Gang of 10 plan creates 41 winners and only one loser

Q. There will be 12 teams in the SPL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 11.

Q. There will be 30 teams in the SFL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 30.

Although TV and commercial money will be diluted, it is a sideshow compared to the real cash cow remaining in Scottish football, the gate money at Celtic Park.  The Gang of 10 refused to exclude this option from their proposed change in voting rights.

A 20% share of gate money doesn’t have sufficient support from SPL clubs, too many losers.  A 30% gate share only has one loser, everyone else wins, including the club who took 87 fans to a league game at Celtic Park last season.

This is nothing to do with Sevco, who are unlikely to pull a financially viable plan together (although the SPL and SFA are still trying).  You’re being asked to open your wallets and pay for the upkeep of 42 stadiums, squads, boards of directors and kit men.

This is not a viable plan.  It’s time for Scottish football to admit defeat.  Sport has been subverted for over a decade to the point there is nothing left.  We can keep Hampden and the national team going, but there is no viable league structure.  The sooner we accept this and move on the better.

    ++++

I posted in the last thread why gate sharing would be highly detrimental to the long term profitability and therefore also the running of our game.

The 60s and 70s were very much a different kettle of fish where the football support didn’t lend a 70% skew towards two clubs.

Such disparity between two clubs and the rest cannot be overcome by gate sharing.

Think on it like this: if you can earn £50k a year from doing a lot of hard work, putting in lots of hours, sometimes 80 hours a week, you’d do it, if it meant that you could live the material life some aspire to.

But what if you can work for half of those hours for half that amount and someone simply tops up the rest from their wages? Would you continue to work the 80 hours, or simply put in a regular 9 to 5?

Now what if you are a football club that needs to produce their own players to sell on for profit?

And then someone comes along and removes the need for such a profit from all that hard work?

Gate sharing will kill our game.

Don’t disagree with the sentiment of your post but its a bit twee and oldy. Do you think Celtic have more chance of winning football matches if we stay in the land of your birth? Why not give the proceeds of all our income – shirt sales, sponsorship etc into one big pot and let all the other Scottish clubs take an equal share?

I presume you still live in the land of your birth and contribute to the Scottish economy on a daily basis? Do you buy Scottish produce and buy in season goods? Do you pay into Scottish national games etc?

I thought this was about how we make Celtic better and not some Scottish nationalist fantasy blog?

I have a SDM inspired idea to circumvent this “gie’s yer money” Dick Turpin approach of the footballing authorities for a ‘re-distribution’ of funds throughout Scottish football (how socialist, ahem).

Cut the price of the season ticket, cut the price of the ‘on the door’ prices. Give them 30% of c&%k all. Instead ask us to pay a certain sum in exchange for a certificate saying we’re Celtic supporters.

  20. The reaction of some of you to what you dont like to hear or admit really is quite staggering. The SPL have publicly stated that they will create an SPL 2 to allow Rangers into the second leage if the SFL dont cave in. Not only are the SPL threatening the SFL they are doing it to save the huns.

Celtic are a member club of the SPL and they have said absolutely nothing. They know, its public and they say nothing.

Paul is very well connected with Celtic and he is basically asking the Celtic support to revolt. At best this means the club are cowards and hiding behind the support because they are too scared to go public or they support the postion the SPL are taking. Until Celtic make an announcement that is the only conclusion that can be made.

You know many of you have spent all of your time on here slagging the huns for their blind loyalty and stupidity – and yet here you are.

Mullet & Co and others who claim Celtic are playing a blinder – how on earth is being either cowardly or colluding to save the huns playing a blinder?

The only thing our Board care about is money – so the only way we will get a reaction is if it threatens the cash – this kinda does but if the huns are in the 1st div the reduction in money is okayish.

SFTB – I’m sorry but its an act of sheer cowardice for the Board to take your option 3. And all this guff about being free to seek a new league is, well guff.

  23. Mullet and Co on

ernie lynch, I dont care about how long Celtic have known about the plans as I dont think they support Newco in the SPL and I also know that the fans are the mainstay that will sustain Celtic.

i also think that Celtic know how this will play out and that is why they do not need to make any sort of statement. Celtic hold the keys to the Scottish game now.

i don’t think this is a debate were we will see the Celtic board asssume the support are too stupid to know that no Rangers means a reduction in income. if we want no Rangers then we need to continue to turn up in the same numbers if not more to ensure the club makes any progress. The worry is that apathy sets in, season book sales go down, sky lose interest. Gates go to 25k. The current excitement will eventually die and there will be a BAU. Can the Celtic board count on you to turn up 3 years down the line after we killed rangers or will you blame them for not finding a new league?

The Celtic board will do as we instruct. Mind you rangers followed the fantasy of their support, aided by and egomaniac, and look were that has got them.

Do you suspect that the Celtic board dont trust the fans to turn up to support what we want here?

Jim Spence | 21:53 UK time, Thursday, 29 March 2012

As the debate about change to our top league rages, I found myself nostalgically leafing through old league tables and attendances.

It was a fascinating exercise and left me wondering if we can do anything to return to a time when Scottish top flight football seemed much more competitive.

While by and large the big two of Celtic and Rangers have dominated our game, there was a period when that dominance was much less pronounced.

Empty seats are a regular sight in modern day Scottish football. Pic: SNS.

In recent years, the odd Scottish Cup or Scottish League Cup win aside, the Glasgow pair have simply been far too powerful and rich for the others to mount any serious challenge to them.

That cannot be healthy for the future of the other clubs.

Celtic’s turnover in 2011 of around £52m compares with a figure of around £8m for Aberdeen.

If Celtic cannot be expected to seriously challenge for the Champions League against giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona, who have turnovers which dwarf their own, how can other Scottish clubs make any headway in the Scottish Premier League against them.

It is difficult to know how to resolve this issue.

Celtic and Rangers have grown into huge businesses for many reasons.

At present, we have no idea how Rangers will emerge from their current

    problems.

Irrespective of what happens to Rangers though, it is difficult to see how anyone can come close then to challenging Celtic with their enormous resources.

Historically the Glasgow duo, while the best-supported clubs in Scotland, did not average the huge crowds they draw now.

A few years after the Second World War, the big city clubs in particular were not miles behind them at the gates.

Let’s take season 1948/49 as a snapshot. Average attendances in that era would leave current day chairmen weeping into their beer in a fit of nostalgia.

    Aberdeen 24,200

    Dundee 24,532

    Celtic 37,171

    Hearts 28,196

    Hibernian 27,627

    Rangers 44,600

It was a boom period post-war for the game and the clubs outside of the Glasgow pair never came close to repeating those enormous crowds.

However, while the Glasgow two were still better supported, the gap was much narrower than now and often the two were split by other clubs in the race for the top prize.

Dundee were pipped by one point as Rangers took the title in 1949. The season before, Hibs took the title by two points from Rangers and Celtic finished 12th.

In 1950, Rangers again nabbed the top spot, one point ahead of Hibs, who were followed by Hearts, East Fife then Celtic.

The following year, Hibs were champions with Rangers and Dundee level on points behind them.

It is a snapshot of a time when Scottish football was much more competitive than today.

Is it simply wishful thinking that we can find a way to reinvigorate our game and bring a real competitive edge back to it?

  26. I don’t remember gates being shared pre-SPL, might well have been though. I thought the SPL evolved from arguements over the distribution of TV money.
