You remember Celtic manager, Gordon Stachan, third manager in our history to win three-in-a-row? Took us to the Champions League knock out stages for the first time, did much of this while comparative economics were moving against us, remember him? Is he the same Gordon Strachan who has transformed the Scotland national team’s results?
Gordon is unequivocally a successful manager but his Scotland team is performing far better than I thought possible when he took over what looked like a poisoned chalice. The most stunning fact of his record there is that they have not conceded a goal in three successive away games. Gordon’s Celtic covered 15 months, across two championship winning seasons, without keeping a single clean sheet away from home, no matter how lowly or distressed the opponent. Even good, experienced, managers learn, especially from their earlier troubles.
Jock Stein is viewed mostly through the prism of 1967 but during his final season as Celtic manager, 1977-78, the sentiment among many in the support was decidedly downbeat. Rangers (remember them, played in blue, I think?) would win their third title in four seasons, with two trebles thrown in for good measure. Celtic finished fifth in the league, Jock’s judgement was widely called into question.
At the time Leeds United were a top club in England and after Celtic sacked Jock they moved to secure him. Leeds had no doubts as to his abilities. A little over a month later the SFA offered him the Scotland job, which he took and excelled at, twice succeeding in World Cup qualifying campaigns. His talents were without question but stood in sharp contrast to how many in the support viewed him a few years earlier.
I don’t know if Jock was a better manager in 1982 and beyond than he was in 1978 but there’s a decent chance his football education didn’t stop when the trophies dried up at Celtic. Gordon Strachan is, like Jock was until the end, a student of the game. Neil Lennon is too, he is also receiving some of the reviews his illustrious predecessors would recognise. Gordon was an excellent Celtic manager but he’s better now, perhaps as a result of life’s experiences along the way.
It’ll be really interesting to see how Euro qualifiers reflect on the comparative progress of Gordon and Martin O’Neill, who for my money was a better manager than Mourinho when the latter deployed some of the best players in the world against Celtic in Seville, and needed to deploy every underhand trick in the book to come out on top.
I was blown away by the stunning contributions to our Mary’s Meals campaign yesterday. First in was an incredible £200 + £50 gift aid donation, followed by others, large and small, every one appreciated. Ignore those who would tell you society is dead. You can get involved here.
Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches this month.
“Porto were favourites and would go on to prove how good a team they were by winning the Champions League 12 months later. Their players would demonstrate their prowess across the world for the next decade. They had fabulous talent, so much so, that they should have aspired to better than the gamesmanship used during their run to the UEFA Cup and Champions League wins.”

We beat Boavista on the Thursday night and the Fri/Mon were holidays so I didn’t get the chance to ask my boss for the time off until the Tuesday morning.
When she came along that afternoon to tell me that GCC had put a blanket ban on teachers getting unpaid leave to go to Seville I genuinely remember filling up.
I’d always admonished her of any blame, considering it a decision that she had no control over. However, as the years roll on and I hear of more and more teachers who were given the time to go, my resentment at her words grows stronger.
She knew what Celtic meant to me, the sacrifices that I made with time and money to follow the team.
Despite the fact that in hindsight I had a night that I will never forget, alongside my da in the Gallowgate, I’ll never forget her lack of compassion and understanding of my desire to be there.
Ps it was made worse because I think I was the only Tim at Kilmarnock on the following Sunday without a tan :-)

Congratulations to your family.
Reading back on last nights proceedings .
I have nothing but fantastic memories of Seville and our run that year. I wasn’t born when the Lions conquered Europe , was months old when we lost the final in Milan.
I was reared on magical stories of that era and given our performances in Europe never thought I would ever see a Euro final.
For me Seville was a pilgrimege, maybe ( hopefully not ) a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience what my Da and his pals went through. It was almost religious. My stomach is in knots even now thinking of it. The build up, the quest for tickets, the drink, the bizarre stories , the comradeship , how 100k Celtic supporters descended on that ancient town and left the locals with nothing but good memories.
Whilst the cheating of Porto still sticks in my throat, I have to say , maybe wrongly , the result was almost secondary to the whole experience .
Just being there was more important than the result.
We showed the world what we are all about.
Now Motherwell, 2005, that was simply awful!!
Beware the GUMMY BEARS are on the war path :))

Celtic’s State Aid Unearthed
Written by: Chubby Brown
Saturday, 8th March 2014
Vanguard Bears explain the reasons why Glasgow City Council are withholding the Geo Technical report for the Westthorn site, sold at a knock-down price to Celtic F.C.
The reason given for this huge reduction in price is that due to ground ‘abnormals’, houses could not be built on the site, thus seemingly reducing the land’s value significantly.
Over the last few months we have seen the gradual unearthing (no pun intended) of the truth surrounding the sale of the Westthorn site to the Celtic FC. The continued refusal by GCC to hand over the Geo Technical report has enraged many trying to establish the true reasoning for the far-below-value sale of the plot.
Well, as GCC do not want to reveal the report, we have established the facts of the Westthron plot and have published our findings.
There are no underground faults that would destabilise any building work. as can be seen in the graphic below:
There is no hidden soil composition that would prevent building. The bore hole report from the site to a depth of 36m shows nothing that would prevent building homes on the land.
To put this in perspective the site next door where the former Belvidere Hospital was situated is now the site of Belvidere Village, a housing development built by Keir Homes and the soil composition is as good as Westthorn. The Belvidere site that was sold for £15.2M minus £7.1M for the remediation work that was required to rid the site of foundations and lead pipework from the old hospital.
Just to finish it off, the myth of contamination was busted yesterday with a Freedom Of Information disclosure from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to a request by Big Joe Canoe. There was no contamination!
So, now there is irrefutable proof that there was not, and are no abnormal ground conditions nor contamination in place at Westthorn, we hope that along with the footballing authorities, the European Commission look deeply into this matter and commence a full scale, thorough investigation into the unfair and illegal State Aid that has been given to Celtic F.C. causing an unfair sporting advantage at best, and straight-up fraud at worst.

Vanguard Bears Poll On Recent Events

Morning all. Dire today down here. High wind and driving rain.
I hope Biton recovers quickly. As my mate says, “he can become a very important player for us”.
It would seem that van Dijk and Foster won’t be going to Brazil. While I’m sorry for them, I think that is good news for Celtic. Besides the possiblity we might be able to hold on to them a bit longer, they should be fit and ready for the CL qualifiers.

Burghbhoy,
I enjoyed the great years. I was in school when Lisbon occurred. But I was in Milan. Seville was an utterly different experience, although I still felt gutted at the same result. I was living in Holland when we played Feijenoord. I think I was one of the very few Celtic supporters who was aware of their capability. We were hammered on the night, partly because they had one of the best players I have ever seen, Wim van Hanegem. To say he had a better left foot than wee Bertie sums him up.
