Guidetti awaits Fifa, Scepovic held nerve

1862

Celtic await ratification of Guidetti’s transfer by the SFA.  The player travelled to Glasgow yesterday afternoon and quickly concluded a deal with Celtic, but it took until late in the evening before paperwork arrived from Manchester.

Aware of the delay, Celtic applied to the SFA for an extension.  The SFA authorised the extension and subsequently received all relevant paperwork, Celtic believed they were over the line, but I understand we are in new territory with respect to extensions, so the SFA have asked Fifa for guidance.

Paperwork was submitted considerably before Manchester United completed the 2am signing of Radamel Falcao, so there is reason for hope, but it’s not clear in Glasgow what discretion the FA used to register Falcao.  The same may or may not be available to the SFA.

There are also time constraints, player lists for Uefa group stage competitions need to be completed by 23:00 tonight, and we can’t add the player until Fifa issue guidance to the SFA.

If Celtic wanted a more complicated transfer than Guidetti they surely found it with our Serbian striker, Stefan Scepovic.  Transfers involving influences across multiple countries are often difficult……

One thing Celtic are clear about is the endurance of the player, who had to sit through difficult hours in order to make the deal happen.  He kept his nerve as others tried to sell him to Getafe – who were under no Financial Fair Play restrictions.

We’ll do a wrap-up of the window tomorrow.

She’ll be on the board before we know it, and demanding that Scepovic is replaced by non-prolific goal scorer ACGR based on shag appeal stats rather than the moneyball ones.

  9. Jilted John Guidetti may yet get to Celtic

THE SFA have appealed to FIFA on behalf of Celtic to have the loan signing of Manchester City striker John Guidetti ratified.

By: Iain MacfarlanePublished: Wed, September 3, 2014

SFA have appealed to FIFA on behalf of Celtic to have the loan signing of Guidetti ratified

The 22-year-old Swede, below, arrived at Parkhead on Monday night for talks and it looked like he would be the final addition to Ronny Deila’s squad, which had been boosted the same evening by the signing of Serbian striker Stefan Scepovic on a four-year deal.

Guidetti’s transfer was initiated but not completed before the deadline.

However, the SFA is looking for FIFA to make an exception to allow Guidetti to join the Scottish champions.

An SFA spokesman said: “We will contact FIFA on Celtic’s behalf to request an exception in order for the transfer to be concluded.”

A further statement, released by the SPFL on behalf of both itself and the SFA, explained the background to the case.

It read: “With regard to transfer window activity being undertaken by Scottish clubs on Monday, the SPFL had an 11pm transfer deadline in place for registrations while the Scottish FA had a midnight deadline.

“At 10.56pm last evening, the SPFL received a request from Celtic FC to extend the SPFL deadline for registration of John Guidetti to fall in line with the SFA midnight deadline. The SPFL agreed to this.

“Celtic FC began uploading the relevant documentation prior to the midnight deadline.

We will contact FIFA on Celtic’s behalf to request an exception in order for the transfer to be concluded

    SFA spokesman

“Where an international transfer certificate (ITC) is required for a player, it is custom for the player’s registration to be conditional upon receipt of an ITC.

“Due to part of the documentation being received by the Scottish FA very shortly after midnight, FIFA have not allowed registration by the SFA of the transfer.

“The SPFL and SFA are writing to FIFA in support of Celtic FC’s petition that FIFA permit the SFA to register the player.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson insists Guidetti can be the latest Swedish scoring sensation at Celtic – if FIFA declare his move legal.

Eriksson understands why the Bhoys launched a late bid to sign a player he gave a break to as a 15-year-old.

As boss of Manchester City, Eriksson, above, was tipped off about a huge talent emerging in his homeland and moved quickly to tie up a deal ahead of Ajax, Inter Milan and Roma.

Eriksson, currently managing in China, said: “If a deal can be settled, I’m sure he would do well at Celtic.

“He’s technically very good and is a natural goalscorer.

“I watched him as a 15-year-old in Sweden and also got background reports on him from colleagues and contacts and spoke with his father about a move.

“He initially signed for our academy but it was clear he was talented.

“To be offered a contract by a club such is this is a big thing for a player who is still young.

“I remember another Swedish striker did well in Glasgow before this!”

  10. Scepovic: Parkhead was always my first choice

    Wednesday, September 03, 2014

    By Gavin McCafferty

New Celtic signing Stefan Scepovic insists Parkhead was always his first-choice destination despite his apparent transfer U-turn.

Scepovic faces a battle to win over some Celtic fans who were unhappy with his behaviour on the final day of a transfer window, which might yet offer more drama for the club.

Celtic signed Scepovic from Sporting Gijon late Monday but just missed the deadline to sign Manchester City striker John Guidetti on loan. However, Scottish football authorities will take their case to Fifa in a bid to push the signing through. Guidetti arrived at Celtic on Monday after Peter Lawwell revealed he had been told on Sunday night Scepovic did not want to come to the club despite agreeing a deal, passing a medical and securing a work permit.

The 24-year-old subsequently held talks with Getafe but a deal fell through, reportedly because of Spanish financial fair play rules, and the Celtic transfer was back on.

But, as he was unveiled as a Celtic player in Glasgow, he said: “I never said that I don’t want to come. In all transfers you have some problems but I don’t want to look at what happened before. I just want to look at the future. My first option was always Celtic and I’m very happy that I’m here. The most important thing is that we finished everything.”

