Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

“I see there were only 500 Barca fans at the Bernabeu, maybe we should do the same for our Glasgow derby game , – oh but wait, it would still be 500 too many.”

It would also deprive Eddie Smith and his constables of any excuse for not wading in and arresting any miscreants amongst our visitors.

I’m glad you pointed that out JJ.

I don’t see any point getting into song debate with the “new posters” et al, we don’t know which songs are contentious yet, when it’s communicated we’ll know for sure.

It seems everyone knows the songs that are labled illicit, except the supporters who are being targeted for singing them, The Scottish police force know as remarkably they’re the body who reported it, Uefa know the songs as they have ruled on it, I believe CFC know as Uefa have to communicate the offense properly to our club, so that leaves the fans in the dark, when will the club inform us, the support? Dont the club owe us a duty of care, we should be told.

  7. Celtic will not appeal UEFA fine

CELTIC have announced that they will not appeal against the fine of 15,000 euros imposed by UEFA for ‘illicit’ chanting at the recent UEFA Europa League tie against Rennes at Celtic Park.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “The heavy fine imposed by UEFA is an indication of the seriousness with which it treats such matters. We would re-iterate our own position that however small a minority is involved, such chanting is not welcome at Celtic Football Club.

“Clearly, it is very disappointing and a source of real regret amongst our supporters that Celtic´s proud history of exemplary conduct has been tarnished in this way by such a tiny minority.

“However, this is a clear warning that such behaviour will not be tolerated and together, Celtic Football Club and our supporters will do all we can to ensure that this incident is not repeated.

“We would like to thank our supporters for their magnificent conduct since the match against Rennes. We are proud of the fantastic and positive reputation we have established across Europe over many years, and the Club and our fans will be doing all we can to ensure that this is protected.”

Hey guys, in the wake of the UEFA verdict do you not think various sections of our support should pay attention to what “we” (Celtic supporters) have been found guilty of and just stop these songs. The troubles are over and Celtic, although proud of our heritage and history have never be anti-anyone in their history. We have never had a sectarian signing policy, we have always embraced players of all faiths, so long as they were “Celtic class” e.g. Kenny Dalgleish, Danny McGrain, Jock Stein, Ronnie Simpson etc – Let Rangers blight their club with songs of hate.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————

What are you on JHJ – name one Irish republican song that mentions hatred of faith or glories in the death of a foe? On the contrary Irish Republican songs epitomise qualities which are the very antithesis of bigotry and sectarianism – just a bit like Celtic. Read your history FFS.

We have been stitched up by some vague UEFA directive. Read the charge illicit chants –no show me incontrovertible proof that anything we sing is Illicit. Distasteful to some you may argue but as many posters have pointed out Flower of Scotland, Bonny Charlie, Loch Lomond are songs that glorify Rebellions that happened long ago but are the Scots asked to stop singing these as the English /UEFA may find them Illicit? Perhaps you advocate removal of the Tricolour as well as deeming the Soldiers song Illicit.

Basically stop blaming the GB or whoever else chooses to sing Irish nationalist songs.

Greenjedi is a middleclass boorish bigot, he has no inclination to listen or debate the underlying issues, his only argumnt is appeasement. His motive for the condemnation of Celtic supporters for singing songs, is it may ingratiate us with the scottish establishment its his only goal, like that of the board, as far as I’m concerned heand his ilk are a waste of breath, possibly meeja.

Bigot????? Because I disagree with you and go to Celtic games for footballing reasons and nothing else.

I’m not arguing appeasement, however I do not feel Celtic should not be used as a political football by the authorites OR other Celtic fans. But until the Club come out and let us know what can and cannot be sung we should not sing anything in the gray area. However, I also wonder why we can’t just sing Celtic songs and leave the rest to a more suitable enviroment. Not all Celtic fans are Catholic or Irish and care not one bit about Irish history, Gareth who sits beside me is a Welshman who’s only connection to the Catholic Church is that his wife is Catholic. He don’t give a monkeys about Ireland, he’s there for the football.

