Jozo’s Achilles, McGregor, McGeady, succession for Scott

464

You can be sure Peter Lawwell was not working on contract renewals for Scott Brown, Jozo Simunovic and Callum McGregor last month, as the transfer window reached is climax, but 14 days after it closed, all three have signed new long-term deals.

Scott’s keeps him at the club until he turns 34 in two years. Jozo is contracted to 2021, when he will be 27, while Callum this morning also agreed to stay until 2021, when he will be 28.

Callum is a fascinating case study in player development. After making a substantial impact on the right wing, his form faded, but he has been reborn in central mid. More than anyone else at the club, he has an ability to instantly bring a difficult pass under control. This affords him that valuable commodity: vision.

I’m not going to tell you Callum is as good as the PSG players we saw on Tuesday, but he is the only player we have in the mould of their midfielders. They also fire the ball around with precision and control. Aiden McGeady had this ability in abundance (none of his Celtic contemporaries did). I’d like to have seen the Green Garrincha in a central role.

My sense is that we may have struggled to re-sign Jozo if questions didn’t hang over his knee. His ability is comfortably worth an eight-figure transfer fee and far higher wages than Celtic could afford. The player’s proverbial Achilles heel may bestow long-term stability in Celtic’s defence.

Celtic gambled on signing him two years ago – and let’s not forget the comments pages here were full of angst, as a regional Guardian journalist expressed astonishment that we’d gone for what he viewed as such a limited talent. We are in a place where we need to take a few chances. This one paid off.

I fully expect Scott Brown will sign one more Celtic contract to see him through his mid-30s, when thoughts at the club will turn to succession.

  1. So this guy, he’s ‘only’ 22, comes over from Belfast, presumably on some kind of public transport. So he’s responsible enough to get himself from one part of the UK to another, either across some very deep water or very high up in the air, and arrive in Glasgow in one piece. So far, he’s clearly old enough to be responsible for himself so the ‘he’s only 22’ rubbish doesn’t wash with me.

Then he drinks all day, to the extent he ‘can’t remember parts of the day’.

Then he comes to our football club and shames it, and himself, and all of us.

Presumably he was part of some group. Presumably his mates let him get into the state he was in. Presumably somebody realised he was out of his tree. Some mates! To some degree, they share the blame. They could have helped protect him from himself. In doing so they’d have been protecting Celtic too.

It’s a privilege to be at Celtic Park on a Champions League night but with privileges come responsibilities, with actions come consequences.

Ban him for the length of time it would take the face value of his season ticket to pay off the inevitable fine.

    And cut his balls off.

Back in the day (ok the 1970s) Celtic constructed a barrier in front of the ol North Terracing.

Question is, was that built just to keep KevJungle ‘in’?

  4. The pitch invader is a ticket season holder, that will cease. He has probably witnessed his last game at Celtic Park for a very long time.Too much alcohol and not being in charge of your senses will likely cost him his job

because of one moment of madness.Remember the Strachan incident when the attacker was left without his wife, home and job, then went to England living rough in hostels because of his ‘ moment of madness’.

Another punishment winging it’s way courtesy of a fan who had too much booze in his system and decided to

make a complete fool of himself,or maybe it may well be a blessing in disguise that he stops the drink before it

    stops him.

  5. Without sufficient information, I don`t like to make comments on the `invader` but for those blaming alcohol for his actions , I would ask you to consider how many millions have been in Celtic Park over the last, say, five years; how many have been drunk and how many have run on to the pitch and attempted to hit a player?

Certainly, alcohol is a likely factor but it certainly is not the sole reason.

    JJ

PS I hope the `Sevco also going in to Admin` rumour is true ( though I don`t suspect it is). It would bring a smile to a week where pragmatic realisation has been to the fore.

I haven’t posted in a while. This whole SFA stitch up still riles me. Well done to everyone that are doing the digging.

Having read JJ’s site this morning to find out Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was earning £8500 a week and this did not flag up any concerns among anyone at the SFA especially Sandy Bryson makes the mind boggle. Did he think he was playing for the love of the jersey? Id love to know what the de Boers were on before EBT. I think it’s common knowledge our “big players” were earning around £25k a week at the same time. Anyway, good luck to our online detectives in unearthing the truth.

    =====================

For those interested in revealing the truth, but to save posting something lengthy not of same interest to others have a look at

    https://www.sfm.scot/the-vice-closes/?cid=161206

In short. If the SFA think they can limit the investigation into the UEFA Licence to what took place in 2011 only they have another think coming.

Celtic shareholders (and that must now include the big bhoys who have lost out financially by SFA lack of diligence from 2000 ) simply will not let another whitewash happen.

All correspondence with the SFA and the Compliance Officer from Celtic and Res12 lawyers is a matter of record and the idea the SFA only were aware that something untoward had occurred in 2011 after the CW trial does not bear scrutiny.

They have had enough info from 2014 to act and failed and have insulted Celtic and shareholders in doing so. They would be foolish to try it again.

Tontine how old was bertie in 1957?

Had an early night last night so just saw this. He was 19. I first saw Bertie earlier that year when he played for Dumbarton; he was in the Sons side that lost 2-5 tae Charles Patrick who gave a virtuoso display in the game to mark the turning on of local side’s floodlights.

