Jullien and backfill

209

We are not short of choices, but the trophy win from our quadruple treble my mind most falls back on is the League Cup Final win over Newco in 2019, the 10th trophy of the series.  Celtic were without a fit striker to start the game, Lewis Morgan was thrown into the role.

Even though that season produced another treble, this was a game in which demonstrated the decline of the imperious team that had gone 69 matches undefeated earlier in our quadruple run.  Still, Celtic did what Celtic always did then, found what was necessary to win the trophy.

Newco battered us throughout the 90 minutes, plus 8 added at the end, but the game turned on a four-minute spell midway through the second half.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Morgan on 59 minutes and was fouled the first time the ball went near him.  Christopher Jullien met the resulting Ryan Christie free kick to score the only goal of the game.

Three minutes after that, Jeremie Frimpong was red carded and conceded a penalty.  Alfredo Morelos’ effort was saved by Fraser Forster, who put on one of the greatest goalkeeper performances I have ever seen.

Under so much pressure, with our run on the line, Jullien’s goal brought a moment of sheer elation.  For me, no other goal in the entire 12 trophy run matches it.  Just over a year later, Chris was injured.  It was 14 months before we saw him on the field again, by which time a new manager was in place with a new defensive partnership and plan for the future.

He travelled to Germany yesterday for a medical ahead of a planned move to Schalke.  This examination will not go through on the nod, so there are no guarantees the deal will conclude.  At 29, Chris cannot afford to sit on the bench, or stand, and wait for his chance.  If he gets his move, it will be a bittersweet parting.

Those of you who are paying attention will note, the squad headcount is close to being relieved of an occupant in central defence.  Backfill is the more interesting question.

Malick Thiaw could go in the opposite direction to Christopher Jullien if a report in Italy is right.

Seems we have triggered Jullien 1 year extension before he went to Shalke, makes sense

I’d imagine AP will do what he does best and play his signings. Starfelt reported for training with CCV and will start where we left off as champions.

The Swede was immense in the run in, after a shaky start and also regained his international shirt, any CB signing will challenge probably before Stephen Welsh giving as the back fill mentioned. Itakura ( Man City) was lined up to go to Schalke but the deal fell through so there may be a deal to come for us with either him or Malik Thiaw coming in the opposite direction to Jullien.

One of the first things the medics did was to get some tissue from my prostate for a biopsy. Little did I know that this would mean a rear entry with what looked like a large pepper pot with microscopic light, camera, scissors and a collection bowl ! Was quite an experience for this 69 year old.

  5. Christopher Jullien is our second most expensive accusition. Many of us posted repeatedly about his progress and status. It was a relevant question.

The rumours, the signals were overpowering. The dogs in the street were more pragmatic than some on CQN.

Surprised its taken so long for a ‘ Celtic snubbed ‘ by Jota story to emerge

Some years ago, I went for a colonoscopy and was embarrassed ay the prospect of a stranger poking something up my exposed bum. I consoled myself with the mental reassurance that these guys do this every day so I should be completely relaxed. That soon changed as I walked into the treatment room to be greeted by the person who was about to perform the task with a friendly, `Hello, Sir.` ….. one of my ex-pupils !!!

A small but select bunch of drunks meeting tomorrow at the Horseshoe Bar, Glasgow 1pm. All welcome, no exceptions. Then onwards to wherever will let us in.

Sensible business option to trigger the one year extension on Jullien’s contract, protecting our investment and potentially receiving some of our money back with the option to buy.

Much better than giving a £7M buy away on loan whiles he runs down his final year.

I knew a guy who swallowed his glass eye. The doctor told him to wait till it passed. It didn’t. So back to the quack for an investigation.

Doctor told him to drop his kegs and bend over the desk. He then inserted a small torch into his rectum and looked around. After a few minutes the guy said, “Can you see anything?”

“I can’t see a thing,” said the doc.

“That’s funny,” said the man. “I can see YOU.”

  12. I think it was JJ that said earlier that he never felt comfortable when CJ was playing and the total opposite when CCV was, I agree with him 100%, don’t know what is was with CJ, just didn’t suit the Celtic jersey IMO, I know he is a gifted player et all, but some folks are not meant for Celtic.

    ……………………………..

As for Maxwell, I will wager both my bollix that she will be free within a year, two at the most, she will get back to the UK then walk, mark my words, friends in high places and keeping the trap shut will pay dividends for her.

What evidence do you have that Chris Jullien thinks he’s better than he really is? Because he was on a plane, presumably on his way to another club? If he is leaving, it is presumably with Celtic’s agreement and probably even encouragement and collusion.

Chris sustained a very serious injury playing for Celtic. I think he might be deserving of a little more respect instead of being traduced by a Celtic supporter who knows absolutely nothing about him or his situation.

    —-

Tom with all due respect how do you know I know nothing about him?

You presume that my assumption or fact is based on CJ being on a plane it is not, it was the catalyst for me to post about the situation.

I also said I thought he had something about him, in other words I always thought there was a good player there.

You come across as quite an argumentative chap and a know all, when all you do is pull people up for their opinions.

Anyway I hope you will see that I only want players that want to be part of a team effort and I know CJ did not..fact.

As for supporting him through his bad injury I do not think you or any other Celtic supporter can deny as a club and support that we did.

My comment referred to your statement that he thinks he’s a better player than he is. I asked if you had any evidence of that. If you do have evidence of that, then fair enough. That’s what I asked.

As for me being argumentative, it’s a blog. If someone posts a personal criticism of a Celtic player, is it not reasonable to expect someone to ask how you know that?

If that’s to be classed as argumentative, then you’re in the wrong blog.

I meant no disrespect to you. I simply suggested that the player himself deserved some respect.

I see the Israeli U-19 have reached the European Final, where they will play Engerlund. Hugely impressive from the young Israelis, and I’m sure many scouts will be taking in this game.

  18. Anybody likely to be better than Compper, but this lad Malick looks really exciting.

He is 20, 6ft 3, can play centre half, right back or defensive midfield, hope we get him.

    HOT SMOKED

That was funny! Yes, better to have anonymity I believe.

A few years ago, I had a colonoscopy in an attempt to identify stubborn gastric pain. As I lay in the gurney in my short ‘goonie’ waiting to be wheeled in, the gastroenterologist introduced himself. I asked him if he could write a short note to my wife. He looked surprised and said, “ This is a routine procedure, it is not life threatening.” I said, “ But can you write it anyway?”

Sighing, he said, “What do you want the note to say?”

“ Can you just confirm for her that in fact my head is not actually up there?”

  21. I was never a fan of big CJ nor of Bobo- both were cult players rather than good players. I prefer the less spectacular or freakish Denayer, Simunovic or even Benkovic.

I am happy with CCV + 2 others rotating. Starfelt will be just as awkward and, to be fair to him, just as dogged and battling, whether he plays right or left CB. I worried that he was behind the unimpressive Helander in Sweden’s pecking order and I think we overpaid for both Starfelt and Big Julie. I know CCV will cost us a lot but his abilities are closer to his price tag than are CS and CJ. We can get better for less. An untried 20 year old from Schalke is a punt (as are all transfers) but we need CB cover still. I reckon Bosun Lawal will want to see a chance to challenge Steven Welsh as a back up option and I expect to see him in the upcoming 6 friendlies
