Gang of 10 SPL clubs set to deliver hammer blow to Rangers

747

It has been another busy news day but for now we’ll concentrate on the two most important matters.

10 SPL clubs, excluding Celtic and Rangers, have arranged to meet next week.  This is the most significant news since Craig Whyte bought Rangers in May last year.  One SPL chairman told the BBC:

“With the Old Firm having talked in the past about leaving Scottish football, we have had to think about a future without them.

“Part of that situation could be about to come true, so we have had time to think about how we would get on without them.”

The smaller 10 SPL clubs have a once-only opportunity to redraw the power and financial map in Scottish football.  They want more of your money and this is their chance to get it.  They also want to be able to vote crazy ideas into the league that benefit teams without many fans or good players.

This is perfectly understandable and expected.  The distribution of TV income currently favours successful clubs, who are invariably featured most often.  Smaller clubs want to change this into a more equitable distribution model.  You and I will still buy the overwhelming majority of subscriptions, but our club will receive less cash from the TV deal.

“Part of that situation” refers to an SPL without Rangers.  This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks.  Without knowing the numbers in favour of a change, this looks like the killer blow, delivered before any proposition from Craig Whyte reaches the agenda.

We have discussed the need for Whyte to present a fait-accompli in order to get his wish.  Having been unable to do that, others had the opportunity to organise and make alternative plans.

The other important occurrence today was the attendance at the Rolls Building courts in London today by HMRC lawyers, keen to secure any monies seized from Collyer Bristows’ client account last week.  HMRC have made it perfectly clear they are all over Duff and Phelps and will seek court intervention to secure their rights.

This is significant.

You can make what you like about a more even distribution of SPL TV money, or the possibility of being held to ransom in future by bad teams who want to vote themselves out of relegation, but the only thing we know for sure is that this has been a profoundly bad day for Craig Whyte and anyone else hoping to phoenix a Newco Rangers.

In light of today‘s developments,  Mr Whyte and the administrators have some thinking to do before announcing any plans tomorrow.

I hope no TV deal is on the agenda back to games 3pm on a Sat summer football and IF they want half the home gate we are limited to their level of spending without the others having our overheads. As you say it will be full of crazy ideas

  3. Interestingly, someone I know was talking to a football insolvency specialist yesterday and the guy reckoned the smaller clubs would take this opportunity to push for more of the gate money. I don’t know if he’d been told of plans for that or if it was just an educated guess. My own feeling is that this could go either way, with them agreeing for a greatera share with ZombieRangers or asking for more from us

  4. Sky pull out .. How about BBC and STV do a joint deal for coverage. 20 live games a season ( 10 each) both cups, full highlight shows. More games on at 3 on a Saturday for the fans…

  5. Paul. Please point me in the right direction, following post’s late last night, from James Forrest ( great man that he is ). I had come to the conclusion we had lost the momemtum regarding there total downfall, and the penalties that would follow. Now after your latest article, my smile has recovered, unfortunatly canny say the same for the bad case of Man Flu I am sufferring at the moment.

  6. Is it not the SFA who decide which Scottish league will provide entrants to the next year’s European tournaments? At the moment they have told EUFA that it’s the SPL. Should the huns drop into the SFL Div 1 I wouldn’t put it past the SFA to announce that the SFL is the feeder to Europe.

  7. Evening,

A couple of points… Great work, Paul – keep telling it like it is.

just watched Channel 4 news at Ibrox, the reporter asked, “what next for this car crash of a club??”

I’m in Amsterdam for the w/end – anyone got any idea if there will be a pub showing the game on Sunday lunchtime?

Could this be interesting on 2 counts Paul.

No Rangers and an uncompetitive environment, effectively being run by the almost semi professional clubs, to suit the semi professional clubs having a veto over Celtic for ever single issue.

Could this help Celtic’s solo effort to be granted permission by UEFA to seek an alternative environment in which to compete in?

  9. Some weeks ago I posted a longish message as to what Celtic might do to provide a compensation for the loss of RFCIA. In brief this time:

Teams which qualify for Europe group stages waive domestic TV monies. Euro monies far in excess of Sky ESPN payments.