Also in that side was another loanee Celt Dunky Mackay while former Celt Alec Rollo who was actually born in Dumbarton played for Dumbarton tae.

We had a very good relationship with the Sons at that time, due mainly tae their Chairman Detroit native James Fitzgerald and CEO of local manufacturing side Burroughs; his son appeared in my class for about a week and then disappeared to St Als. I had the privilege of watching that game fae their wee stand. Coronation Cup hero Johnny Bonnar would join them a year later.

  12. See this CL nonsense?

Why after they draw the groups don’t they just form new groups with top two teams in each Group drawn against each other for the next stage of CL and the bottom two teams in each group play for EL qualification?

Now that would be a real competition.

Either that or if PSG win the CL remove the title for breach of FFP.

Only if FPP shows that kind of teeth will it be respected.

    Tontine Tim,

Was there ever a Celtic defence along the lines of: Haffey, McKay and Kennedy, Crerand, Evans and Peacock

*you’ve touched a nerve here, that was our defence up to the 1-1 draw with Hibs in the quarter final, wee Bertie was injured and replaced with goalscorer John Clark for the replay.

It still should have been our defence against the Pars in Jocks first trophy win as a manager. However, interfering Bob decided tae continue with youngster John Clark in Bertie’s position even though he was now fit. And when the President pulled out due to appendicitis he decided tae replace him with another youngster Willie O’Neill meanwhile club captain Bertie is playing for the black north in a friendly the same night. Bertie never played for the club again and was freed at the end of that season.

By the way in our final game that season which we lost 1-3 tae the calvinists our lineup was Haffey, Curran and O’Neil, Kelly, Kurilla and Clark. Nae Bertie not even a farewell match. BTW a newly signed centre from Raith scored the jambos first.

    ===================

That would be the fulfilment of an ultimate objective that began in St Mary’s Calton in early 2010 when a draft Resolution was agreed at the meeting that then became this and was passed to Celtic to give to the SFA.

Six %^&%$ years and counting. :0)

    ———————-

    Dear Peter,

1 We the undersigned welcome the approach Celtic have made to the SFA re disciplinary matters as we believe it reflects the mood of Celtic supporters everywhere and as expressed at the latest Open Meeting of supporter groups.

    2. As a result of evidence accumulated during this football season 2009/10, the Celtic support in all forms, who are major contributors to the financial* well being of the game in Scotland, have lost confidence in the ability of the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to administer professional football in Scotland in manner that reflects their duty of care to all aspects of the game and everyone who takes part in it.

    3. That loss of confidence has increased significantly as a result of the SFA’s response to Celtic from Gordon Smith justifying the status quo on disciplinary matters relating to appeals and the use of the Review Panel, with an interpretation of FIFA rules that appears misleading, self serving and inaccurate.

    4. Those represented at the meeting wanted changes in Disciplinary Procedures that made them more

    • Transparent,

    • Accountable and

    • Independent of the referees.

We believe this feeling permeates throughout the Celtic support and we note that the English FA operate a system with a Regulatory Commission that meets the above criteria without breaking FIFA rules, real or imaginary, and urge and encourage Celtic to pursue the implementation of a system on similar or improved lines in Scotland.

    5. The Celtic support, for the good of the game, are determined that procedures change and are prepared to use our position as major financial contributors to Scottish Football to bring about what are reasonable, fair and just changes. We also ask Celtic to convey our concerns to the appropriate authorities as they see fit viz:

Football Authority in Scotland (The SFA)

    And Europe (UEFA)

Civil authority (on the issue of proper governance of football.)

And ask if the Review of Scottish Football being conducted by Henry McLeish can look into the wider matter of transparency and accountability at the SFA as whole.

    Signed by :

    1/ Celtic Supporters Association

    2/ Celtic Trust

    3/ The Junglebhoys

4/North American Federation of Celtic Supporters Clubs

    * Note: As a club, we are 1 member of the SFA (i.e. 2.5% share of voice), however as supporters with average gates of 55,000+ then we represent approx 33% of the 170,000 CUSTOMERS who pay to watch Scottish Football.

Having 2.5% customer dissatisfaction is a problem,33% is a disaster waiting to happen.

    (How prophetic is that :0).

The original draft had its genesis on CQN.

Celtic passed the resolution to the SFA and Smith resigned soon after and The Review Panel Procedures were changed.)

Full transparency and accountability is taking a tad longer.

  22. I have asked this before.Would it not be possible for some Celtic shareholders to file a suit against the SFA,in a Class Action.

I am sure there are so many charges can be brought against them and proved in a court of law.

This type of Lawsuit would be their biggest nightmare.

Ralston has the physicality of a grown man .

But the defensive naivety of a teenager.

He has massive potential but lacks decision making at present.

Was at St johnstone game and first three challenges he made took him out of position and created chances for opposition. But what was impressive after that was he settled down and really played well cutting out the over exuberant challenges and made good decisions.

He will win most physical battles but will learn that Neymar’s goal was a result of a good player playing on his blind side using pace.

He is in a good coaching environment and will not go anywhere in the next few years.

If our coaches can teach him the subtle nuances of defense and he continues his physical growth we will have a fantastic player on our hands.
