Gilmour, black and white and blue all over

662

St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, last week suggested the SPL’s 11-1 protected voting rule, which in the past enabled Celtic and Rangers to block changes against their interests, was a reason for him to oppose Scottish football’s league reorganisation plan.

Today, with Rangers consigned to history, Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, proposed a change in voting rules, replacing the requirement to have an 11-1 majority with a 9-3 majority, which Aberdeen chairman, Stuart Milne, called a “major concession”.

This was not linked to the league reorganisation vote, but Stewart Gilmour voted against this change, despite using this voting rule as an excuse for his reluctance to allow reorganisation.  So we now know St Mirren’s objection is nothing to do with voting rules, the brought Aberdeen’s Milne to say on his way out of Hampden, “You need to ask what [St Mirren’s] agenda is”.

After the SFL’s chef exec, David Longmuir, came under pressure from First Division clubs for opposing reorganisation plans, Newco Rangers’ chief executive, Charles Green, was a guest of Gilmour’s at St Mirren’s recent game against Celtic.  Green has been a vocal opponent of the league reconstruction proposals and right on cue, Newco released a statement offering support to Gilmour and Ross County, the other objectors.

For those who like their irony straight from the mouths of the stupid, Newco even suggested St Mirren and Ross County “should not be singled out for criticism. They stood up for what they and their fans believe”.  Just like all those clubs who were criticised bitterly by Newco for voting as their fans wanted a year ago.

Milne added, “St Mirren FC have really got to pose themselves the question qhy are they prepared to put Scottish football in jeopardy for their own selfish interests, which they have been unable to do today.”

Some people have a belief that there will now be an invitation-only SPL II with Newco being invited.  I can tell you with absolute certainty this will not happen.  There will be no Newco in the second tier of Scottish football next season.

Instead what has happened is attitudes have hardened against such moves.  It would not be at all surprising if 10 SPL clubs declined tickets for their visits to St Mirren Park next season – the anger is that serious.  The status quo will be maintained, St Mirren have lost enormous goodwill above and below them, First Division clubs have failed to secure a significant boost in income and the SPL will get on with business.

All of which brings us back to Stuart Milne’s question, what is St Mirren’s real agenda?  I know fine well what it is, but they have not damaged Celtic, they have not assisted Newco in any way and the poor St Mirren fans will inherit the collateral damage.

I don’t but occasionally on here you’d get the impression that if you mention who you are, who you support and where you’re from without knowing you’re in good company then you’ll immediately find yourself in hostile company.

I work in IT near the Theatre Royal, of 20 folks in my immediate area 10 support us, 5 including me have ST at least 5 have no interest at all in football. There used to be 1 of their ST holders and there’s a couple of their followers. I’m struggling to think of anywhere that I’ve worked where I was the sole ST holder never mind sole supporter. There’s always been a mix, and it’s always been fine.

Hahahahahahahahaha… You come away with some nonsense at times, but you have excelled yourself tonight ……… Noone is saying that there is a sabre-brandishing bhun on every corner and in every office……. However, witness the threats / intimidation / assault on our manager over the past year ….. Manchester etc, not to forget the ‘civil unrest’ anxiety of the SFA…….. And did you know that Barcelona wrote to oldco officially advising them that they would not be welcome anywhere near their stadium in future…..

The list of evidence is endless……. But you carry on thinking their reputation / behaviour is a figment of our imagination….. There is catagoric evidence that it is not safe to wear Celtic colours in certain parts of Scotland, in particular the West of Scotland……..

And just to balance the view I have gleaned from many years of experience….some people I have known and liked / admired for many years were oldco supporters…….but here is an ‘element’, and if you don’t ‘see’ that, you must be living in the same parrallel universe as weeminger……..

Yep I agree that there are no such obstacles to people getting ahead these days.

But we can’t pretend that Irish Catholics in some areas did not suffer discrimination either in their employment or when looking for employment.

My point was that although it is true that there are no such obstacles to people getting ahead in this day in age , the attitudes that festered discrimination in days gone by unfortunately has NOT gone away. Some would say it has got worse.

  23. I get the impression the SPL chairmen are prepared to accept that the Ross County chairman acted in good faith, albeit not in a way they wanted, but that they suspect Gilmour of having an ulterior motive for voting the way he did.

Is that about the size of it.

It also looks like the SPL chairmen are now so irate that they are likely to oppose any move to fastrack the huns, whatever the consequences.

It will be interesting to watch the share price tomorrow to see how the market thinks this is going to pan out.

  24. I’m more concerned with what is motivating the campaign against Catholic schools, the one hope that many of our youngsters have. It’s a UK wide phenomenon and not based on religious or even secular principle. It comes at a time when faith schools of other persuasions are growing. In numbers, not quality.

We should be honing our arguments for that future challenge.

If it is getting worse in the streets, I think an element of blame lies within the use of the internet and the message boards. No decision is ever reached simply by ignorance and incompetence, there’s always an angle. If some people read or hear them often enough without questioning them then it can lead to some pretty entrenched and strong views and emotions.

Which is not a great recipe.

The press are to blame too. We called it The Daily Ranger, they call it The Daily Rhebel. Why? Because it prints sensationalist garbage designed to wind up supporters and generate sales and readers. They think nothing of the potential outcome.