Agree to gate split of 95 -5% bit more income for ‘minnows’ especially helpful for cash flow.

Accept a 14 team SPL with split 6/8 after 26 games. Top 6 then play H&A giving 36 games total. If in top 6 then teams have earned 4 games v Celtic – more income.

Bottom 8 play H&A, 40 game total – more matches more income. Could play for an SPL Shield. Resulting bottom two in play offs with SFL teams – again more income

  10. You have to hand it to Craig Whyte.

Many have tried and failed to land the title “Not a fit and proper person”. Even Thaksin Shiniwatra, with an extremely dubious record on human rights could not earn this ‘honour’.

Well done Craigy boy another accolade to add your list of achievements to date.

  11. Without Rankers we will need other teams to step up to the plate to provide some competition and maintain interest in the SPL (for us and the rest). If a ‘fairer’ distribution of the monies would help with this, then I’m in favour.

However, I would want to see significant sums of that extra money invested in their pitches, with artificial surfaces mandated for the worst offenders and financial penalties for those with poor playing surfaces. Anything to improve the standard of football in this country can only be a good thing.

  12. I also heard today that our old foe Stuart Douglas was called into a meeting today about Rangers – presumably through his work for KPMG rather than for the SFA but I’m not sure. I know KPMG didn’t want to touch the Rangers case previously because of the flak they’d get.

  14. celticbob, gate money is sacrosanct. It cannot be split. We would need to find a different model, perhaps a £20 season ticket with an obligatory £480 subscription to the Celtic View.

    ‘Here’s a £20, split that’.

    Haha Paul, brilliant!

As for this meeting – NO TO NEWCO!!!

And also I wouldn’t mind going to league 2, in fact I would bite off anyones hand who offered it to us

  17. To spread the TV money may be a small price to pay for towards equality; especially if it gets us a greater share of the European pot. Those smaller teams will get what they deserve, as you say they have their fate in their own hands, something that does not happen for them that often. What they decide to do with their voice and vote will resonate for a long time within the walls (and beyond) of their own clubs. (I just can’t help thinking about Edinburgh Jury… the bitch)

Due diligence is done by the purchaser, not the seller. Except in Scotland… where due diligence means ‘..before I sell you this institution which is part of the fabric of Scottish society, one question, what school did you go to?’

    ‘NEXT!!!’

  19. The membership scheme that Auldheid has been beating the drum about for ages and the club have now hugged if not quite embraced is going to play a large part in where we find ourselves in ten/twenty years time. Either that or we get the red carpet into the EPL. I don’t think so.

You said that the home gate money was sacrosanct.

Personally, if the away team brings 500 fans to Celtic Park, I’ve no objection to splitting that with the away team.

    That’s fine wi’ me!

In the event that there is a secured creditor, eg HMRC, do they then get a say in how the assets are hived off?

I hope the number of hun chairmen ratio is better then the SPL hun manager ratio, very hard to predict how these folk would vote.

Kind of lost track of this story its, going to fast and going to well.

Been listening to the desperados presenting Radio Clyde the past few hours where the focus has been on whos to blame for ‘the poor rangers’ situation not a look at the actual faults by their club, just concentrating on how to save their club

Love this line by @BTWCelticShow the other week on the ‘Scottish football needs ra ranjurs’ nonsense.

    Paul 67,

I posted the other night that to get into another league, we need an exit visa and an entry visa.

IMHO , getting an entry visa will be easier than getting the exit visa.

Also they must arrive sequentially , as the FA can’t be seen to be wooing us.

However, collusion , overt meetings , secret meetings , secret emails , etc , probably give us the legal ammunition we need.

    The fun has just started

  26. Sparkleghirl, if you’re still about, you asked a question last night about an image of the scoreboard in the San Siro when Marco van Basten scored 4 goals against Rosenberg in the CL.

If it helps you any in your search, the game was actually against IFK Goteborg of Sweden.

If you go to youtube there are a couple of videos of him scoring the goals. The fourth was an overhead kick; an absolute beauty!

What a fantastic player he was.
