Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

The element of projection is admitted. I could believe that Neil may mean every word he says or i could be projecting with that belief too.

I am fully aware and understand that every Celtic football player misses the game itself. Chris Sutton said exactly the same thing on BT channel at the weekend. The current players too would like to have a high profile match in the SPFL which attracts media attention and the notice of managers of richer clubs. All that is wholly understandable.

But…. I was specific in saying that I do not believe they “want them back in their original form” i.e. unpunished and with continuity of history.

If I had to still operate in Scotland, I would have no hesitation in supporting Celtic, in the future, against a team from Ibrox, playing in blue strips, with much the same support as the deid club had. No objection at all.

But a team allowed to claim 140 years of unbroken history?? Naw! If that happens, the game’s deid.

That is my position and the one I expect my Board and manager to support, whether they ever comment in public about it or not.

  12. Hebcelt.

  22. Old Tim yup 2 together Block 203. How did I get them? Black Puddings can open many doors!!!! Hail Hail Hebcelt

  23. 67 HEAVEN,

I cant believe he said that either, I’d rather he said nothing at all than come out with stuff like that. Having said that its possible that there is a ‘silent majority’ of Celtic fans who agree with him, and that’s who he was addressing. If there is I haven’t met any of them, yeah its great to beat them but not worth the price we have to pay in the aftermath in terms of the mayhem that follows when they lose. Personally my own intention is to never see them again.

“So the IPO could have been fraudulant then with the spivs processing illegal refunds.

    Absolutely superb.

And Whyte to present new evidence in May re his claim.

    It’s a never ending nightmare.”

“The PM report(even though CW,CG,AE, and IA didn’t co-operate) is heartening.”

    ——

“I don’t think any of those liabilities will lie at the door of RFC though. Given that no funding of whytes was used to actually get Rangers to where they are just now.”

It really is a schoolboy error to write to HMRC on headed paper which claims the new club you are representing was formed in 1872.

The tax authorities are not noted for their humour and that will be viewed as sticking two big fingers up at HMRC.
