Holm, Yang, Maeda determined outcome

158

For reasons that are not clear to me, St Mirren are a proper football team.  They benefited from a central defensive lapse to take an early lead and limited Celtic large spells of unproductive possession.  Then, after going behind, finished the game playing some of the best football we have seen from a Scottish opponent all season.  Performances against them will go some way to determining the outcome of the season.

Despite this, the team with the better squad won.  Unlike Sunday at Hibernian, Celtic were able to look to the bench and bring on players who turned the game.  Daizen Maeda brought his customary sharpness, a reminder to his few doubters of his value.  He was not involved in the winning goal, but he sufficiently increased Celtic’s intensity to push St Mirren deeper, which itself was consequential.

Odin Thiago Holm returned for his first appearance in four weeks and rewarded the faith I have in him.  He created the winner and, like Maeda, was clinical throughout.  And remember, he is still (only) 20 years old.

The role of the striker can be difficult to assess.  Kyogo was scarcely involved before he dropped deeper after the arrival of Oh.  Midway through the second half he fluffed a header in front of goal, then with St Mirren pushing for an equaliser, was clean through on Zach Hemming.  The keeper made an outstanding save, but really, Kyogo should have made sure of the result.

If this was your first look at Celtic, you would have left wondering what all the fuss over Kyto was about, and why Oh had to wait for his chance.  The big Korean striker made no mistake when the hour came.  Watching the two strikers was a lesson on how forgiving you need to be, even of the greats, if they are to flourish.

Yang had to sit on the sidelines and watch Liel Abada’s place in the team filled by Luis Palma, James Forrest and Mikey Johnston.  The signs were ominous, but he did one of the bravest things a footballer can do last night: took players on in a tight match with a stadium full of doubters.  Like Maeda on the opposite wing, he pushed St Mirren deep.  They were both pivotal to the outcome.

I try to avoid refereeing decisions here, they would consume me otherwise, but……..  The obstruction rule is clear.  You are allowed to obstruct the progress of an opponent by putting your body directly in his path only when you are in possession of the ball and can play it without having to move.

If you actively move to block the progress of an opponent when you are not in possession of the ball, you have committed a foul, and an indirect free kick should be awarded against you.  Kyogo was obstructed inside the St Mirren box and referee John Beaton booked him, awarding a direct free kick to St Mirren instead.  Falling down is an enormous tactic in Scottish football.

The incident had no consequence on the game, it was simply poor refereeing.  If Beaton is one of the best we have, we are in trouble.  He needs to spend time reading The Rules of the Game, or better still, go back to being a fulltime fan.

  1. ‘St Mirren a proper football team’

    I must have been a t a different game.

What i saw, was a hoof & chase opponent whose players time wasted from the 1st minute (their keeper has a tendency to always get ‘knocks’ when playing against us, and spends an inordinate amount of time feigning injury.

St Mirren are anything but ‘a proper football team’.

The player would still be yellow/red carded even if VAR or the lino eventually flags for offside”

This is a surprise to me.

Technically the play is pulled back to the point of offside and any action after this (foul, goal etc) is not counted.

There may be an exception for where foul play is involved. I know a man I can check with…

  3. St MIrren being turned into Barca 1970 is a sight to behold today….

Breaking down low blocks remains the problem. The way we navigated the 2nd goal (a bloody peach of a goal) is where Brendan differs from Ange’s get it wide and hit the byeline.

    How do we repeat it?

Pace, power and technique. Quick thinking and movement.

  4. That should read where DELIBERATE foul play is involved.

I am sure I have seen this on EPL highlights where it played on, there was a foul ref went to card then noticed the flag…

  5. Beatles fans hail new song Now And Then as a masterpiece and Liam Gallagher calls it ‘absolutely incredible, biblical, celestial, heartbreaking and heartwarming’ as it airs for first time

meanwhile on beatles quick news the usual suspects are saying its pish.

  6. The ball is in play until the ref blows the whistle, so commit a red card challenge even if VAR is going to flag a previous error, the red card challenge still happened so would stand.

If you score a goal, jump into the crown and get booked, then VAR rules out the goal, your yellow still stands

  7. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Big Wavy – cheers.

To be clear, I don’t think Brendan is thrilled to bits but neither is he gnawing away at his nails.

    Agree about the squad size.

    Eight out / three in.

But I don’t think that will happen in January.

  8. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Kyogo went through a spell this time last season when it wasn’t quite clicking consistently.

He figured it out then. I’m confident he’ll do so again.

it is the owners fault, we blame it on them, but eric isnt doing it either, we should have went for ange before spurs got him, and if not him then rodgers ………..

    and so it begins.

Despite robust practice by all clubs in the SPFL and the SFA at Hampden, flares, offensive banners and singing of sectarian songs continue to be a problem all across our game in Scottish Football.

Fair old trek for Chelsea supporters to Dundee, especially in the weather there was last night!

