It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all

1862

Last week’s advert in the Tribune de Geneve was in English, despite the predominant local language being French. The primary target audience were Uefa representatives and functionaries, who are not drawn from the local Nyon catchment area, and will most likely speak English, with secondary target audiences in the UK. I hear both targets were reached.

There was a short-lived chat about which language to run with in Switzerland, but consensus was quickly reached that English was appropriate and sufficient. No translation was ever made.

Very much related to this subject…….

There was an incident when I was at school (many years ago). Two boys had exactly the same maths homework. This would have been fine had the work been correct, but the made exactly the same mistakes, so the teacher had sufficient proof to establish that he didn’t have two independently produced pieces of work.

The class lesson that day was, if you’re going to coordinate a response, you better get your facts right, or you’ll get caught.

Shortly after the Tribune de Geneve advert ran it was brought to my attention that some regularly-hostile-to-Celtic online loons were running with a line that an English advert had been sent to Switzerland and a French advert had been sent to an English newspaper by mistake.

This was fanciful, but not worthy of attention, because as you now know, there was never a French translation of the advert.

You can imagine my utter astonishment, therefore, that The Guardian claimed they didn’t run the advert because it was submitted to them in French, despite, as surely the world now knows, no French language version of the advert ever existing!

“If you’re going to coordinate a response, get your facts right.” It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all. You’ve been caught in PR vice.

You know how PR works in Scottish football. Celtic and most clubs play with a straight bat: “This is the news relating to our games and events”, but there are clubs, personalities and organisations which are only tenable because of expensive and persuasive PR.

You remember the Poppy banner issue, which became news a full two days after a game, by which time PR could persuade journalists to run with a story which until then had no news value. You are only too familiar with some of the vacuous characters ushered into the game by newspapers demanding Lloyds Bank approve a takeover, while PR spun incredible lies about finance and probity.

The next time Celtic, or their manager, is vulnerable on a subject, look out for this Malign Influence.  It battered Ronny Deila when he lost games, and recently went for Peter Lawwell.

My thanks to The Guardian advertising people, who confirmed to us this morning that the advert they received was in English. That’s the other thing about coordinating a Malign Influence, you need to get buy-in from a lot of people!

  1. Hopefully this turns out to be a “failure to communicate”

But what it has done is keep the issue live which can only be a good thing.

Maybe someone out there with a bit of clout will wonder why football fans feel the necessity to buy advertising space in English and Swiss newspapers regarding scottish football

I agree re keeping RG onside to such an extent that I have sent the following email to him:

    “Dear MrGreenslade,

    After reading this:

” I take on board the fact that I may not have explained the background to this matter as well as I might. But it’s tough to grasp the ins and outs of the dispute.

However, please be assured that I agree that something stinks in terms of the Scottish football governance and an independent investigation is required (quite probably by a journalist or journalists drawn from outside Scotland).”

I felt comfortable that you are a journalist worthy of the description. If we have any equally deserving in Scottish Sports` Journalism, I have yet to discover them.

That being so, it would be excellent if you would put yourself forward as the journalist who would lead the investigation required to which you refer above. You would have unqualified gratitude from all supporters of football in Scotland who put integrity before money,

    Your in honest sport,

    J

  3. Surely Roy Greenslade must back up his assertion that “something stinks in Scottish football governance”.

That in itself is a major plus, IMO.

Genuinely don’t think Paul or the Res 12 guys would be so careless.

  10. Coming new to this I guess sumbdees already pointed out to Roy Greenlade that…

“The nub of the shareholders’ allegation is that rules were broken by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) in order to allow the “new” Rangers to obtain a Uefa licence to play in European Champions League.

Is of course wrong, it has nothing to do with “New” Rangers. In fact it was events a year and more before Rangers FC went into administration.

The “New” Rangers have never had a UEFA Licence to the best of my knowledge.

Also, my understanding was that the Resolution never seemed to blame the SEA for breaking rules.

More to do with smelling a Rat and asking for transparency…

Very poor from Roy Greenlade. In fact far from raising his French Squirrel maybe Roy could have got to the crux of the matter.

    Which is normally his wont.

By stating clearly why the ad breached The Guardian’s advertising T&C’s.

A fairly simple process you’d have thought.

A journalist of his calibre should have no problem uncovering and communicating the basic facts accurately.

Did he do the leg work or was he badly briefed?! If he was, by whom….?

Regardless it’s a distraction. An embarrassing one for whoever is wrong. But a distraction nonetheless.

    WC,

Why did you wait until RG produced evidence of the email containing a French draft, whatever the motive was for so doing.

You could have cleared that up so much sooner.

  21. It appears graphic designer extraordinaire (oui, c’est vrai) Winning Captains sent a mocked-up early version of the advert IN FRENCH to ascertain the correct size for The Guardian.

With agreement reached on size and price, The Guardian was then sent the finished agreed version for publication. This was IN ENGLISH.

It is this ENGLISH version that The Guardian declined to publish.

There was never any agreement or request for a French version to be published.

The Guardian’s conduct in this matter has been shameful. Utterly shameful.

Interestingly enough you never hear of these guys referred to as British Terrorists, which, of course they are. In fact you may hear of them (ironically for anyone with the least semblance of knowledge to the facts) referred to as Irish Terrorists.

We should start to use the more relevant terminology so the British People can see what’s done in their name.
