Jullien and backfill

209

We are not short of choices, but the trophy win from our quadruple treble my mind most falls back on is the League Cup Final win over Newco in 2019, the 10th trophy of the series.  Celtic were without a fit striker to start the game, Lewis Morgan was thrown into the role.

Even though that season produced another treble, this was a game in which demonstrated the decline of the imperious team that had gone 69 matches undefeated earlier in our quadruple run.  Still, Celtic did what Celtic always did then, found what was necessary to win the trophy.

Newco battered us throughout the 90 minutes, plus 8 added at the end, but the game turned on a four-minute spell midway through the second half.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Morgan on 59 minutes and was fouled the first time the ball went near him.  Christopher Jullien met the resulting Ryan Christie free kick to score the only goal of the game.

Three minutes after that, Jeremie Frimpong was red carded and conceded a penalty.  Alfredo Morelos’ effort was saved by Fraser Forster, who put on one of the greatest goalkeeper performances I have ever seen.

Under so much pressure, with our run on the line, Jullien’s goal brought a moment of sheer elation.  For me, no other goal in the entire 12 trophy run matches it.  Just over a year later, Chris was injured.  It was 14 months before we saw him on the field again, by which time a new manager was in place with a new defensive partnership and plan for the future.

He travelled to Germany yesterday for a medical ahead of a planned move to Schalke.  This examination will not go through on the nod, so there are no guarantees the deal will conclude.  At 29, Chris cannot afford to sit on the bench, or stand, and wait for his chance.  If he gets his move, it will be a bittersweet parting.

Those of you who are paying attention will note, the squad headcount is close to being relieved of an occupant in central defence.  Backfill is the more interesting question.

  1. P67 — If he goes then he goes.

We paid too much for him at £7mill.

He is a great player but over emotional.

On his game he was great / off his game he was a liability.

If he hasn’t managed to convince AP then too bad.

Lots of work needed to sort out the first team CB roster and the b team pathway.

Hopefully we can bring in some starting quality.

CJ was not / is not that guy.

Given the reports — big mistake.

The Hydro is really coming into its own.

I have been dragged along twice recently — the wife is the better planner.

Big crowds full of people of a certain vintage on the cheeky watter.

The prices are shocking — £75 for a standing ticket / £6 for a drink.

However there are enough people with the spare cash to make it work.

Now for my plans for the new Main Stand / economics behind it.

  3. !!Bada Bing!! on

Ange would have known from Day 1,that Jullien would have been out the door as soon as practicable ,i think the Japanese boy at Man City might be a real option now.

  4. Losing Chris Jullien will be bittersweet indeed. At this distance in time, his defensive lapses (against Livingston, for example) are thrown into deep shade by that one shining moment at Hampden, that dramatic, beautiful, sweet moment. There are other moments of course, but that one…I’ll never forget it. For me, if he goes, it’ll be thanks for the memories and definitely a sense of what might have been.

  5. 2019 SLCF — the performance that day showed how far and how fast we were falling under NL2.

FF was the only consistent bright spark of that season — EuL surprises and SPL dross.

  6. No other goal matches Big Chris’ during treble run? Not even Tom’s v Aberdeen? 1st treble, injury time winner. Don’t know how many will agree with you, but happy to be corrected.

  7. I still maintain that Forster saved shots we’d expect a keeper to save – a part from the pen.

I don’t buy into the Forster game of his life narrative about that cup final – Morelos shots were all head down and hit hard, he never placed a single one and that’s why he’s still a Rangers player.

  8. Hope like hell I’m wrong, but someone somewhere is extracting the urine big time re Jota.

    Fingers crossed and all that

    not even close.

maybe 5 other goals in the cup winning (and semis) were better and more emotional, most notably toms lightning lit piece of individual magic.

control, swivel, 8 touches, switch of feet, maybe even my favourite all time cup final goal, an INVINCIBLE TREBLE, never seen before or since.

As for having a good summer.

Had to cancel my holiday to Turkey 2 weeks ago.

So not going so great so far.

If we get a few first team additions in, that will cheer me up HH

  11. Got to disagree Paul.

I would have expected most goalkeepers to save what the hun threw at us that day and nothing compares to big Tams goal against Aberdeen

  12. Chris v. Tom v. AN Other?

    ……………..

It’s a shame you decided not to go. Tremendous evening. I was with my 17 year old grandson and we both agreed every song was sensational. One of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. I agree with your comments about the Hydro. I attended the Crowded House gig (listen to me 🤣) a few weeks back and it was great. The prices for drinks are disgraceful. After paying £6+ (including £1 deposit for plastic drinking vessel) at CH, I decided not to bother having a drink last night. It’s a great venue though.

I enjoyed your civilised debate with Martim 40 yesterday and one or two others. Like you I think the club need to act. I like your ideas on the matter. I’m not a financial person though and don’t know how feasible some of them are but I enjoyed the detail from the pair of you. Good views expressed from both sides of the debate.

If you didn’t know Chris Jullien was persona non grata by now you weren’t paying attention.

Hope we get a better replacement player that wants to play for Celtic.

  17. Mad Mitch,

Your posting has been exceptional over the last few days. Your cost analysis has been detailed and precise however I wonder how it will compare to Celtic’s.

