Gang of 10 Arab Spring rebuked by Duff & Phelps

1001

Comments from Duff and Phelps yesterday that they were not in favour of changing the SPL voting system were intriguing.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston, was pretty blatant about his agenda when speaking to the BBC on Saturday, suggesting the actions of the Gang of 10 was a “pro-democracy movement” similar to the Arab Spring, saying:

“It might make it easier for the [Rangers] administrators to get whatever they are going to try to achieve whether it is a CVA or new company to be informed and re-joining the SPL and SFA.

“The support of the 10 clubs might be needed at some point.”

Too right the support of the other 10 clubs might be needed at some point if a new company is to join (not re-join, for goodness sake!) the SPL and SFA.

Back in October last year we predicted Rangers would be liquidated, a Newco would be formed and would be voted straight into the SPL, with only Celtic arguing the need to maintain sporting integrity.  Everything we have heard since has reinforced this view.

The debate among the Gang of 10 has matured so far they see no issue in openly offering to support a Newco’s entry into the league in return for money (which we predicted earlier this month), mostly generated from Celtic fans, as it happens.

We await Johnston responding by sticking to his high-minded principles and telling any Newco they will not enjoy Kilmarnock’s support.

Duff and Phelps still have an enormous amount to achieve before they will even be in a position to apply for entry to the SPL on behalf of a Newco but if they do, they will surely offer the Gang of 10 a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. The Gang of 10 will take it. This debate is not about democracy, it’s about directors at clubs like Kilmarnock, who I believe now have debts of over £10m, finding a way to deal with their years of unchecked overspend.

The debate around St Mirren director, Ken McGeoch, would surely outrage sensibilities in any country in the world so I’m pleased his fellow directors have called for his resignation.  In November last year McGeoch invited Rangers company secretary Gary Withey to a meeting at the St Mirren boardroom where he revealed player contract details.

St Mirren are up for sale and could be purchased for what previously amounted loose change at Ibrox; McGeoch met Withey to discuss him purchasing the club from his fellow directors and shareholders.

For a Rangers director, influence like that should be impossible to acquire.

  10. Yorkston

    Published: 07 February 2005

    ANOTHER war of words between

    Dunfermline Athletic and Celtic broke

out yesterday when the East End Park

    club’s chairman John Yorkston

    unwisely labelled Parkhead defender

Bobo Balde the cause of more injuries

    this season than Dunfermline’s

    artificial pitch. His comment was

made on a radio programme aired

    before yesterday’s Scottish Cup

encounter between the sides but was

    relayed to Celtic manager Martin

    O’Neill after the game.

O’Neill was indignant at the “crass”

    Yorkston, and although the

    Dunfermline chairman later

apologised for any offence caused –

“it was meant to be a joke”, he

    explained – the Celtic manager

demanded that he is charged by the

SFA. Yorkston had been driven by ire

into making the statement he later

    dismissed as being obviously an

attempt at humour. O’Neill last week

    very publicly stated that new-signing

Craig Bellamy would not be selected

in the squad for yesterday’s game due

to concerns that the East End Park

surface might impact on his already

suspect knees. It was the latest in a

    series of criticisms of Dunfermline’s

    UEFA-sponsored synthetic pitch, with

O’Neill consistent in his judgment that

the surface is not conducive to

    playing football. Following his further

    outburst yesterday O’Neill could not

be accused of sour grapes, with Celtic

    having already swept Dunfermline

aside to reach the quarter-finals of

    the Scottish Cup.

    Yorkston’s statement on radio was

meant to be a response to the bad

    press, but only earned the

    Dunfermline chairman some more.

    “It’s a disgraceful comment for a

    chairman to make about an

    opposition player,” said O’Neill, with

regard to Yorkston’s citing of Balde.

    “It’s a crassly ignorant comment

from someone who’s made one or

two ignorant comments in the past.”

O’Neill revealed that no player had

been informed of the comment before

the game, and suggested this was just

as well since fury has a habit of

provoking rash behaviour. He said it

would be surprising if Balde and his

    team-mates reacted with “anything

other than horror” when they learn of

    what Yorkston had said.

It is a further deterioration in a

    relationship between the clubs that

    soured most dramatically in May

2003, when Celtic striker Chris Sutton

    accused Dunfermline of lying down

to Rangers on that tension-filled last

    day when Celtic lost the

    championship on goal difference to

    their Ibrox rivals. Yorkston was

    incensed, and pounded at Celtic’s

door for a personal apology from the

    player. Sutton had initially apologised

for the comment through his agent.

    In October 2002 Yorkston accused

    Celtic of damaging Dunfermline’s

    chances of signing the Nigerian

    player Taribo West by themselves

    declaring an interest. This was

    something O’Neill vehemently denied

at the time, commenting that there

was more chance of him signing

“that boy John West from the salmon

    people”.

This latest incident was regarded as

too serious to be treated with humour

by O’Neill, who launched into a long

    narrative which swung between

    making biting criticisms of the

    Dunfermline chairman and heaping

further abuse on the East End Park

pitch. First under the cosh was

Yorkston. “I don’t think we have ever

met, but a couple of years ago I

    remember him accusing me of

messing up their attempts to sign

Taribo West,” said O’Neill. “I had

never even spoken to Taribo West. His

    latest comments are just disgraceful.

