Holm, Yang, Maeda determined outcome

158

For reasons that are not clear to me, St Mirren are a proper football team.  They benefited from a central defensive lapse to take an early lead and limited Celtic large spells of unproductive possession.  Then, after going behind, finished the game playing some of the best football we have seen from a Scottish opponent all season.  Performances against them will go some way to determining the outcome of the season.

Despite this, the team with the better squad won.  Unlike Sunday at Hibernian, Celtic were able to look to the bench and bring on players who turned the game.  Daizen Maeda brought his customary sharpness, a reminder to his few doubters of his value.  He was not involved in the winning goal, but he sufficiently increased Celtic’s intensity to push St Mirren deeper, which itself was consequential.

Odin Thiago Holm returned for his first appearance in four weeks and rewarded the faith I have in him.  He created the winner and, like Maeda, was clinical throughout.  And remember, he is still (only) 20 years old.

The role of the striker can be difficult to assess.  Kyogo was scarcely involved before he dropped deeper after the arrival of Oh.  Midway through the second half he fluffed a header in front of goal, then with St Mirren pushing for an equaliser, was clean through on Zach Hemming.  The keeper made an outstanding save, but really, Kyogo should have made sure of the result.

If this was your first look at Celtic, you would have left wondering what all the fuss over Kyto was about, and why Oh had to wait for his chance.  The big Korean striker made no mistake when the hour came.  Watching the two strikers was a lesson on how forgiving you need to be, even of the greats, if they are to flourish.

Yang had to sit on the sidelines and watch Liel Abada’s place in the team filled by Luis Palma, James Forrest and Mikey Johnston.  The signs were ominous, but he did one of the bravest things a footballer can do last night: took players on in a tight match with a stadium full of doubters.  Like Maeda on the opposite wing, he pushed St Mirren deep.  They were both pivotal to the outcome.

I try to avoid refereeing decisions here, they would consume me otherwise, but……..  The obstruction rule is clear.  You are allowed to obstruct the progress of an opponent by putting your body directly in his path only when you are in possession of the ball and can play it without having to move.

If you actively move to block the progress of an opponent when you are not in possession of the ball, you have committed a foul, and an indirect free kick should be awarded against you.  Kyogo was obstructed inside the St Mirren box and referee John Beaton booked him, awarding a direct free kick to St Mirren instead.  Falling down is an enormous tactic in Scottish football.

The incident had no consequence on the game, it was simply poor refereeing.  If Beaton is one of the best we have, we are in trouble.  He needs to spend time reading The Rules of the Game, or better still, go back to being a fulltime fan.

Excellent work as per. Always look forward to seeing how others voted. No surprise to see the 5 players with the most votes.

It was a hard earned 3 pts last night. And a deserved win too, imo. We started slowly and got caught cold by Saints early goal. But responded well to score the equaliser. If DT puts the penalty away, St Mirren’s tactics change a lot earlier than they did, and it would have made for easier viewing. Still, we won and that’s the most important thing. Roll on Saturday for our next game.

  2. For the most part I was pleased with our overall performance last night unlike many who commented on this site after the match. Not sure just how good the Saints are, but they are certainly well organised, pose a threat when they put their mind to it, but at the same time were allowed to foul with impunity when defending. Some of our forward passing was predictable, too much maybe at times, but Brendan made good use of our subs, they all made an impact and the winning goal was the result of a top class move by several players. And the fact is the result gives us a chance of going eight points clear at the weekend. That made it a great result.

  3. BACK-TO-BASICS… cheers.

    And your points…

‘However in this instance, IMHO, a low key statement refuting this transparent nonsense should suffice ….

…. followed by Celtic making formal complaints to UEFA (remember them? Yes, Israel are a member) and FIFA.

National managers have codes of conduct to adhere to.’

I think we could do both: Given UEFA have a section of our fans ‘on notice’ for anti-Royal and pro-Palestinian ‘breaches’ (and no doubt skilled geo-political wind-sniffers) I have little faith they could be relied on to fight our corner. But if we politely asked the dude (v media) for an apology after being wrongly dubbed as anti-semitic the message would have played to a wider audience, rebuffed the falsehood and compelled UEFA/FIFA to remind managers against making incendiary and unqualified lies that cement the image of our fanbase as wrong uns to a person.

On the evidence of last night’s game , I’d start Yang , Oh and Holm . The difference when they came on was marked . Oh with Kyogo deeper could bring us the goals our outfield possession is struggling to deliver . As for Jamesie, he is not the dynamo he was (faster than Daizen!? Aye??) A good sub to bring on in the last 20 mins when the game has been won . Turnbull is a conundrum , he has long range goals in him but also lacks the dynamism BR is looking for in his players . I don’t think there’s much can be done to change his style of play by this stage of his career .

    was at that game…

    remember someone obstructing baines…

    found this…

His last penalty attempt came against Celtic in a 2-0 defeat for Dundee United at Parkhead in March 1977. McAlpine came up against a debutant keeper Roy Baines, who was drafted in to the side after Celtic’s regular keeper Peter Latchford suffered an ankle injury. With 25 minutes on the clock, the referee pointed to the spot after Paul Hegarty was fouled by Danny McGrain. Baines tried to psyche out McAlpine by turning his back on the United man as he was about to run up. McAlpine paused his run and, when he eventually struck his shot, the Celtic keeper made a fine save. McAlpine had to race back up the park frantically as the home fans roared for Baines to clear the ball upfield. The brazen but quick-thinking United striker Tom McAdam grappled Baines to the ground, deliberately conceding a free-kick to give McAlpine enough time to scurry back to his own goal.

  6. Nir Bitton (a very good Celt) shouldnae play CH for Celtic, especially not Champions League qualifiers.

Hello again all you young rebels

Had a wee sabbatical for a few days, sometimes you just

need to step back and not repeat the same old tired , cliched

    posts.

Not had a lot of enthusiasm to post to be honest, what with

all the horror going on in the world, and then coming on here

and having to scroll by all the moaners and girners , don’t

    suppose it’s surprising.

But it’s game day again tomorrow, the Shipwrecks are ready

for another drink or sink meet up, and I’m getting the old mojo

    back.

No doubt another block everything that moves tactics from

our opponents again this week, as usual patience required from

our support and we will prevail.

Who will the bold Brendan go with ?

I’m tipping young Holm, this bhoy has definitely got something

    about him.

Yang on the left, and the human dynamo Daizen on the right.

As usual I’ll probably be completely wrong, and with a score line

prediction of 0-4 to the leather belts, I’m sure somebody will

girn about people being full of hubris.

That’s if they look up the meaning of the word first 🤪

    they are playing.

Best penalty taker ever – Hamish McAlpine, great fun if he missed and the ball stayed in play.

    ___

My memory might be playing tricks but I think he missed one against us. I think he was a Celtic fan.

  11. Thanks for confirming the McAlpine miss or save rather, from Baines. I was there. A surprise signing from Morton.
