Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

Even the English do not have a problem with these songs,English companies sell them infact, even Amazon sells them.I can’t be certain, but i think that Amazon is a company that is based in Scotland?

Are the SNP and the cops going to report Amazon?

Have you ever thought that many many people that are season book holders, regular attenders or the occasional fan that goes to the games are there just to watch the football and support Celtic?

Which of these songs falls foul of whatever law it is that’s being applied

Sad to say but without a definition of what “illicit” is all these songs have the potential to get us in trouble because we just don’t know what we can and can’t say.

Until we get clarification from UEFA/the police etc, we need to be careful and it’s probably best avoiding any rebel song. We have loads of other songs and the Green Brigade have been fantastic in bringing about a new songbook with songs about all the players.

When we get clarification of what can’t be sung, then we can go back and sing the other ones that aren’t illicit.

God Save Ireland commemorates Irish ‘terrorists’ who were executed for murdering a British policeman whilst they were trying to free a convicted prisoner.

You think it would be OK to sing that, but not sing Aidan McAnespie, which is about an unarmed young Irish man shot dead by the British army? Why would that song result in us being fined whilst God Save Ireland wouldn’t?

That is a good point.Personally i would never sing rebel songs at Celtic Park,i don’t think Celtic games are the place for them.

In saying that – it is not for me to tell other supporters what they can or cannot sing, especially as the said songs are perfectly legal.

And as i have already stated – if it wasn’t the rebel songs, they would find something else to take issue with.

When Lenny lifts that SPL title aloft,Scotland will be in danger of imploding.

The best way to sicken them is for Celtic FC to be successful on the field of play.

I used to be one of that section you named, however i had no problem with Celtic supporters singing.

If you are so stupid that you cant see the ramifications to the liberty of the Celtic support then you are about to learn the hard way.

If you heard that-and I believe what you say-then these people need a good kick up the jacksie. Even I know that these songs are unacceptable, and in fact I stopped singing them about 30 years ago.

Those are the type of songs and chants which,IMO,give others a stick with which to beat us,and are also,if you like,my own personal line-in-the-sand.

I think they are wrong, and I am quite happy to explain my reasons for thinking that, and I am quite happy to explain why I think the older ones are not.

But it is the clarification which is needed. We simply CANNOT go on not knowing what is acceptable, and what is not.

its not a question of England making that decision, its a partnership, albeit a very skewed southern england dominated one.

I very much doubt the powers that be in England would like to ditch the scottish cannon fodder so prevalent in their foreign military adventures, and the many military bases including Faslane and the associated nuclear armaments stores.

however, the ball is in the scots court, independance to me is far more important than any party like the snp, if the snp are the short term key then ill bite the bullet and continue to vote them in despite their blatant incompetence. means to an end for me

  21. If you accept that it is OK for someone to tell you what you can sing /chant at a football match then you are one step away from accepting that someone is entitled to tell you what you can say and what it is ok to talk about..

It’s hard to comment too much on the specifics on this one because there appears to be a Scooby Doo type mystery over what the ‘offense’ was. I think we would all like some clarity, and I’d like to know if anyone was arrested for this supposed ‘offense’.

I know you are not a fan of the board but the real culprits here are the police, the media and the politicians who are finding issues with what Celtic fans are chanting while ignoring similar songs from the Huns, particularly as the majority of their support appear to be singing the ditties rather than a smaller section of our fans.

2 – we all know there is one or two idiots who will sing songs that give the officials an opportunity to drag us down to their level – for the record you are not singing in my name

I agree 100% and Celtic must tell us the songs and add ons the Police will arrest people for singing and report us to the authorities. I doubt such a list exists as the Police and Government love anti-catholic/irish songs (see the comments after the LCF) and as such hate catholics and irish and will find offence at the most inoffensive lyrics (eg “rebel against the crown”) in the fields.

But Celtic must demand such a list, demand to see the huns list, demand to see action being taken against the huns and scream blue murder if those demands are not met. In the mean time, we the fans must show the benefit of the majority of us going to good schools and that we are able to do the intelligent thing.

I have been voting SNP for the reasons you state.

I have decided that I can no longer do so.

This is depressingly pessimistic state for me to be in because I now have next to no investment in the democratic process.

I have never not voted and will likely just spoil my ballot paper unless there happens to some outstanding individual / small party available in my constituency.

They do allow political songs, look at what happens before every International match.

God Save Ireland is a song in the same vein as The Fields of Athenry IMO, nothing more, nothing less.

  33. The clarification of the “Illicit songs” will not be by a public debate, therfor argueing about the rights and wrongs of songs sung for generations is irrelevant at the moment.

What is relevant is that the club HAS been fined and the reputation of the support HAS been tarnished.

I have many friends who came out with comments against Neil Lennon when he asked the support to stop singing songs with IRA references suggesting he had turned his back on those who supported him through last year!!

In my opinion the club does not have the benefit of idealistic views regarding the freedom of expression, we applauded when “they” were fined but seem to be surprised that we have been given a similar punishment, surely it’s obvious to all that while they appeared to get away with offensive behaviour for years it would only need a small amount of ammunition to even the score..

Why are we giving it to them??

Stop singing the songs that could even be suggested as being “illicit” (whatever that means) it will kill them to hear a united support in the stands with a succesful team on the park.

It’s no co-incidence that all this comes as form improves and the title race is back on, just like it was last year!!

the fact there is so much disagreement on here shows that , in part, its working
