Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

  1. This Board need to leave right now.

All we were crying out for was a spokesman, someone to stand up for us, and stand up for free speech.

    It wasn’t a tall order.

The results of this are terrifying.

More attacks on our supporters from neds, killers and the polis.

And less vocal defiance from our own against such attitudes that lead to these attacks.

    That, my friends, is fascism.

This was the crunch test for our board.

Phil Mac does deserve an apology from the eejits who scorned him in the Celtic Support after lapping up what he delivered on the huns.

    Someone posted UEFA’s rules earlier

I cannot remember them verbatim but my feeling was it would be a hard job arguing that the provocative element did not apply.

Celtic, unlike the support, have to work within the rules and no amount of emotion can change this. So I’m with you, what exactly do UEFA rules forbid and did we do anything to cross them (we must have done something) and if we did what is the counter argument?

The huns never expected to get done by UEFA for TBBs but they eventually did because UEFA have much wider borders and audiences to consider.

Some Celtic stuff has now fallen foul of the wider UEFA remit, sometimes the world works for yourimmediate interests, sometimes against, but in my experience, if you wait long enough, it all works for the best.

  3. I honestly think the board – a bit like Pat Nevin and his hideous ilk – have been seduced by the perception of themselves as super-civilized, enlightened moral arbiters, whose role it is to define and regulate the cultural and political beliefs of the fans.

I suppose this false sense of superiority is the norm when you move in the upper echelons of the political, financial and corporate worlds like Lawwell, Desmond, Reid (and Paul McBride) do.

They’re the elites! And they’re completely out-of-touch with the majority of fans. They will suffer quite a backlash for their betrayal.

I don’t think the link between Celtic and Ireland will ever be diluted. Singing about the IRA does nothing to enhance the links, in fact it even alienates a large number of Irishmen and women who just want to move on and live in peace.

Celtic will always be linked with Ireland and this is unique and will never die.

  6. Compare the incidents and fines, Zenit fine works out 25,000 a game.

There is not a club in the WORLD who would not appeal a fine for shouting the word ‘RA’.

That is what the fine is for, 200 fans shouting ‘RA’. God Help Us once the bill comes in…

FC Zenit St Petersburg has been fined 50,000 euros for incidents involving their fans in two matches in the group stage of Champions League, according to UEFA.

The Russian club has been sanctioned by the lighting of flares, illegal signs, poor organization and the invasion of the field produced in Group G against FC Shakhtar Donetsk on November 1 and against APOEL FC on 23 March.

Furthermore, the Celtic Scot has also been fined, possibly with 15,000 euros for illegal songs in the Europa League game in Group I against Stade Rennes on 3 November in Glasgow

  7. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

I was at the Rennes game with Bjmac and some of his lovely family.

I had taken my 11 year old daughter with me. She has only ever seen us win.

How can I risk taking her again if there is even the remotest chance that I could be arrested for singing a Celtic song?

I was intending to go the the Celtic Store at CP for some Christmas presents for my wee girl and some friends.

    Not now.

And worse than that will be telling the wee one that we are not going back.

    Either of us.

  8. Sky sports reporting that PL will not tolerate the illicit singing … Getting scunnered more and more….Feek….

  9. Article 11 (2e) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations states that disciplinary measures may be taken for the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature.

I will ask again, when will Barcelona be getting fined for their constant display/songs/chants for Catalan politics at the games…

All we need now is an unequivocal statement from the GB that they will never again make any reference to any terrorist organisation in their songs and we can all move on.

The spotlight will then shine exclusively on RFC who will be unable to indulge in their usual defence of “whatabouttery”.

  13. Lawell better nip this in the bud because things will only get worse.

Lawell tell us NOW what the illicit chanting/singing was that we were done for.

    Tell us .

  14. James Forrest – I totally agree. Today’s decision is wrong on many fronts but it is the decision to allow Newhuns into the SPL which will be final straw for me.

If the board allow it there is no point to the competition. I will fell like I have rallied round the wrong cause for many a year.

We must not let them get away with sitting back thinking “Job done” . Thats the reason there is a fighting fund at the moment to take them to task over there attempts to pillory the Celtic support. We as a support are better than this , with our without the backing of the board we will take them to task.

  20. Possible pickups in Port Glasgow and Paisley for anyone looking to get on the FAC bus tomorrow to demonstrate against the Offensive Behaviour at Football Bill at the Scottish Parliament.

Bus will leave from George Square, Glasgow at 11am – no charge but donations welcome.

If you haven’t signed the petition against the Bill please do so immediately, you can do it at

    or

If the Bill is passed then the FAC campaign will monitor and collect evidence about all arrests under the new legislation. This will be necessary in order to present evidence after the review period (the end of 2011-12 season and the whole of 2012-13 season we understand). Anyone who is arrested under this legislation should contact us to register their case and to request support if appropriate.

Very bitter blog today. Celtic fans are morons on one side, Celtic fans are huns on the other. Can no one see this division is exactly what the real enemy wants?

This has been a fit up from the start, coming after Ra chants was a no brainer and one we would always lose (although as usual we haven’t even been told if this is what it was for). My first thought was why a home game? How much Ra singing and chanting even happens at Celtic Park, would have been much easier to catch it at away games no? That in itself should show what a fit up this all is.

So what happens now and don’t kid yourself this is the end of it, this is just the beginning. Tricolour offensive? Fields of Athenry offensive (our mighty blogger kojo seems to think so!), flying Che Guavara flags political? Where does it end?

Mythical line in the sand drawn and reached for me now. I will not ditch the tricolour, I will not stop singing ‘the fields’, ‘let the people sing’ etc will you?

Time to regroup, man up and get ready for the fight thats coming. Stick together and stop being so decisive, removing the Ra chants was the first battle in the war these scumbags want to wage on us. Getting the GB is the next stop, then they come for the rest of us. How further do some of you want to bend over before you fight back? If we have another FAC demo lets have 20,000 there to show them how seriously we are taking this, turn up and dont watch the scum in the pub this time!

Lastly I’m neither a moron or a hun (so no side can claim me) just a simple Celtic fan who can see his fellow supporters under attack!

Aye, that’s fair comment once we establish what the offence was, who sang it, and why it was offensive.

I do not understand are you suggesting that a large number of Irishmen are embarrassed or alienated by IRA songs? Are you referring to The soldiers Song, TBOTB or perhaps songs from a more recent conflict for Irish freedom?

Being Irish i find the thought of any Irish person felling alienated by songs in memory of those who fought for the freedom of their country in any conflict a somewhat bizarre concept. Now the argument about the differences between the so called ‘old’ IRA and its more recent manifestation the PIRA is a debate for another day and another Blog

Horseshit, the spotlight will never shine on them. They will come to Paradise on 28th shame themselves as they always do and hee haw will be done about it.

  26. Utterly spineless response from the club. And I say that as someone who has never agreed with IRA chants at matches; but the fact is we don’t know what we’ve been fined for. For all we know it could be Paddy McCourt’s Fenian Army, which would be ridiculous.

If the club has been made aware of what is “illicit” then they have a duty to disclose that information to their “customers”; not doing so is simply leaving the support vulnerable to more charges, not least with the Orwellian “offensive” behaviour bill being passed into law this week.

Makes me wonder if the board actually wanted this to happen. The reputation of the Celtic support has been forever tarnished by the boards cowardly refusal to even clarify the charge the club has been fined for.
