Jozo’s Achilles, McGregor, McGeady, succession for Scott

464

You can be sure Peter Lawwell was not working on contract renewals for Scott Brown, Jozo Simunovic and Callum McGregor last month, as the transfer window reached is climax, but 14 days after it closed, all three have signed new long-term deals.

Scott’s keeps him at the club until he turns 34 in two years. Jozo is contracted to 2021, when he will be 27, while Callum this morning also agreed to stay until 2021, when he will be 28.

Callum is a fascinating case study in player development. After making a substantial impact on the right wing, his form faded, but he has been reborn in central mid. More than anyone else at the club, he has an ability to instantly bring a difficult pass under control. This affords him that valuable commodity: vision.

I’m not going to tell you Callum is as good as the PSG players we saw on Tuesday, but he is the only player we have in the mould of their midfielders. They also fire the ball around with precision and control. Aiden McGeady had this ability in abundance (none of his Celtic contemporaries did). I’d like to have seen the Green Garrincha in a central role.

My sense is that we may have struggled to re-sign Jozo if questions didn’t hang over his knee. His ability is comfortably worth an eight-figure transfer fee and far higher wages than Celtic could afford. The player’s proverbial Achilles heel may bestow long-term stability in Celtic’s defence.

Celtic gambled on signing him two years ago – and let’s not forget the comments pages here were full of angst, as a regional Guardian journalist expressed astonishment that we’d gone for what he viewed as such a limited talent. We are in a place where we need to take a few chances. This one paid off.

I fully expect Scott Brown will sign one more Celtic contract to see him through his mid-30s, when thoughts at the club will turn to succession.

I recall coming home after a 0-4 humphin at hades, Paddy’s last game, on my da finding out I had sneaked up I feared the worst, my uncle, my mother’s brother asked if I was going the morra, Clyde at home, I replied I had nae money (I was just a wee paper bhoy at the time) or I would, he stuck his hand in his pocket and gave me the money tae go. Next day I woke tae a blanket of snow, a day too late.

Newly engaged to MrsCCB that morning she insisted we get back to Beaverbrooks to collect the ring, which was being engraved, in case the shop was shut! Protests about nearly two hours before it shuts fell upon deaf ears! Still the same.. wouldn’t look out the back window to watch football.

Also at the Dunfermline game and remember the huge crowds and leaving a future founder of the Garryowen behind (Saltcoats CS then) but being waved down by him halfway home!! as he had bummed a lift.

  14. Mcgeady zipping the ball about? I seen a little bit of that by my recollection of him was more of frustration. He rarely made the killer pass when it mattered and his shooting outside the box I’d describe as woeful for a pro practicing every day – he just didn’t seem to get his laces through the ball. Great skills, huge potential but I actually think he was lazy with it. Imagine he would be awesome under BR.

Also , strange we signed jozo despite knee concerns – yet , we let the young African target go because of a less risky bone in the foot issue!

  15. It seems parliament do get involved in footie matters – this is concerning the racist allegations against Sampson the womens manager. 2 enquiries have found him not guilty but

Senior FA executives are set to face a parliamentary inquiry over the investigations after Aluko initially raised a “bullying and harassment” grievance against Sampson in response to a cultural review.

wonder if the scottish parliament have the cojones

  16. The US commentator just said if Everton are pinning their hopes on Rooney they may as well pack it in.

While the elite English clubs do well in Europe until they meet fellow European giants i have seen a few of the others take beatings over the years.

I think the hype of EPL is bought into by some foreign teams when they play against the English elite.

Psychology plays a huge part in the game as it did for us against PSG and also Barca last year.

If teams could learn not to believe the hype many results would be different.

It is often the reason why some teams take chances other ‘s would never dare to.

Had a chap at my door earlier in the week offering to provide cavity wall insulation. He suggested that under a Government Scheme, ECO2, his company would provide the insulation free as the work is fully funded by the Big 6 energy suppliers for those who live in a detached house.

Any advice or experience of this?

Big Jimmy on 14th September 2017 12:13 pm

Jimmy you responded to my post this morning when I had said that I thought the guy that punched a ‘boy’ was out of order as the ‘boy’ had his hands held behind his back. I could have used the word guy or bloke. I was not at all concerned what age he was. I said he should quite rightly be punished but people can’t go around punching people and meting out there own brand of justice because they’re pissed off. You seem to have fixated on my use of the term boy, it’s not the age that concerns me, it’s physically assaulting someone who can’t defend themselves. If that’s not the same opinion as you, fair enough.

    …………………………..

Just back on, seen your post.

i have NO fixation with you using the term “Boy”.

I was simply pointing out that at 22 years of age, Society and the Law view you as ADULT/GROWN UP.

As for not defending himself, for all you know the PSG player that he ADMITTED to in Court trying to assault may well be a very timid young guy ( aged 20……not yet a MAN ?), who could have been very scared when this Chump went towards him in a threatening manner ?

So your “Boy” of 22 (who is of a MAN age), decided to have a go at an innocent young boy who plays for an opposition football team, and thats okay in your book ?

Like others, you have FAILED to answer my earlier question about what you would do if this drunken ” Boy” who whos only defence in Court was that he had little memory and all that bullshit…came with intent to assault you and/or members of your family etc ?

With the CHUMP ” Only being a Boy of 22)…would you stop and ask him his age moments before he attempts to assault you ?

If you would stop to ask his age before you Thump the Chump….then thats your choice…me naw !

finally. let me assure you of this , in previous years whilst doing my job, I had “Boys” and MEN of ALL ages coming at me….I didnt even attempt to ask their feckin age before I laid them out…oh and this was the same for me when playing football in my younger days.

Regards the pitch invader how will everyone feel if he gets a “Not Proven” like John Wilson did?