  13. i did mention last night, was there not a ruling that the away team must arrive at the ground by a certain time frame to allow for team lines and inspections etc,

so the game was delyed 30 minutes to accomodate thems

then the pyro which is huge , i would not have liked to have been in that shed when they did that.

setting off the alarms, did dundee have a case to say we are not playing this fixture.

all of that, and the sectarian songs clearly audible throughout.

do you really really believe that ?

they loath them as much as they loathe us, any points against either would be celbrated like a title.

  16. Agree re AJ ‘s form at the moment, got to be carrying a knock of some sort.

    Still good though.

IMO, we have to play Holm, we have a player in there for sure, and with a bit of dig, always a bonus.

OH must too , be given more game time, maybe he’s trying too hard, but I rate him.

Tough game last night, got it sorted nae bother.

  17. Superbru Round 12 Update

We had a complete set of 6 matches to predict this week and we have a surprising clear round leader. The male branch of the Kilwinning Kelts has decided to deploy some foresight this week and jump 13 places up the Leaderboard.

    Our top Round performers were:-

    1. BMCUWP- 8.5 pts

2= Hutchybhoy, celtic mac, Friesdorfer & Greenpinata- all on 7 pts

Our bottom 3 all tied on 2 pts were :-

Big Archie, Gutenberg and kelvinbhoy but the computer has arbitrarily awarded kelvinbhoy the wooden spoon as Chief Diddy this week.

With 11 matches gone and most teams having played each other, we are a third of the way towards the league split and potential winners and losers are beginning to emerge.

    Our top 3 are:-

    1. BC Milan- 66.5 pts

    2. Leggy (he hasn’t mastered sitting on a stool but he has the fitba 2nd sight)- 64 pts

    3. Billy Bhoy- 60 pts

At the shallow end of the Prognostication Pool, we have:-

    1. wee BGFC- 27.5 pts (too wee to see over the Future counter)

    2. TheLurkinTim- 31 pts- constantly Lurkin near the bottom

3= Friesdorfer (despite a good week) & wee McCaff- 31.5

Week 12 is nearly upon us, so get your predictions in by Saturday 12.30pm when we kick off against Ross County. 2 games on Saturday, one on Sunday and 2 more on Tuesday and Wednesday. No Sevco match because of their LC semi game on the Sunda so the gap could return to 8 pts..

Best of luck to you all.

  18. Dundee slam Rangers fans over ‘unacceptable actions’ and ‘sectarian singing’ as club launch probe

The Dens Park side have come out to condemn the actions of Rangers fans…

  19. Good afternoon, friends.

I’m just issuing the one reminder this evening and this is it. So, if you haven’t already, please vote once you read this as you just know you’ll forget otherwise ;-) Early exit polls suggest a tight race…

  20. Paul…

One of the things I like about your blog is that you rarely get in the self aggrandisement that seems to afflict a lot of bloggers.

Not sure if you were having a laugh but the ‘Odin returned for his first appearance in four weeks and rewarded the faith I have in him.’ made me wonder whether you were helping Brendan pick the team! 🤣

I liked your comment that ‘The big Korean striker made no mistake when the hour came. Watching the two strikers was a lesson on how forgiving you need to be, even of the greats, if they are to flourish.’

Also the bravery shown by Yang in taking them on with a ‘stadium full of doubters’ was there for all to see.

In the absence of the Green Brigade, for the foreseeable future, the vocal amplification of doubt and lack of patience is very evident.

One thing I noticed (and it’s surely not a coincidence) when we were still level with ten to go the crowd started the age old ‘Cel-tic Cel-tic’ chant and as it grew our possession and sharper play paid dividends almost straight away.i

It was a vital win last night and we do need as a crowd to learn patience to allow Brendan to use the full strength of the squad to maximum effect.

The instant rush to judgement in a negative way is a trait that some say lessens the older you get. I’m not so sure. I’ve heard old yins belt out as much crapola onto players as our younger brethren. I used to argue with my mates who did so from my teens.

Maybe it sounded louder in the jungle but I’m sure there wasn’t as much general negativity in the ground then. The Lions played some shit games as well but maybe got more leeway due to being recent champions of Europe.

Anyways I think we’ll need to get behind Brendan and the Bhoys more than ever, show some patience, sing a lot and do what supporters can do to support the team on the park.

  21. One of my AULD Favourite Celtic songs that is not sung these days…

” NA NA NA CELTIC” to the tune of HEY JUDE.

When the Celtic support sang that in unison, it makes ones hair stand on end….and I get Goose Bumps.

    MAGICAL.

Agree with you, simple but majestic. Another plus is you can’t put any daft add ons to it either, it’s too short 😯

  23. … a full time fanny, you mean😉. Ridiculous booking of Kyogo and while I might need to see it again, the same for the booking of Yang. Areas that should be able to be improved: score from a penalty (any of our 11), score (or have a decent attempt) from a corner kick or free kick, keep possession when you have throw in. Lots of positives last night from those who came on.
