13. Godblesstommyburns

I love to read about stories like yours, I was fortunate to be born into it and have passed it on to my bhoy but your story is what Celtic are all about. I hope that come Sunday, extra loud cheers are reserved for guys like John Terry and Carlos Cuellar in order that they too catch the magic and spread it on their kids, I live in hope.

  14. Burgas Hoops go easy with that Turkish wine it creeps up on ones brain

If I was you, just stick with the Bourgas Smooth Lager it gives one a

nice mellow buzz, no massive headache the next day.

  18. The Battered Bunnet

The old God is a fantastic story teller, just when you think, things are obvious he chucks Johnnie Terrier into a Celtic Charity Match.

Celtic are in the Champions League this season. The CL final is in Lisbon.

Celtic already huv been cheated oot of the last 16 game because of a dodgy REF, at Celtic Park.

Neil is bringing in Giants in size, as Wee Gordon stats are irrefutable, most goals in the Champions League come frae set pieces.

  19. John Terry?

    Never met the guy.

The story I heard was that he started to have a soft spot for the Hoops when his brother developed an interest in the now deid club. A kind of giruy!

Stevie Clarke then helped to develop this.

    Fair play to the guy.

    Carlos Cuellar, aka ‘ugly Betty?’.

    Might give away a penalty.

I thought-as did many-that his challenge on Lustig was significantly worse.

No professional should be leading into an aerial challenge with his right leg extended, and an elbow as back-up.

    On his opponent’s blind-side too.

    Thuggish and cowardly.

It happens too often to our players. This team lacks a player like Auld,Hay,Aitken,Sutton, etc who will not stand for such behaviour.

    1. The destruction of property or obstruction of normal operations, as by civilians or enemy agents in time of war.

    2. Treacherous action to defeat or hinder a cause or an endeavour; deliberate subversion.

Economic espionage is often orchestrated by governments and is international in scope, while industrial espionage is more often national and occurs between companies or corporations……. Was he [Whyte] really just a charlatan and fly-by-night who saw an opportunity to fleece one of Britain’s great institutions?….. I am convinced that a major crime has been and is still being committed here, and the only way to get to the bottom of this is to have a full independent police investigation. The leaking of confidential information itself is a breach of the Official Secrets Act 1989 and warrants an investigation…..The thought that a group or organisation may have deliberately tried to destroy the institution which is Rangers Football Club may seem like something from the film Mission Impossible, but could it actually be nearer the truth than some would like us to believe?”