When asked if he thought he faced additional pressure to win round the fans, he said: “My first choice was always Celtic. I will work hard and do everything on the field to prove I can play here.”

Scepovic could face more competition for a place up front if Fifa agree to Celtic’s bid to sign Guidetti.

    Commons in Celtic contract talks

    Last Updated: September 2 2014, 21:23 BST

Kris Commons sought assurances that Celtic are not going backwards as he began contract talks that could keep him at Parkhead for the rest of his career.

Commons was surprisingly dropped for both legs of Celtic’s Champions League play-off against Maribor, which saw them cast into the Europa League amid a difficult start to Ronny Deila’s reign.

Commons scored 32 goals from an advanced midfield role last season, winning both Scottish player of the year awards, and wants to make sure Celtic match his own ambitions.

But he has had positive initial talks and the fact he remained at the club at the end of the transfer window suggests he will extend his deal beyond the end of the season.

The former Derby player told Peter and Roughie’s Football Show on plzsoccer.com: “My agent has been in this week, obviously just for brief discussions, not just about the length of the contract I’m going to sign but what’s going to be happening in the future for Celtic and where the board sees us in two or three years.

“Because, when you have had such a successful time at Celtic, you want to keep doing that. You don’t want to take backward steps.

“I’m 31 at the weekend so I want to be playing the best years of my career at the top level.

“I’m hoping with the new manager and new faces coming in that we can achieve the same things that we did in the first few years.

“There were things said in the meeting that were positive.”

    Profiles Kris Commons

Commons added: “I’ve got a great relationship with the players, staff and fans and I just want to keep performing for Celtic as long as possible.

“I have played my best football for Celtic and I love playing for them.”

Talking about his position in the team, Commons said: “When you get new management and coaching staff, then obviously they have different ideas and different mentality going into different games.

“The new manager is obviously on a bit of a learning curve about what his best team is and the best formation is. It’s just one of those things that has changed at the minute.”

  12. Bryson backs off from his Farry moment

After refusing to verify Celtic’s registration of John Guidetti the SFA are to appeal to FIFA against their own decision!

While football officials across the world went that extra mile to help their clubs complete complicated signings it seems that there was a sharp getaway by Sandy Bryson (Head of Registrations) and his colleagues at Hampden Park.

Shortly after Celtic had registered the signing of Stefan Scepovic the paperwork was submitted to add Guidetti to Ronny Deila’s squad.

In recent seasons the SFA have been able to register the signings of Steven Naismith and David Templeton despite no announcements being made at the time of the transfer window closing.

On Sunday SFA chief Stewart Regan tweeted: “Transfer deadline day looming. Think it could be a busy old day tomorrow! Plenty of coffee and pizzas for the Registrations Team I’d say.”

After spending most of today perfecting their script on the Guidetti transfer a joint statement from the SFA and SPFL read: “The SPFL had a 23:00 transfer deadline in place for registrations while the Scottish FA had a midnight deadline.

“At 22:56, the SPFL received a request from Celtic FC to extend the SPFL deadline for registration of John Guidetti to fall in line with the Scottish FA midnight deadline. The SPFL agreed to this request.

“Celtic FC began uploading the relevant documentation in respect of the player prior to the midnight deadline.

“Where an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) is required for a player, it is custom and practice for the player’s registration to be conditional upon subsequent receipt of an ITC.

  13. New Bhoy: I want to deliver success to supporters

By: Mark Henderson on 02 Sep, 2014 20:41

NEW Bhoy Stefan Scepovic believes all the experiences he has amassed since setting out on his football journey six years ago will help him thrive in Paradise.

Having started his career at OFK Beograd, the striker has spent time at a number of clubs across the continent on loan and permanent deals, including Club Brugge and Partizan Belgrade.

Most recently, the 24-year-old has enjoyed a productive period in Spain with Sporting Gijon, where his prolific form in front of goal earned him full international honours for Serbia. He has now been capped eight times by his country, opening his account against Macedonia last October.

And speaking to Celtic TV in his first exclusive interview following his transfer deadline day move last night, the striker said: “I always have said that I was too young when I left my country and it was a mistake.

“It has taken me a long way to come back but I am here now and I have good experience from playing in many countries.

“It’s a great feeling for me. Celtic are a very big club and I hope we can do a lot this season. I know a lot about the club as it’s one with a big history and great fans and a lot of good players have played here.”

Scepovic has penned a four-year deal with the club and is determined to help the Hoops in their quest for success at home and in the European arena. And he knows that he and his team-mates will receive brilliant backing from the Celtic support.

“Partizan have good fans as well but I saw the atmosphere here on some videos on YouTube and it looks amazing,” he said.

“I and all the other players will do everything to win trophies this season. The fans expect a lot from us and we will give everything on the pitch.

“We need to think positively and take things game-by-game and see what we can do in the Europa League. “

And asked how he would describe his playing style, the Serbian internationalist was reticent, insisting he would do his talking on his pitch.

“When they asked me in Spain, I said the same thing: it’s on the pitch where you need to speak and it will be the same here,” said the hitman.

Half of Scotland will win and the other half will hope they are right. Be proud one and all that Scots could have this say in how they want to be governed. Regardless of the result respect the choice. For the record if I could vote it would be a big YES and I know Scotland would be well capable of looking after it’s own destiny. Worst case scenario is status quo which might not be great for half of us but hardly a game changer. If Westminster’s rule gets worse this time will come again.