    The [Dunfermline] chairman was

demanding his pound of flesh from

Chris Sutton in terms of an apology

[two seasons ago]. There is no doubt

we want one now from him.”

O’Neill later got it when Yorkston

    presented himself to the press

    although the Dunfermline chairman’s

claim that it was said only in jest is

unlikely to satisfy the Celtic manager.

“Anyone who’d been listening to the

radio will have taken it as tongue-in-

    cheek,” said Yorkston. “Anyone who’d

heard it will have taken it as a joke.

If Celtic] have taken it the wrong way

then I am sorry. It depends how it

was put to Martin. But it was said as a

    joke – simple as that.”

The reason for all this consternation

    is Dunfermline’s little-liked pitch, and

though it is being ripped up at the

    end of this season Yorkston

    confirmed that another synthetic

surface is being put in. “This has

been non-stop hassle, but no one said

it would be perfect,” said Yorkston. “It

is a step in the right direction and

    there will be improvements.”

It is unlikely that O’Neill will be

convinced, however. “If I was just a

lone voice, then it would not matter,”

said the Celtic manager. “But there is

not one visiting side that wants to

play here. I am not certain, but I

    don’t think even the Dunfermline

players want to play on it. Every

visiting manager has mentioned it. It

might be UEFA-backed but the irony

    is that the Icelandic team

[Hafnarfjordur] refused to play on it

in the UEFA Cup. I mean, let’s get

    real.”

The Inquiry examined the cases involving 121 children where sexual abuse was alleged to have been identified using the anal dilation test and the actions of the paediatricians and social workers involved. Of these 121 cases where sexual abuse of the children was alleged, the Courts subsequently dismissed the proceedings involving 96 of the children, i.e. over 80% were found to be false accusations. There are some social workers and medical professionals who have found difficulty in accepting the findings of the Courts and are `in denial’ that they were wrong in their allegations. They have sought to use the findings of a medical panel which claimed that, on the basis of an examination of cases involving 29 of the children, 75% of the children had been sexually abused. Medical opinion is not, of course, proven fact, whereas opinions and supportive evidence given in courts can be challenged and tested under cross-examination as to their validity and veracity.

One of the major findings of the Butler-Sloss Inquiry was that children had been removed precipitately by social workers who had failed to seek corroborative evidence to support the allegations of the paediatricians and had failed to carry out comprehensive assessments of the children and their families. Consequently a requirement was introduced that social workers should not act solely on the basis of medical opinion.

  18. Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston has

reignited their feud with Celtic ahead of

their opening-day clash at East End Park by

blaming Chris Sutton for the shameful

    actions of their supporters.

His neighbour chased fans away from his

house with a garden spade while goalkeeper

Derek Stillie received a death threat

following the 6-1 defeat at Rangers which

snatched the title from Celtic’s grasp.

    But the outspoken Dunfermline chief

believes those incidents would not have

    happened had Sutton taken the

    disappointment gracefully.

“It all swings back to the Chris Sutton thing,”

    Yorkston said.

“He accused us of cheating and he got all

their fans jumping on the bandwagon.”

Yorkston is also secretly incensed that

Sutton and the Parkhead club have not

    apologised directly to them.

In the heat of the moment, the English

striker accused Dunfermline of “lying down”

at Ibrox on the final day of the season.

That prompted his agent John Viola and

manager Martin O’Neill to say sorry on his

    behalf.

But Yorkston is far from satisfied with that to

leaves the row still raging before they kick-

off the new campaign on August 9.

He explained: “If he did apologise it was

through his agent and he just said he was

    sorry if he upset somebody.

“Then we demanded a full apology from

him, but we have never heard anything from

    their club or their manager.

“They’ve never issued anything saying that

the player was wrong and we regret that one

    of our players said that.

“You’ve got to draw your own conclusions

    on their thoughts.

“If it had been one of our players then I

would have phoned them up and

apologised on behalf of the club and then

issued a statement saying that it wasn’t the

    views of the club.

“I was kind of hoping it had been cleared up

and settled down and that was the end of it.

“Comments after the game says a lot about

you when you win, but more what you say

    when you lose.

“I don’t think they will apologise. If they

were going to make an apology then I think

they would have done it by now.”

Yorkston earlier revealed that he too was an

intended target of angry Celtic fans at the

    end of last season.

The group were furious with the way that

Rangers won the championship and drove to

    Yorkston’s house seeking revenge.

But, fortunately, he was in Spain with Jimmy

Calderwood and the rest of the players and

his neighbour was left to approach the Celtic

fans and chase them away with a garden

    spade.

He said: “There were other incidents that I

didn’t hear about until later, which we

    haven’t highlighted.

“A car load of Celtic fans turned up at my

street after the game and I went off to

    Magaluf immediately after the Rangers

game, but one of my neighbours had a fight.

“I wish I was joking about this, but he had

to chase them off with a garden spade.”

    Dunfermline goalkeeper Stillie was also

targeted and police are investigating a death

threat he received through the post.

The anonymous letter also threatened his

family and Yorkston admits the player

cannot block the incident out of his mind.

He added: “We thought it had been swept

under the carpet, but this latest letter just

    keeps the thing going

“The letter was handed over to the police,

but it is scary when it mentions your family.”

Fife Police have confirmed they are

investigating the death threat to Stillie.

“I can confirm that we are investigating a

certain letter in respect of Dunfermline,” a

    spokesman said.

“Enquiries are at a very early stage.”