One thing is for sure I don’t think our main stand will last another decade without major refurbishment.

I’m one of those bald guys. Both very important goals for us at critical times. I’m siding with those who favour Tom’s goal. It was immediately followed by a deafening thunderclap which frightened the Bajaysus out of me as I was celebrating behind the goal.

  19. I think we should open an art gallery to house all these iconic moments.

SCF @ 2017 — there were clouds inside the stadium during the game.

When TR scored there was a flash of lightening as the ball touched the net.

SLCF @ 2021 — the KF picture with the smoke in the background is another that deserves some sort of posterity.

If — sorry when — we build the new Main Stand we will need to set aside a GOMA sized space to house all the pictures that we have to celebrate. That and sticking another couple of quid onto the cost of the Museum and Tour.

I prefer Tom’s cup winning goal v Aberdeen for sheer excitement and joy. Oh and it won me and my dearly departed brother a lot of money for a correct score bet.

  21. Jullien was immense in both legs against Lazio.

    I’ve posted this before .

My mate shared a lot of drinks with Scott Brown ,in their hotel ,after Scotland drew with England at Wembley.

He asked a very drunk Broony .

    “ What the F…. went wrong ?”

    In relation to the season..

A very drunk Broony responded with a hand gesture ,and “ Big Jullien is a w….r.”

All cup winning goals for Celtic have their own importance.Big Billy 1965 for me was the icing on the cake, not forgetting ten thirty for his contribution. With CJs goal in the league cup final, wave after wave of sevco attack,it was most pleasing to win the game and termed lucky, jammy I could not give 50 donald ducks, the win was secured and Celtic fc held aloft the trophy.Big Tam Rogic’s winner v Aberdeen was indeed sublime, especially if you are among the throngs who witnessed that goal.Others may remember cup winning goals for the Hoops, and maybe a certain winner in Lisbon, may be the one that broke the hearts of a certain portion of the population, and for those of a green and white persuasion,is one that will be ranked top of the pile.

  24. I would hope Starfelt becomes backfill next season Paul and another defender can be brought in to play alongside CCV. I’ve never slated big Carl and he got through a tough season but he reminds me a bit too much of Jiri Jarosik, with a similar fragile, lanquid style. Big Jiri had his great moments for us as well of course but we need people driving on all cylinders if we want to play at a higher level. In his favour Starfelt has pace. In a Celtic TV interview he said he fancied his chances as being the fastest in the side, so as a sweeper that has to be positive. One other criticism levelled against Starfelt is that he is two one-footed, many a CQN matchday analysist on here has referred to this. Not an expert myself…Ange was a central defender in his day, he will know what he wants.

  25. SAINT STIVS, saw that interview a wee while ago. Good for Aiden, didn’t back down and in fact faced down McIntyre regarding the reason he and James McCarthy got the abuse others who had ‘switched’ national allegiance had not. McIntyre as uncomfortable as when facing Ange now.

Great news on your treatment and progress! Keep on keeping on!

A wee story about my own experience. 5 years ago, after a few weeks of feeling generally off, I went for a pish. It is hard to express my feelings of shock and terror when I pished bright red blood. Off to hospital. Urine cytology test shows abnormal cells – diagnosis – kidney cancer Stage 2. Treatment – radical nephrectomy – fancy term for entire removal.

I start getting regular cytology tests. A few months later, the cells are again abnormal. Scans show no tumour in remaining kidney. Surgeon says, “You need a cystoscopy.” I say “What’s that?” He says, “ I need to look inside your bladder to check the walls.”

    “How do you do that?”

    “With a camera.”

    “How do you get in?”

    “How do you think?

    “Nooooooo!”

    “Yes.”

“But it will be totally dark.”

    “We attach a light.”

    “Nooooooo!”

    “Yes.”

“Why don’t you attach a mic, and we can do a YouTube video?”

“Now you are just being silly.”

So I go through this humiliating and painful procedure of having a camera thrust up my dick looking for bladder cancer. Result negative.

I get a cytology test every 3 months, then every 6 months. Cells normal.

2 months ago, my test shows cells neither normal or abnormal, but ‘atypical’. Surgeon says, “Come back in a month, we will redo the test, and if atypical or abnormal, we will do another cystoscopy.”

So I show up at the hospital a month later, not knowing what I was in for, and simply dreading it. A young attractive nurse from Jamaica takes my weight, blood pressure and pish sample.

She says, “I see you are scheduled for a possible cystoscopy.”

I said, “Will you be doing it?”

She giggles, “Oh Nooooooo, that will be for the intern.”

I say, “ Is it a man or a woman?

    She says, “Man.”

“Well, I hope he’s not gay.”

    Cue, lot of laughs.

So the intern comes in, while we wait for the test result. Young medical graduate in his first year in the hospital. He asks me the usual questions, “Any blood in your urine?” Etc.

I tell him I am not looking forward to a cystoscopy.

He says, “ YOU’RE not looking forward to it!!! How do you think I feel?”

Surgeon returns. Results normal. I say, “I don’t know who is more relieved, me or him.” Cue a few more laughs.

End of story, I walk out floating on air.