It is well known in football agent circles throughout Europe, not to offer coloured players to a particular Russian club as they point blank refuse to sign one as their “fans” would not accept it

UEFA are aware of this and yet stand idly by in the face of pure racism

They are a joke organisation whose tenure of European football is coming to an end very soon

  15. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

Censorship is a dangerous road to go down I remember when Maggie the snatcher had a go at Censoring Gerry Adams. That failed utterly miserably as well.

This phoney Scottish war on bigotry is based on jailing folks who sing songs at fitba matches. As if that is the cause and the reasons for bigotry. The war on bigotry should start at the top. Every single law that prohibits a RC from being an equal must be repealed. Surely that’s not unreasonable. Surely one day a RC can be the monarch in UK ?

We should remind ourselves that in this 21st century:

A roman catholic has not yet been a prime minister

Nor can RC even be married to Royalty who are in line to the throne.

Even in the last year, the wee dummy Scottish parliament in holyrood, needed to change their laws so that an ex RC priest could be allowed to be a SMP –

I’m not talking about a hundred years ago, Im not talking about in 1690, but in modern day Scotland today.

Just now the western world is riding high on a wave of anti racism, can you imagine the rightful outcry from all quarters if

We decided that a guy of Asian descent could not be PM

Our that Prince Harry could not marry Girl because she was coloured

Or that a Muslim couldn’t be elected onto the Scottish Parliament

It would be great if UK, or Scotland in particular could enlighten their views on Irish/RC as well as they have on the issue of racism against coloured folks

But it looks very much like the Scottish “dummy” government and the Scottish “look after yerself first” Polis have now decided that the best way to deal with this bigotry is to make an uninterpretable law and then Jail a few bevvied young guys and criminalise them while not defining why their words, (or even which words) are offensive / censored. The fact that they decline to define offensive chants defies any logic, but as we all know their truth is not necessarily the same as ours.

The general public and law experts together have all voiced their opinions against this law but Politicos and Polis have backed themselves into a corner with their ridiculous comments and now they cant find a way out of it without a significant loss of face for them both. So they carry on regardless.

Let last seasons attacks on Neil Lennon be a warning about the elements that are alive in modern day Scotland

He was attacked by the scum ned element of society on the pitch at Tynecastle

The scum ned was not guilty of bigotry

He was also targeted by the “behind doors committees” of the Football and refereeing brotherhoods

He was targeted by the would be anti RC paramilitary in Scotland

He was demonised by the media as a hate figure

And all the time we are repeatedly told on TV radio and redtops that he brought it upon himself.

This is what happens when you allow someone else to define your truth for you.

  16. SKY has just announced that we won’t challenge the fine. Astounded of forehead, to say the very least. This leaves the whole thing unresolved. What are these illicit chants? On the face of it, I think this is utter foolishness on the part of the Board. At the very least, they could have asked for clarification. I can’t see things ending here.

  17. So part one of Phil’s article yesterday seems to be correct in that the club don’t mind accepting the punishment but if they really want to eradicate “illicit chanting” from Celtic Park, they need to let us know exactly what can and can’t be sung. There can be no “catch-all” approach. We need to know for certain so that we can avoid those songs deemed “illicit” so as to stop the club getting into any more trouble. This is the least they can do for us.

I’m sure everybody won’t agree but if the club provide a definitive list of what is not acceptable then, at least there can be no excuse if we do it again.

  18. The next step for the Board is to agree to a deal that will see the newco huns straight into the SPL.

No appeal is the correct call by Celtic .. Well done PL ( I don’t say that much!)

By accepting we retain moral high ground as the offence is due to a small minority.

Challenging the decision would have suurendered moral high ground and looked a lot like denial.

We know we are not perfect but we also know as a support we have much less to fear in respect of this behaviour than the Huns. Accepting this decision creates a big stick that the Huns will feel more severely and more regularly than we ever will. Pity it came to this But I think damage limitation is the best course of action.
